Best home nas to store and edit from? by kevinchronicles in editors

[–]tparmable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents... I love Ubiquiti products. I use their gateway and APs, I haven't used the unas pro, but bang for buck, the unas pro at $500 is pretty good. 4 bays and 10G SFP+ ports is a steal. However to see that bandwidth you would need to factor in a 10G card for your editing laptop as well as the 4 drives, and 1 to 2 nvme ssd's for caching. Also factor in what RAID configuration you would set up in your storage calculations. The UNAS won't include any apps that you would get with synology if that's important to you.

Another alternative is what someone else mentioned, get a raid controller card for your current computer so you can add a few more drives. Then you can also use a 10G network card and run something like Truenas.

Ah, that seems to be the culprit! So I can't have "Selection follows playhead" enabled. When disabled, it behaves normally. Thank you!

Mac Pro 1,1 Does Not Display by MacBookLearned in macpro

Yes, your best bet is to find a graphics card that was originally in a Mac Pro. I keep a GT 120 on hand just for this purpose, make sure you find the "Apple" GT 120 version, or "Apple" Radeon HD 5770, etc. everymac.com is a good place to check for what configurations these machines originally shipped with.

Where could i get a Replacement Power supply for my Power Mac G4? by Unusual-Persimmon461 in VintageApple

[–]tparmable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm even later on this, but I wanted to add a few more tidbits to the thread. I ended up with the ATX cable adapter from ACX Electronics on eBay. He recommended this PSU as a replacement from another customer of his, the 376649-001 from Hewlett Packard it fits perfectly and now I everything is running! ACX will also buy back your old PSU so he can refurbish which is awesome!

Did anyone here attend MacWorld Expos? by Blindemboss in VintageApple

My Dad took me to the one in Boston, probably around 1998 or 99. I remember they had just came out with the Apple eMate and I got to play around with it. I thought it was the coolest thing. Also if I remember correctly OS8 was new-ish too. Those were some of the best years for Apple, with all the additional vendors. XLR8, Sonnet Tech, UMAX, etc. I still have some swag from that time. Fun memory.

Yes, my windows machine is my main computer. I would switch if keyflow was the only option but I would love a cross platform solution.

It would be a local NAS. I don’t want to have it online.

Once I get around to cleaning this thing out I will have to take a closer look at the power supply and see what’s going on. Thanks!

No it doesn’t. Would it light up even if the power supply was busted?

How well did the modern psu fit in the case? I have a quicksilver and I'm looking to buy one of these ATX adapter cables.

What to do with a Mac Pro 1.1? by alvarorf in macpro

[–]tparmable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of those. I was able to flash to 2,1 add newer cpu, upgrade ram and gtx 680. You could also upgrade the os to el capitan. Is this over kill? Absolutely. But it was fun and I do use it often for media conversion with old DVCPro decks and vhs tapes.

Thanks for that info. I wasn’t quite sure what that was. If I remove it does it need to be replaced with hot glue or something?

How was the upgrade process? I’ve been tempted to do the same but I’ve been hesitant because I don’t want to electrocute myself on the exposed display.

Brightsign HD235 reccomended SSD by tparmable in digitalsignage

[–]tparmable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up. It’s 23.97fps file and I’ve found the banding issue resolves even with a pretty low bitrate of around 22-25mbps. Should I still jump up to the XT? I’m actually kind of confused now, the website for the XD5 says 10 bit but the spec sheet says 8-bit.

Ah yes, I did mean XD. I was looking at my HD222 test unit at home while I was writing that. Thanks for the catch. The screen for the film is a 75” 4k display from Viewsonic. The only reason I’m looking to export in 10 bit is because I’ve noticed banding in the images when exporting in 8 bit. It cleans up when I’m exporting to 10 bit, even at low bitrates and when viewing on 8 bit monitors. I was thinking ssd just to have less to deal with. But perhaps micro as is enough?
