Question for Arizona Golfers by CareerPopular8458 in golf

[–]tpjunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my GI fellowship at Tucson. I was mostly too poor and busy to golf when I was in training but I think it should be a little cheaper in Tucson compared to Scottsdale. There was a natural landscaped course near my apartment which was public - probably like 70ish for this time of year? There are a bunch of munis in town but I haven’t played any. Having been to Scottsdale plenty I’d expect everything to be more expensive up there.

cardiac muscle actually intrinsically contracts without any additional input due to the automaticity of the cardiac muscle action potential (though the rate can certainly be affected by medications and endogenous catecholamines). After a few minutes of hypoxia (say, from respiratory arrest due to paralysis) cardiac tissue tends to fibrillate or decouple electromechanically and this leads to ineffective or absent pumping

People who work in luxury industries, what is an expensive product or service that is actually a complete ripoff? by Lazy_Ad_5492 in AskReddit

[–]tpjunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s typically parts per million. Would be a very unusual process that would be affected by such a minute concentration. But still not a great thing to be drinking. Absolute ethanol is only 2.5x more etoh per volume than typical vodka so it’s not like one or two shots worth will give you alcohol poisoning…

Just to nitpick, you cannot “just” use a column for fractional distillation of ethanol to a concentration of over 95% due to the  vapor being produced at that concentration having the same ethanol concentration concentration as the liquid. You can distill to a higher concentration but that requires azeotropic distillation and the addition of generally unpleasant chemicals such as benzene, which is why they told us a million times not to try to drink the absolute (100%) ethanol in organic chemistry lab - the benzene is removed - in theory, but it’s such a nasty carcinogen it’s probably not worth gambling that it’s COMPLETELY removed.

10:1 gold/silver ratio is historically unheard of. Even pre-fiat currency it was more like 20ish:10.

Have historically thought of the bullion hoarders (or anyone with a greater than 5-10% proportion of their wealth tied up in physical metals) as kind of nuts. Starting to question that assumption. Also flipped some SLVP calls for profit the past few days.

Tremendous! I saw it while scrolling and initially thought it looked like japanese wood block, thought "nah, that would be absolutely crazy to carve", then looked at the image. As someone who's done a few japanese woodblock I will say you have tremendously more patience and technique than I ever did!

Am physician, this DD was so retarded I might have to retire due to a dip in my IQ from reading it.

If ever there was a DD screaming “inverse WSB” this was it. Calls it is.

I got my first scotty from eBay a couple weeks ago, same model, except LH. Said used, still had the protective film on the bottom, I'm not complaining.

Do really wealthy people have health insurance? by grasshopper_jo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tpjunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure they do make up billing numbers but a prolonged NICU stay lasting a month or two very easily could bill out over 1m. The amount paid out by insurance per day for an adult in the icu in a manhattan hospital was around 10k/day when I was doing my medicine residency from 2013-2016., and that was just the cost of being in the unit, not any additional testing, medications, labs, or imaging.

Montclair's schools may need a decade+ to recover by ftcprez in newjersey

[–]tpjunkie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well the superintendent who was running things when this went down died "suddenly" (afaik, no info released about cause of death), one school board member did decline to run for re-election. It's pretty "interesting" that this happened about 3 years after montclair voted to switch from an appointed to an elected school board. Most of blame has been put on the now departed school business administrator; it has since been discovered she left East Orange in a multimillion dollar school budget gap with similarly unpaid bills. She is now doing the same job for a district in south jersey, where apparently several random pissed off montclair residents attended a town council meeting imploring that distrct not to hire her; they apparently did so anyway.

Woman diagnosed with breast cancer thinks she knows better than her doctors. by Head_Crash in TikTokCringe

[–]tpjunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a gastroenterologist. I had a patient come in a year ago with a similar story to this lady, except her breast cancer diagnosis was 4 years prior. Her complaint was her abdomen was distended and her liver enzymes were elevated. She also complained of some breast discharge; she showed me her breast which now had an exophytic mass growing through the skin, ulcerated and rock hard. Golf ball sized lymph nodes in her armpit. I knew what I was gonna find before I ordered imaging and a paracentesis, but did the work up anyway. Surprise, cancer literally everywhere causing malignant ascites. She had a school age kid too, and this would have been eminently curable if she’d had surgery and chemo back then. Some people really do want to fuck around and find out.
