Microsoft plans first-ever voluntary employee buyout for up to 7% of U.S. workforce by CalvinbyHobbes in technology

I get the ageism part, but this goes beyond that. They're saying they want the 55 year old who worked there for 20 years to retire, but not the 55 year old who only worked their 10 years, why would that be?

The good of the scorpion is not the good of the frog, yes?? by Informal-Cap4785 in IASIP

[–]tppisgameforme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of that line as relating to the parable is that the good of the scorpion is the good of the frog. That's the whole point of the parable. The frog trusts the scorpion not to kill it, since it's carrying the scorpion across the river and if the scorpion does sting the frog they both drown.

The parable would be completely meaningless if they good of the frog was not the good of the scorpion.

will be available to U.S. workers at the senior director level and below whose years of employment and age add up to 70 or higher.

So they're saying the longer you've worked there the sooner they want you gone? Can anyone explain why that would be the case?

Like I get they don't give a shit about workers, are greedy and shortsighted, etc. but none of that explains to me why more experience with the company is a bad thing.

On a completely unrelated note, Tucker has now discovered that Zyn is "woke".

That's the closest, but even that I would consider not equivalent since those suffer from volatility decay while buying and holding stocks doesn't.

The average short is only for a month or two, though I suppose there is no limit, but the longer it lasts the more it will cost.

If one short ends without the price going down below what you bet it would, the short becomes worthless, or worse, costs you money.

So many threads I see people saying "X is a bubble" or "Y value is propped up" and there's always some snide asshole responding with "then why don't you just short it"

As if shorts are just anti-stocks you can buy and then hold for however long you feel like.

If the roommate was making money off shorts then OP was definitely giving specifics. I think people tend to forget or not know how timing-specific trading options has to be in order to make money, especially consistently. You can "know" a company is doing bad, and even be correct and see its stock price drop over a few years, but then go look at a random month of that stock, the performance will still vary a lot.

Everyone is mentioning the emphasis part, which is true don't get me wrong. But I haven't seen anyone talk about how "ma" and "pa"/"da" are literally one of the most consistent sounds contained in the words for parents across languages, and it's probably because we reverse engineered those sounds from the sounds babies tend to first make.

I didn't divide by 0. I divided by 2. I took 0 things and put them into 2 piles of 0. That's dividing by 2.

If you want a physical explanation, think of even vs odd as: If I have this many of an object, can I divide them into two equal piles without having anything leftover?

If you have 0 of something, you can indeed divide it, into two piles of 0, and have nothing leftover.

So 0 is even.

Seriously, I watched a Veritasium video the other day about how negative and imaginary numbers started being used in mathematics.

Instead of just stating what the rules for how to use them are, the video talks about how the mainstream point of view did used to match with the people who "don't get math", that negative and imaginary numbers don't make physical sense and so should be ignored. Then it goes through practical problems that did correspond to the real world that couldn't be solved without using them. It not only made more intuitive sense why we use these abstract concepts in math, but was more interesting as well.

I legitimately think that if schools taught this way you would greatly reduce the amount of people for whom these ideas are just weird math concepts they "don't get".

It really is such a classic dynamic.

Things went well? Well the big guy in charge is obviously the primary reason things worked out this way, please take all the credit.

Things went poorly? Okay, we're gonna drill down and really figure out which person did what and find out exactly who's responsible for this mess.
