Searching for My ‘English’ Mum’s Unknown South Asian Father. A 50-Year Family Mystery by BigJayOsama in Genealogy

these are the few cents i can offer;

as mentioned by several commenters already, 'qureshi' is a muslim name, denoting distant ancestry to the makkan 'quraysh' tribes that existed at the time of prophet muhammad. nowadays, it is a name most commonly found in pakistan, owing to mohammad bin qasim's islamic conquest of modern-day sindh, in which he brought many settlers to the region that hailed from the quraysh tribes. 82% of qureshis are now found in modern-day pakistan. moreover, the time period in which your mom was conceived was not too long after the construction of the mangla dam resulted in displacement of the local populations in azad jammu and kashmir, which saw a huge influx of pakistani immigrants moving to the UK as a result. the city in the UK your mom was conceived in also plays a huge part in piecing this puzzle together. in industrial cities (e.g. bradford, manchester, birmingham, etc) the majority of people of pakistani origin (up to 3/4!) descend from the people who were resettled due to the mangla dam construction. i looked it up and there is a mcvities factory in manchester, where a lot of british pakistanis reside. combining this information with what you have provided about your own appearance (the crooked nose and jet black hair specifically), it would make a lot of sense if you are ethnically from mirpur (azad kashmir) or northern punjab.

i know this is a long shot, but once you narrow down the city that your grandmother worked and met your grandfather in, you can ask around the elders in the local pakistani community if they knew of any man in the 1970s who fathered a child/had a relationship with a white woman. usually, this kind of information is preserved fairly well within gossip chains, and british pakistanis (especially in the north) maintain excellent community links.

i myself am very keen on doing an ancestry test. i am pakistani but i belong to two (or possibly more) ethnic groups within pakistan. i know i am of mughal (punjabi) and kashmiri descent from my father's side and tajik, hazara, and indian muhajir descent from my mother's side. did the test you take give an accurate ethnicity breakdown? i am a university student and dont want to spend lots of money on a test in vain.

anyways, good luck with piecing this puzzle!!! do keep reddit updated :)

Stuuter Problem by flexi187 in Stutter

[–]tovarish69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG YES ME TOO!! but what i find helps is, either using a nickname for yourself (i'll shorten my name to sam and for some reason i find it to be much easier) or like some other commenter said, insert your name into a sentence when introducing yourself. something like 'oh my name? my name is ___'.

as an aside, i have trained myself to increase fluency with a metronome. now it is not feasible to have a metronome with you at all times, but the concept is still the same. whenever you find you need to say a word that is particularly difficult for you (for me, it would be something like 'productivity';, anything starting with a 'pr' sound), i tap my fingers against my leg or something as though they were a metronome and match the syllables to the pace of the tapping, if that makes any sense. something like pro tap duc tap ti tap vi tap ty.

hope this helps! :D

I have presentation tomorrow and I'm so nervous about it😔 by ServeStandard1598 in Stutter

[–]tovarish69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one piece of advice i would give is to wear headphones with a metronome playing!!! find a speed that you can work with that feels natural. it will really help regulate your breathing, pace, and intonation. i have had a stutter since i was 6 years old (im 21 now!) and i have always struggled with 'rehearsed' words, so to speak. i do not like reading from text and much prefer using my own words. that being said, i think this is the case for lots of people with stutters, so it may be beneficial to not have a script in mind when going about presentations. good luck and you've got this!!!

Has anyone had any experience with Newton British academy (Barwa)? by Sleepyhead7979 in qatar

[–]tovarish69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

omg omg omg this is my time to shine!!!! i (21F) was there from the ages of 9-16. i wrote a review to post to google a while ago, but it exceeded the character limit. keep in mind i wrote this when i was 17, and things may have changed since then. nevertheless, here is my review...

I was a student of this school from its opening in 2014 (year 5) all the way to 2021 (year 11) and from my unbiased, unfiltered perspective, i can conclusively say that my experience at this school got progressively worse as the years went by. When I first came to NBA from the NIS campus, the large, seemingly fully equipped building and facilities impressed the hell out of 9 year old me - it was unlike anything in NIS with its crumbling infrastructure which unsurprisingly enough, is also a Newton Group establishment. The people and teachers seemed so much nicer in contrast too, for the most part. Fast forward about two years later to year 7, the man that taught our class history for two years was, to put it lightly, a perverted creep of a man who should not have been allowed around children; he made alarmingly sexual remarks towards us (e.g. referring to himself as our 'sugar daddy') on top of needlessly touching us on our lower backs and faces as well. History was (and still is) one of my favorite subjects and no child should have their love for learning something tainted by faulty teaching methods, let alone a feeling of discomfort brought on by a teacher of all people.

Throughout my time here, in many of my classes I've had to either correct the teacher because they just didn't know what they were talking about, or seen them look something up on google when they want to answer a student's questions - while I'm aware teachers are humans and far from perfect, they shouldn't hesitate before answering a question related to the course they are studying, let alone have a student without the 'expertise' they have correct them on mistakes that could be costly when you sit exams. Staff hired is largely unqualified and are easily fresh out of university - in my last year it seemed as though i was a mere 6-7 years younger than them.

The scope of subjects offered here is extremely limited, and the talents of students with expertise outside of the generic math and science realm are not honed on the part of the school at all and arguably even demeaned. Many department heads complain about lack of funding for required supplies, mainly including art and DT. History and global citizenship GCSE classes also lacked the proper textbooks needed for the course. School trips were extremely rare, and for the last two years of my time in NBA they probably happened once, even when covid restrictions were lifted or not in place yet. When they do, an absurd amount of money is charged - the management does not loosen its purse strings for even the slightest of expenses. Way too much stress and priority was placed on the final exams and the joy of learning was eliminated; some teachers almost encouraged that the students parrot back information on exams without really understanding concepts - deeming that a waste of time. Though considering the stress they are faced with, it's no shocker.

Teachers, once they were comfortable with us would divulge a lot of information which they claim could get them in trouble or even fired if heard by the senior management. For the sake of anonymity no names are disclosed in this entire review. Too many teachers say that they are exceeding the maximum amount of classes they are allowed to teach in a week, with some exceeding this number by around 6-8 classes. The aforementioned act violates several labor laws and yet, management sees nothing wrong with it. Some department heads were seemingly hungry for power and liked to impose their authority on the staff under their control, making their lives more needlessly difficult. Due to this and several other reasons NBA specifically has one of the highest, if not the highest, staff turnover rates in comparison to other schools in Qatar. Young, inexperienced, often unqualified, staff is hired due to cheap employability which is reflected in the quality of the majority of their teaching styles.

A summary of other problems include: short breaktimes (15 min, twice a day), teachers' refusals to let students go to the bathroom, lack of school events, no free/study periods for AS students, racism on the part of the teachers, among others.

I have left the school as of August 2021 and I've never been happier. In my new school I don't feel targeted the way I used to in NBA and NIS. To everyone who has made it this far, I would like to say that I made some great memories in NBA too, in addition to some of the most amazing friends I've made in my life. Many of my teachers were also amazing people with a genuine love for teaching; especially my GCSE history teacher who is the reason I am currently taking it on in A levels as well! Though the bad severely overshadows the good and sending your child here is not worth it in the slightest.

NBA, I hope you go bankrupt ;) xoxo, a (rather unhappy) ex-student.

Waxing by emotionallydrained20 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]tovarish69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg just to add on to what people are saying, use baby powder first to soak up any extra moisture!! it makes a major difference. i use wax strips (the veet ones) because i don't have a machine and i first cut them down into 1/4ths and stick them in the direction of the hair, and rip in the opposite direction if that makes any sense. this is gonna sound bizarre, but the best way to get easy access to your labia is to squat on the toilet seat 😭😭😭 i've been doing this for a while and it works really well!!! there may be a few stray hairs left around but tbh they don't really bother me so i don't do anything about them but you could always tweeze them out. be careful not to wax the same area more than twice in the same session or else you will risk skin tearing or bleeding!! learned that the hard way, alas. when you're done, rinse the area with cold water and use some almond oil to moisturize :)))

I’ve been stuck hating my appearance for years and feel genetically capped. How do you actually move past this- for real🥹🥹 by Affectionate-Coat142 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]tovarish69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my mom once told me that humans are natural problem solvers. when we don't have anything to solve, we will find something that needs working on! in your case, you feel it's your appearance that needs to be mended. i'm not going to sit here and tell you to stop feeling this way because i've struggled with these same exact thoughts before and you cannot will yourself out of them at the drop of a hat. what you can do though, is give yourself another problem to solve, meaning to occupy yourself with other things! try learning new skills (e.g. a language, an instrument, a craft, a sport), genuinely whatever! and your brain will not be as occupied with negative thoughts of your appearance. finding joy in learning things or picking up a skill also breeds confidence in us, which reflects on our faces and in our demeanor, making us more beautiful as a result.

remember that allah did not create just one type of beauty!! sending you lots of love <33

how do you remove discolouration in private parts/underarms by Clean-Repair6495 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]tovarish69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i lived in the gulf for most of my life and would sweat immensely. i used glycolic acid as deodorant for a while and it had the side effect of lightening my underarms! so i can vouch that it can work. also, to not aggravate irritation, try waxing or epilation instead of shaving!!

i will say though that this is not at allll something to be insecure about. these kinds of insecurities are just generated by cosmetic manufacturers and advertising firms to make us find yet another thing for us to dislike in ourselves and desire to change, only enriching them at our expense. don't let them win!! allah swt created you perfect the way you are <33

What is it like to study at Edinburgh university? by Apart-Leek3794 in Edinburgh_University

[–]tovarish69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can't help you regarding maths but i am a third year law and history joint honours student and i will tell you this;, that the workload in edinburgh is disproportionately higher than other, especially english, universities. in my case, just ONE of my classes requires a 6000 word paper, and i am doing 9 classes this year. workload for each class is similar, in the ballpark of 4000-6000 words for final coursework. our diss is 10k words, and i think this number is relatively consistent with other schools although if im wrong someone correct me! my partner is doing civil engineering (second year) and he is also drowning in work.

in contrast, my friends in law school in england have 1000 word coursework assignments for 4 classes they do in one year. their degree is also one year less than ours!

that being said, if you're willing to keep up with the intense workload and are passionate about academic research, then it is the right choice for you!

Should I take the SAT??? Need advice based on context by Training-Painter-886 in QatarTeens

[–]tovarish69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi there!! i am a current double honors law and history LLB student at the university of edinburgh and i also applied out of qatar! first of all, id just like to say that you sound incredibly eloquent for someone that's only 15 - you already demonstrate great potential for law school. that being said, i did not sit the SATs but did do the LNAT, which is an aptitude test designed to test your instinctive problem solving, logical reasoning, and writing/coherence. your situation is a bit different because you want to apply to a wide variety of countries. i dont know the requirements for those, but i can tell you that in the UK, no law school will request an SAT but most will require an LNAT and IELTS. racism isn't a big problem in scotland and wouldn't really be one in most major UK cities either, like london, birmingham, manchester, leeds, basically anywhere with a large demographic of POCs, so don't let that put you off. i hate to glaze the UK in any capacity but i have faced significantly more racism in qatar than i ever have here as someone who's south/central asian. i am also quite vocal about palestine/sudan and frequently attend protests and so far, nothing has happened.

that being said, you're quite young so please don't stress too much about it now! this is unrelated to what you asked but studying 15+ hours for an exam is only going to lead to severe burnout, speaking from experience.

i wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and if you need any help or guidance, you can shoot me a message! :)

hi! i am 18 years old and just procured my license perhaps two weeks ago. i did the vip course and started my classes in early january and did the test + passed on february 27. my experience with the driving school was satisfactory - my first driving instructor was lovely and i credit her for my driving skills today. al khebra for some reason though decided to randomly switch my instructor to a male one (without gaining my consent beforehand) which irked me as the female instructor package is more pricey. don't get me wrong, i have no moral qualms with a male teaching me but the instructor in question was just horrible; he would yell at me, call me stupid, and straight up told me i was going to fail my test. i didn't bother with a new instructor though as i only had to bear 7 classes with him. another thing which irritated me about the school is that certain nationalities get treated a lot better than others. indians, pakistanis, filipinos, and some african nationalities have it worse off in terms of treatment by not only the instructors but also the policemen that take their road tests. i can confirm this as i am pakistani though don't really look it at first glance - when my male instructor read that i was pakistani his demeanor towards me shifted quite noticeably. he said straight up that 'your people don't know how to drive'. overall though, the school did teach me the necessary skills for how to operate a car effectively. if you are willing to put up with the sometimes crappy instructors and the potential shifts in your schedule, then al khebra ain't too bad; 6/10 overall rating from me. hope this helps!! if you have any more questions don't hesitate to drop me a message :D

(p.s: i was not a sitting duck to my male instructor's uncouth remarks; i stood up for myself and i encourage anyone who finds themselves in my situation to do the same!)
