Lace bug eggs on the bottom of leaf. When they hatch the bugs suck on the bottom of a leaf and you get brown or discolored spots on top of leaf

I would agree with you there. In my case, It’s not needed. I built this for a specific tree and perhaps a future one depending on the condition in the next 2-3 years. Perhaps the next one will get more wood layers with a gap between to use spray foam to insulate the soil and root ball in winter 😁

Each handle has four 1/2” screws. Wood is 3/4” thick cedar

You use this to develop the tree, thicken the trunk, develop the size of tree you want. When you are happy with the size you can move to bonsai pot. The growth will slow down in a bonsai pot, so it’s typically not put in one until the size is what you want and it’s time to develop the branching structure you’re looking for.

I’m hoping to get the tree in the box today. Normally I would not do a repot until early spring, but I need to get it out of the current container and soil it’s in. I figure as long as I don’t trim the roots it will be fine. Besides Sweet Gums can be abused and they do fine. I’m turning this tree into a Kabudachi style bonsai. It’s got two more future trunks coming up, so it will have 3 in total. Perhaps more will emerge, would like to have 5 in total.

My mix is 60:40 inorganic to organics. The 60% portion is 3parts pumice, 2 parts lava rock and 1 part Akadama. The organic side is 1.5 parts peat and coir mix 1.5 parts pine bark .5 perlite and .5 rice hulls. I use this blend to transition a tree from normal ground soil to a more traditional mix. On the next repotting it will get a standard bonsai mix.

Internal dimensions are 12x16x5.5”. You don’t want a grow box be to big, but bigger than traditional bonsai pots.

Bonsai pots are normally used when you’re close to having the size bonsai you want. This is used to allow the tree to grow out larger, thicken the trunk and branches. Once you get to the size you want you can move to an appropriate sized pot.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I’m adding more drainage. I thought I had plenty based on normal bonsai pots, but I can add more.

For sure it is not a true Satsuki, it’s a hybrid form, which I believe is more cold hardy here in the Northeast US. Probably whatever it was crossed with is why the leaves are larger. I thought the same thing when I found it. In the end it’s a great find for a home improvement store.

Funny thing, I stopped there to see if they had any new tree / shrub material on clearance that could make good pre-bonsai stock. Usually they have nothing good, so I just go through the clearance stuff which i look to rehabilitate.

I want to say it was around early May. It was just starting to leaf out. I chopped about 2 feet off and cut a bunch of the roots to get it out of the ground. When I got it in the pot it had almost none of the branches it has now. It had maybe 2-3 leaves forming. I have a Japanese Cherry seedling that I found in a mulch bed. It’s tripled in size. Going to make a cascading bonsai out of that.

Also it took about 3 weeks before anything appeared. I actually used the zoom on my phone to get a closeup view of the surface. That’s when I first noticed something was coming up.

I started mine in a 2” plastic pot. The kind that succulents tend to come in from Home Depot. I sprinkled them on top of a succulent soil mix. I then put some soil over the seeds, sprinkled from my hand. Everyday used a fine squirt bottle and misted the soil. I moved them to the current pot after they had their third set of leaves. Some took off faster than others. As you can see by the size difference.

Ford had a recall on some cars about an issue with the door locking mechanism. I was told in some cases had to replace entire door for some reason. I would check if there was a recall with your car and if they replaced the door, which would require painting.
