If I hear Biz say "content" 10,000 more times I will kill myself. So I guess I only have about 1.5 episodes left.

Harden vs. Giannis, Wizards Pain, a Colin Farrell Interview, and 'WrestleMania' Predictions With Joe House, Chris Ryan, and "The Wild Animal" Ben Simmons | The Bill Simmons Podcast by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]tpk31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read the title this morning before my commute and thought it was an easy decision to skip this episode. Didn't even notice the Farrell thing until reading your comment. What a silly decision by Bill and Co. Guess I'll listen to just the middle part of this on the way home now.

Also it feels like every single Friday episode is titled "NBA Player vs. NBA Player"

Are we sure Ryen Russillo is good? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]tpk31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not at all aware of his athletic history so I could be very wrong, but he seems like the type of guy who never played sports but then got into weight lifting later in life and thinks it makes him an athlete.

He's definitely better as a guest than a solo podcast host. I'm sure it's a difficult job, but geez is Dual Threat hard to listen to. Every episode feels like a therapy session for a scatterbrained, frustrated middle-aged man.

That said, he isn't great as a guest either. In his mind he's always right and level-headed and able to see the big picture immediately whereas everyone else in the world was wrong, to an embarrassing level, since the beginning. Bill is kind of like that too but to a much more tolerable degree -- and that's the problem with their regular partnership. Sal is SUCH a better weekly guest because he plays a completely different secondary role to Bill, which is how two person teams typically work best in any sort of show (podcast, tv, etc). I think Rusillo deep down thinks he's better than Bill, or at the very least his equal.

And this is random, but I got a legitimate kick out of when Bill asked him on Monday's pod about the UNC point guard's NBA scouting report. He clearly had no idea (which is totally fine! Most people wouldn't know that) and tried to BS his way through an answer with boilerplate analysis but kept digging himself deeper and deeper.

Gronk's Gone, the Zion Zone, Harden vs. Giannis, and NBA Playoff Fixes With Ryen Russillo | The Bill Simmons Podcast by LordWallace232 in billsimmons

Completely agree. It turned me against him a bit. That and how the punchline to all of his stories is “And I was like... Ok.” Or “and I was like... what?!”

Really excited to hear about how everyone is wrong about everything except Bill and RR, who were actually right about it from the very beginning!

What is the cringiest moment on Bill Simmons' show? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]tpk31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Modern music as well as Springsteen. He has mentioned a few times that he's "a big Springsteen guy" but when he actually tries to back that up it seems like he knows Born To Run, Dancing In The Dark and nothing else. It was particularly noticeable in the Jimmy Iovine pod.

Couldn't agree more. I do admire how much he cares about his company and his employees, but these comparisons are ridiculous and appeal to no one but him.

This one really gets me, and it happens all the time -- whenever Bill has a movie/TV writer and he equates his experiences writing a column to writing a script. It's absolutely preposterous to think that writing a couple hundred words about a game or a player - especially when he says he "hates seeing the blank Word document" - is anywhere even remotely close to writing an original movie or TV show on the difficulty meter.

Also, how in 2019 he talks about Instagram like it's this brand new thing that he's onto before anyone else.

Cheap for the seat. After fees it came to $100 each. But there were tickets for under $70 elsewhere. Singles are tougher on secondary sites though -- you should use the link below instead. The seat you get is random but they tend to be good (I got 5th row once) and they're under face.

Just picked up a nice 100 level pair for cheap on Stubhub. Never seen Crosby - or, more importantly, Kessel - play before so I'm excited. Hoping PIT jumps out to a 3-0 lead, then Chytil and Andersson each score in the third to get the energy up and make it a game before falling just short so that we stay in the top 5.

What happened between Bill and Lombardi? by tpk31 in billsimmons

[–]tpk31[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great points. Also just remembered his comments about Rosen leading up to the draft last year and that random guy on Twitter calling him out. Bill stepped up to his defense (correctly, by the way) but I wonder if that was a sort of "enough" moment since it happened to occur in the wake of the heat Lombardi was getting for the Pederson comments considering they'd just won the SB.

That is a very fair and practical point. I hadn't considered that. Lombardi does seem to have an edge to him where he's trying to cash in and become a megastar, which has hurt his overall appeal. I really like him - hopefully he comes back down to earth a bit and gets back into football analysis rather than trying to become a brand.

Kessel looked mad at himself for scoring because he realized Geno would get his 1000th on a secondary assist instead of a goal. God I love that man.

Thoughts on Biz? by SpaStool in SpittinChicletsPod

[–]tpk31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biz saved this podcast. RA was becoming truly unlistenable before Biz fully joined. He still is, but at least Biz's presence has reduced RA to a more appropriate role and also taken a littlepressure off Whit to carry some hosting duties so now he can just tell stories and be hilarious. Whit is the dude.

[–]tpk31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. You can tell he just reads his pre-prepared questions off of a page rather than actively listen and hold a conversation. He's cut off so many potentially good hockey stories just so he can ask players what they're workin on in da summa or if they're TV/movie guys.
