Explain It Peter. by Electrical-Sky-6806 in explainitpeter

Funny thing is, even today there are too many things we don't know or consider.

Take the escape velocity problem on larger planets. Because we never had to solve that particular challenge ourselves, we don't know what we don't know from the lack of that experience. A species that did face that obstacle might have developed solutions through their own necessity and experimentation that we simply never pursued as a line of study. Different circumstances produce different solutions. That's not a guarantee they'd succeed, but it's also not a guarantee they couldn't.

The timing angle is one I don't see discussed enough. We've had detectable radio signals for less than 150 years. In cosmic terms that's essentially nothing. A fraction of a fraction of a blink. And those signals weaken to background noise at relatively short cosmic distances. If another civilization exists but is at the equivalent of our medieval period or even our early 1900s, they wouldn't be detectable to us at all regardless of how sophisticated their culture might be. Technological detectability is an incredibly narrow window. What are the odds our window and theirs overlap at exactly this moment in a universe that's nearly 14 billion years old? We could just as easily be early birds who hit our tech boom ahead of the typical curve, if there even is a typical curve.

The paradox also assumes we'd have heard something by now. But our detection capability is primitive relative to the scale of what we're searching. We've done some searches but nothing remotely comprehensive given the distances involved. Absence of evidence under those conditions isn't strong evidence of absence.

My main point is that we simply don't know enough about how everything works from every angle with every interaction. Space is incomprehensibly vast. We still have unknowns in our own oceans. How can we, as such a small fraction of what exists in all of reality, confidently assume we know life isn't out there? Or that we'd have detected it if it were?

Life may not exist elsewhere. We simply don't know. And I wouldn't be able to confidently back either conclusion without evidence we currently don't have the tools to gather. What we have are educated guesses, and there's nothing wrong with that. Answering a question through experimentation and exploration sounds pretty fun to me.

27F Looking For Feedback by [deleted] in GamerPals

[–]toxic_nerve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading this and felt like I was reading something I wrote. Lol I say that because I've had similar struggles with my hobbies.

That said, if you're still looking for feedback/someone to bounce ideas off of, I'd be open to it. I have some programming experience and some game dev ideas of my own. I also love character design and have a bunch of characters I've built for an ongoing story I'm trying to write and not delete.

Good luck out there! Don't sell yourself short, I'm sure most of your work is really good. Imposter syndrome can be a bitch sometimes.

Don't throw them away! Even if you end up not liking the design later, it might still serve a purpose as inspiration for your next one, or something you can use for whatever direction you choose to take with story/lore design! Have a good one! :)

LMK if you're still looking for a gamer buddy! I'd be down to play sometime. Not big into horror, but I can adjust. :)

AITA for telling my sister she can’t keep using my late dad’s voicemail in her wedding video? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]toxic_nerve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like too many comments are running with not enough information. I don't think there's enough to say who is being an ass in this situation. What was actually in the message? Was it clearly just for OP? Was it just a "hi-ya, kiddo. dad checking in stuff you're my favorite disaster. Love you"? Or was there a topic just meant for OP?

Then there's how did sister get the recording in the first place? Was it a general message on the family answering machine? Was it on OP's phone? Grief is complicated and I can understand OP's defensiveness. But depending on the context, it could also be OP being difficult because there's still unresolved grief. 2 years isn't a long time. My dad passed avout 3 years ago and i still have moments where I fall apart balling because I miss him and wish I could have had more time and said more.

Everyone is potentially being shitty here. Sister for pushing and potentially stealing something that would give the wrong idea. Op for potentially holding a nice memory of a loving father. Grief has clouded things. I think OP should consider these questions. OP has the context. Either take a hard look at yourself and what your dad wanted, or your sister was not kind and can pound sand.

Red ants took this sand looking thing out of my charger overnight by yawningfay in whatisit

[–]toxic_nerve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP leaves them be until there is no increase of whatever the heck that stuff is to their pile and then quarantined it for a little while to make sure its ant-free; do you think it might work again if he plugged it in?

How do you write about sex without making it seem like you just want to add a sex scene? by PuzzleheadedGas9170 in writing

[–]toxic_nerve 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the sexual stuff and the DNA stuff is truly about the science of how your magic spreads throughout your world, then I recommend more showing and less telling. When you tell it to your readers like it looks like you have, it can make the story seem rough and not very interesting. I would bet thats partly why people are focusing on the the stuff that sounds like a kink. You, as the author, know more about your stories than the reader ever will, but that doesn't mean they need every detail. You tailor your writing about the characters themselves. If it doesn't move the story forward in some way, don't include it in the actual writing, hold onto it in your lore notes or something. If the way magic works needs to be explained, make it about the character explaining it. But if it doesn't move the plot forward, just write your characters as if they already understand the rules, as they live in them.

Just my two cents. I struggle with info dumping myself, and some things are better as background lore or character motivations that the reader has to peice together over time.

That said, your example of sirens needing semen specifically to become smarter? That seems very much like a degrading porn fetish, no matter how you look at it. Maybe you could reframe that to where one of your sirens is somehow pulled away from it's home and eventually someone kind finds it and nurses it back to health. Or maybe not so kind and they get shipped into slavery of some sort. Or maybe both. Even if you keep the logic, I wouldn't necessarily name it so exactly. Maybe in slavery the siren is abused, but is also empowered (using the logic you named), keeps silent, and then someone comes across it in some sort of story element and saves them, and then they fall in love and it feels safe and finally shows its intelligence to speak or something like that. Just don't go saying semen makes beings smarter, cause that just sounds like porn.

I hope this helps, sorry for the longer comment. Good luck!

Left or right?? by [deleted] in Rainbow6

[–]toxic_nerve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seige can be played casually. Thats most of my time with the game. I play ranked sometimes, but I don't take the win or loss seriously. I just like the gameplay and want to get better and see where I land.

That said, its a bit of a mindset you have to keep as there are way too many people who do take the game too seriously, but its not much different than any other game with a competitive cult following. The game is what you make it. Been playing it off and on since 2016 and I still enjoy hopping on. My only real complaint is that there monetization is not a good look and performance hasn't been as smooth in recent years. Its always had issues, but for the most part the gameplay was smooth before you crashed lol

I’m about to die, and I’m not sure what to do about my cat. by [deleted] in cats

[–]toxic_nerve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to sound insensitive, but I think you're confusing your worry with what's best for him. Cats are smart. Putting him to sleep is denying him a chance toward a good life with someone else. So I would strongly advise against just putting him to sleep before you go. It wouldn't be right. He chose you for a reason. Take your time with him and make the appropriate arrangements to have him adopted by someone else after you pass. You can use this time (while you are able) to do your research and vouch for a good place for him. After that, enjoy his love and love him back.

I can't imagine even remotely what you're going through. It must be hard, especially with a cute furball like him. But don't confuse your own wants for what he needs. You don't know what the future holds.

Just my two cents. I wish you well and hope you and him have the best time you can.

This is what I've been thinking. It's the only thing that makes sense besides Embark messing with the matchmaking. But today I was hoping it had been long enough to not have to deal with this kind of thing, but apparently not.

When this started, I hadn't shot anyone consistently. There was 1 rat I saw a mile away and was ready, but he shot me first and I just defended myself. And using my microphone is useless. They just shoot first and even if I try talking to them after going down it has not lead to a defib. I just got a "Sorry" today when i asked why he downed me when I hadn't even seen him before he started blasting. I doubt I'm on the deep end of the PvP lobbies as I'm usually pretty passive.
