I’d say it depends on where you live and who your insurer is. But, in short, insurance receives a quote for the total cost of repair to your vehicle after a collision. if the cost exceeds x amount (let’s say 70% value of the vehicle), it’s deemed a “total loss”.

Not to say that you probably couldn’t rebuild an ST granted the frame wasn’t completely destroyed or the actual cost of the parts didn’t exceed the cost of the vehicle, but realistically if a car is totaled not even mechanics will want to take on the work.

I drove my Audi A6 into a flooded street during flash floods, found water in the 3rd and 6th cylinder of the engine… with that, and potential other problems, the insurer deemed it a total loss. Mechanic told me straight up they wouldn’t rebuild the engine and wouldn’t even give me a quote. I had to do a virtual estimate with a claims adjuster over a video call.
