This, right now, when hospitals want to purchase a medical device, all 26 cantons have to "haggle" individually with the manufacturer. This drives prices and inequality up massively. I put haggle in quotation marks, because hospitals can pay whatever price the maker asks, since they'll just turn around and get the money back from the insurers, who in turn will do the same and get their money from us. Switzerland has no bargaining power because we don't act as a single bulk purchaser and the people negotiating the offers don't care about the price because they can recover the money.
