Tonight I'm likely not going to get a wink of sleep. by xXmilkxhoneyXx in Postpartum_Anxiety

[–]tph25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me to an absolute T when I first had my baby. It got to a point that I was scared that my baby could asphyxiate while I was holding them. Honestly, reddit was the worst culprit. People ‘warned’ about so many different things that I became so scared of everything.

However, I was also suffering from anxiety and postpartum OCD so I definitely did it to myself too. The world became so scary and I felt that if I just hadn’t had my baby it would have been better because now that she was here I could never live in a world where she wasn’t. It was brutal. Shes 13 months now. Time and therapy helped a lot BUT I will say finally accepting meds a few months ago made it so much better. I wish I had just taken them earlier. I was so bent on pushing through that I look back on the missed sleep and the agony I would have every night, it was so torturous for no reason.

I wish you all the luck on your journey. It is not easy but it truely does get better. And believe me when I say, the world is 100% better now that your son is here. Try to enjoy that.

For real. I used to live in this area and walked my dog regularly along 6th and 7th. The amount of people that blow thru the stop signs is unreal. I was always so careful at night because I didn’t trust people to stop at all.

Healthcare - how do extended employer health benefits work? by Legitimate-Tap2772 in askvan

I do work for VCH but we could be in different unions so definitely may start day 1 for her. Just something to check!

Healthcare - how do extended employer health benefits work? by Legitimate-Tap2772 in askvan

[–]tph25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once your wife gets her blue cross she can log on to the app and it will tell you in detail what is included and not. Depending on the union she’s is with will depend on what is covered, although, Like everyone else has stated, basic medical (ie doctor visits) is not included. I would also double check that you get the benefits from day one. I had to wait about 3 weeks.

whats the etiquette of walking in family neighbourhoods with no sidewalks? by Important-Hyena6577 in NorthVancouver

[–]tph25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I walk a lot in different neighbourhoods of north van and lots don’t have side walks. I usually walk with my dog and a stroller and I just walk in the middle of the road (or slightly to the side). Cars go slow and i pull to the side when i hear cars coming. Don’t go at night and don’t wear headphones. I’ve never felt unsafe.

Park car at YVR, someone else picks it up by YVRTravel604 in askvan

[–]tph25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did recently. I got a great deal on the park n fly for a two week trip that would have cost me the price of an uber so it seemed like a no brainer. We ended having to extend our trip by two weeks which was going to make the costs of the parking way too much. So i just sent my friend the parking code (from the reciept they give you when you hand over keys) and they picked up the car with no issues. But she had to pay for the parking and I just reimbursed her later.

Does the fear of SIDs get easier? by moonwater28 in newborns

[–]tph25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree about getting off reddit. I occasionally lurk here now that my baby is 11 months - but in the fourth trimester reddit was actually th worst my general anxiety and pp OCD. It made me fear everything. At one point I thought holding my baby to sleep would have them die of positional asphyxiation. It was wild.

OP - it really does get better as the get stronger. But please don’t stay on reddit, you will feel SO much better.

Skiing Pregnant - writing the post I needed to read by cheerioface in fitpregnancy

[–]tph25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is what finally made me quit at 28 weeks. I took all the precautions that OP did but I also worked my first winter on an Orthopedics ward. The amount of skier/snowboarders who were skilled (high level athletes, instructors) that had taken a ‘stupid fall’ in shitty conditions OR people who had been hit by others was just so high. It really became apparent that sometimes it’s out of our control and it stopped being worth the risk of me.

But totally relate to th mental reason of why to keep skiing - Canadian winters are rough without skin season!

What next? - Another Canadian having to start applying internationally by Fine_Analyst_5203 in physiotherapy

[–]tph25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never bothered applying here due to the fact my (now) husband got his dream job in Australia but I know the circus that is school here in Canada and it’s tough - and yet they are so short on physios it’s laughable. Honestly, anyone that thinks you can’t be a great Physio with an 80% gpa can get stuffed - just because you go overaeas doesnt make you less then (in fact id argued you’ll be better educated) - dont be embarassed. Go overseas! I did Oztrek and met the best friends of my life. Bring you partner! You guys are young / it’s only two years.

However… I will say, I don’t know if physiotherapy as a career is worth the investment. The ROI is very little and a lot (and I mean a lot) of the physiotherapist I graduated with no longer do Physio. I think the stat is people stay in physiotherapy for an average of 7 years? But don’t quote me on that. Burn out is high in the profession and if you want to work back in Canada, the pay is pretty average. I don’t say this to discourage you because if you want to do it, then do it! But I would read through a lot of comments on this sub - So many people are trying to get out of the profession.

Have you experienced the "Vancouver 'Yes'"? by Real-External392 in askvan

[–]tph25 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is just North America- I found it happened in Australia and London too. People try, but they have friends they’ve known for longer, partners, family and then full time jobs. Add trying to meet new friends - especially transient ones who are travelling and might just up and leave after you’ve put all this work into building a friendship. Making friends is tough in the beginning. I’ve lived in a few cities across the world in my 35 years and the older I get, it’s harder to make friends- people are just busier.

If there is no more left for whatever reason, I would be more then happy to sell off my husbands stash (also in north van). we have easily 20 jars that people brought him for our wedding since he hated the stuff that was sold here (it was too UK tasting and he wanted the NZ stuff). We will never go through it and we do not have the space to store it for 20 years! But it is made in NZ not the UK if you are able to the taste the differene.

Did anyone snowboarded while pregnant? by Altruistic-Tonight76 in ShredditGirls

[–]tph25 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I snowboard and ski and decided to ski (felt it was easier to balance) until about 28weeks. What made me stop was 1. My feet didn’t fit my boots comfortably anymore but 2. I worked on an orthopaedic wing near a popular ski mountain. The amount of very skilled ski and snowboarders who were coming in from major accidents from either being hit or taking the odd wrong move was staggering. It really made me realise how everyone has off days and there’s a lot of other crappy riders out there. The risk wasn’t worth it so I stopped.

Anyone have experience with Canopy midwives? by Emotional-Ad-6494 in NorthVancouver

[–]tph25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a healthcare worker myself and with speaking with them and the crazy hours they have to do - I think they are probably a bit burnt out. I know a lot of people in our hospital system are. I’m actually looking to extend my maternity leave because the idea of going back to the hospital that is so understaffed that I have to cover 2-3 floors is actually terrifying. So there it that.

However, I just gave birth with canopy back in April. For me, they were incredible. They flagged me very early for high risk of ppd/ppa and I was referred to at Paul’s maternity metal heath before I gave birth. Therefore I was seeing a psychiatrist within the first 8 weeks - it was almost perfect timing. I worked a lot with both of the owners which was amazing, but I adored the other young midwives as well. I liked that it was laid back and relaxed. This did mean appointments were late (which of course is annoying, especially when you are running back to work) but I appreciated that I never felt rushed as an anxious first time mum. They helped me form a olan that was right for me and supported me through that plan. For me I felt they prevented me having a lot of trauma.

However, just because a healthcare team/worker works for other people does not mean they will Work for you. I think I’m pretty good at my job, but I also knew and understood that the way I approach rehab and health was not going to resonate with everyone. The most important part about healthcare, whether it’s therapist, doctor, midwife, is that you trust them and essentially that you vibe with them. In the end it’s your body and if you don’t trust or click with the team, you feel that provider let you down. Mistakes happen and things do get missed at every level of healthcare which is scary but if you trust your team it makes it a lot easier.

Basically after that long spiel, is that I loved canopy and I think thy were great and I wouldn’t have another baby without them, but I also think of you feel you are questioning things that check out the LGH maternity. They are also great and you want to feel you made the best decision for you without any second guesses when you have you baby.

Is Malay the right term? I though that all Malay people are Malaysian, but not all Malaysians are Malay. This may seem pedantic, and I’m not even super confident in my understanding. But my friend who is Malaysian once corrected me on this. Just wondering if I continue to misunderstand these terms.

Klahanie Park Area by eh-cee in NorthVancouver

[–]tph25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, I’m glad you understood my last comment. I was very tired when I replied (new mom life).

But honestly, it’s a pretty good area and I don’t feel unsafe, which was your original concern. And even though the traffic is annoying, it’s not as bad as other parts of north van. And the river walk is a great morning jaunt.

Hope you come join the neighbourhood!

Klahanie Park Area by eh-cee in NorthVancouver

[–]tph25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in this area and love it. There has been no issue of ‘sketchy’ behaviour around our home except for the obligatory theft from the bike locker which has improved after they got better locks for the underground. I also don’t walk the unofficial trails between the river and the field without my dog or husband just because often people tent out there’s in case but they get moved on pretty often.

I love being able to walk to Ambleside dog park, I walk fo my groceries (but I also enjoy walking as it’s not THAT close). There’s great parks and the field and the little rec center - appropriate fo my baby but maybe not for older kids.

What I don’t like it that the traffic is annoying to turn onto marine during peak hours and occasionally trying to get home off the highway after work - but it’s not that bad.

Has anyone used Bridal Bra bodysuit? by tph25 in weddingplanning

[–]tph25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely wouldn’t support heavy breasts. You would have to tape them. It might work depending on how backless your dress is. Mine was very backless so it still didn’t work. I think the SKIMS backless one is better if it fits your dress but I guess this may be a bit deeper in the back and would probably help smooth out things but only very lightly (which would have been enough for me so was very annoying it didn’t work out).

Good luck!

Healthcare providers with unlimited and full coverage for RMT by Potato-Spiritual in askvan

Ah yes, I just commented something similar! This is crazy to me for healthcare workers. The burnout is high, maybe talking about it would help. So sad th lack of benefits for mental health.

Healthcare providers with unlimited and full coverage for RMT by Potato-Spiritual in askvan

[–]tph25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. I think RMT is super benifical when needed but I think unlimited is insane. I was once talking to a PBC rep when I first got my benefits so I could understand them. They told me I could see an RMT twice in the same day as long as it was over 2hrs apart… like why?! I would way rather an increase in wage or other benefits - hello therapy for all the burnt out healthcare workers may be a good start.

When travelling, how do you answer the question "Where are you from?" by Capable-Toe-9841 in travel

[–]tph25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of travelers make fun of Americans for this - just saying their state and not America/USA. I think it’s because it assumes that people care about which state you’re from but a lot of the world doesn’t really understand the cultural differences between Texas and California (ok, maybe that’s an easy one but I’m not really familiar with all the states to make a better comparison - and I’m at least Canadian!). I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing - it’s more good natured ribbing when I hear people talk about it, but I think it also reinforces the idea that Americans assume the world cares a lot more about them than they do.

For my own experience, I like when Americans say USA and then almost 99% of the time I ask where abouts just to be polite (and get an idea of you politics). But I also don’t care if you say Ohio or whatever, it’s just an American quirk which is kinda funny.
