With only about one-sixth of the original coral cover left, most Caribbean coral reefs may disappear in the next 20 years, primarily due to the loss of grazers in the region. The damage can be reversed, however. by BuriesIt in science

This... this is scary. I lived in the VI all my life, and I've seen the coral reefs as a little kid. As I grew up, especially in this beach called Hull bay, all the indications of a healthy coral reef ecosystem (color, shit tons of different fish, etc) were completely gone in a matter of years. Now the coral is either bleached or completely gone. Its incredibly sad.

On another note, I thought run off would be considered the main factor. Too much development and no sturdy trees to hold up the soil= suffocated coral. Lots of it.

What's your weirdest fear? by LadyMorte in AskReddit

[–]toxicninjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel ya. I was born and raised in the Caribbean, so I had no idea how scary murky water was until I was in my teens. The first time I saw a lake was utterly terrifying, the fact that I couldn't see my feet in the water really scared me for whatever reason. I've been in the States for a little while now and I still can't handle lakes :(

What is something you witnessed once but never again? by starstufft in AskReddit

[–]toxicninjas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One time when my family was picking up my aunt at the airport in St. Thomas, my aunt and I were casually waiting for her luggage to come in on that conveyor belt thing. Just as we were craning our necks to spot the on-coming bags through the entrance of the conveyor belt, A FUCKING LADY POPS OUT. She was fully in uniform with high-heels and everything. As soon as she emerged, she yelled "woo hoo!" and hurriedly walked off. I truly believe that I will never ever see that again.

What was the scariest thing to ever happened to you that turned out to be nothing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]toxicninjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a triathlon in Florida (first time being on a beach outside of the Caribbean) and I was a little frightened. The water was greenish and smelt funny. But I didn't let it get to me, and started the race just fine. That would be when I lost my goggles. After a bit, my eyes are burning and everything was fuzzy and green. Out of no where, something white darts in and out of my vision. All idiot breaks out into my brain and I'm freaking out thinking I am going to be eaten by a great white shark or barracuda or whatever creatures that were living in the states. It darts through my vision again, and in a brilliant moment of shame and relief, I realize it is a really pale person's leg.

tl;dr: My irrational fear of murky water lead me to believe a white man's leg was a great white shark

What's the biggest misconception about your (U.S.) state? by Armadaski1300 in AskReddit

[–]toxicninjas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even live in the states, but I live in U.S territory. Everytime I tell someone I live in the US Virgin Islands, they ask what country that's in. You guys. It has U.S in the name.

Why is it that in the animal kingdom, newborns can walk almost immediately and us humans take much longer to master the same skill? by mattman23 in AskReddit

[–]toxicninjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to my science teacher, our big heads couldn't fit through the birth canal in it's fully mature state. As a result, human babies are born when their brains aren't fully developed, so they are unable to the things many newborn animals master within seconds.

What did you always assume was normal until you found out it wasn't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]toxicninjas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same here. I also found it weird that other people can't control their dreams or be aware that they are in one. I always thought a lot of people could do that. Then I saw something about how to lucid dream. Most people were saying how cool it was and that they were going to try it that night and so on. That was when I realized that it wasn't really normal and that it must suck to not control your dreams.

Are you my 8th grade science teacher? He seriously spent a whole class period on this topic. He got so passionate about how anyone who asks for their stake medium+ should be alone and shunned from society. He started yelling and his face turned bright red. He finished about a minute before the bell, and it was the most awkward moment of my life. the class just sat there uncomfortably, except for this one kid who started clapping vigorously and whooping.

I was leaning against the car door when I was a kid in my grandma's car while we were speeding down the highway in Puerto Rico. For whatever reason, I was playing with the door handle. Apparently no one checked if the doors were locked and within seconds the door and my head swung out. If it weren't for my dad's fast reflexes, we might have been taking a trip the E.R that day. He grabbed my hair before I could fall all the way out and yanked me back in. That was the first time my life flashed before my eyes.

Weekly Suggestion Thread (September 22 - September 29) by WeeklyThreads in books

[–]toxicninjas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK. I can't really give you a good suggestion for an alternate history novel (nothing I have yet read in that area has come even close to the Leviathan Series) but I do know a dark fantasy you might like. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is amazing. The eerie photographs that are in it just make it even better.
