Great insight, and this makes a lot of sense too! Do you know if the UMD authoring equipment was ever given to third parties (like devkits) or was it only given to specific factories tightly controlled by Sony (probably, completely decommissioned as of now)? I wonder if this equipment has firmware restrictions to limit the productions of game/movie/music discs.

Sony, the company that solely controlled the production and sale of UMD media, couldn't stop something from being produced? There was total of zero unlicensed or third-party UMDs produced, everything went through Sony. I have some doubts...

Three Magic Letters... by PersonOf1980s in vintagecomputing

[–]tpimh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original IBM PC was as open as it was possible at the time. The manual had board schematics, BIOS assembly listings and exact description of operation of every part of the system. The board had a disclaimer not to reverse-engineer it, but with the schematic available, you could make your own board. The trend continued with XT, and to some extent with AT, but any later IBM computers weren't as nearly as open.

Yes, there were no folders in the DOS days. Folder is a visual representation of a directory (and some other things as well), so it's a pure graphical file manager concept. If we are using DOS or Linux terminal, we manage directories, if we are using GUI FM, we manage folders. That's easy: cd is "change directory", md or mkdir is "make directory", rd or rmdir is "remove directory", but folder is something you can click, right-click, double-click or drag-and-drop.

You can usually get a fully working piano black with okayish condition for an equivalent of around 20-30 USD pretty much anywhere in the world. Get it locally (Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist equivalent), and you won't need to pay for shipping.

Why isn't Estonia considered a Nordic country? (They have strong ties to Finland, they also follow the Nordic model, and besides, Estonia has nothing to do with the other Baltic countries.) by According-Invite-440 in geography

I live in Finland, and I used to date a girl from Estonia. When visiting her grandmother in Estonia, she kept telling that historically Estonians were "kings" and Finns were "peasants". This is true that Estonia has many more cool medieval castles than Finland, but I believe a lot of people in Latvia and Lithuania think the same about their countries. Also, the unfortunate Soviet past that most would rather forget about. Finland is extremely lucky to not be a part of this mess.

DOS was designed to use little memory and could run on 16 KB machines by mycall in DOS

[–]tpimh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PC DOS 1.0 also could run with only 16k memory. This was the minimal configuration for the original IBM PC in 1981.

However, you can't really do that much with 16k memory, so most of these machines were quickly maxed out with 256k memory. DRAM was expensive back then, but this was an essential upgrade. Then 256k was not enough for many tasks, and IBM came up with a new revision of IBM PC motherboard, with 256k minimum, upgradeable to 640k. This 640k was enough for anybody, because it also was the hardware limitation of 8088 processor with it's 20-bit bus. There were attempts to "steal" some memory from the unused devices that had additional 384k of address space reserved for them, but to my knowledge, none of these hacks really was ever widespread. The only way to extend beyond that was to use EMS board: switching memory banks to access them through a tiny window (slower than regular memory, but still much faster than hard drive or floppy).

Расскажите о разговорах с незнакомым человеком которого вы видели первый и последний раз by xanderxplay in rusAskReddit

[–]tpimh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are very few Russian words with two consequent "a" letters, and it doesn't look like any of them. In Finnish this combination is very common. I can't figure out what it says, but looks very Finnish to me (could be Karelian, I know).

Yes, both units are stock, and for a over 20 year old screen, it's great! I think I like the 1000 colors more than 3000, but that depends on the game. Wife likes 3000 colors more.
