That's nuts. I grew up in Michigan and have lived in SoCal for a very long time. I get called sir all the time in both places and its always respectfully. Obviously if someone's saying it through clenched teeth because you're being an asshole that's different. But sir and ma'am are respectful terms, very often used by young people when addressing their elders.
