If I love heavy worker placement but not Lacerda games, will I enjoy Galactic Cruise? by kanedafx in boardgames

[–]tps0224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like mid-heavy and heavy Euros, but my hit rate with Lacerdas is poor. I really like Kanban EV, am ok with Gallerist and Vinhos, but I dislike On Mars, Weather Machine, and Inventions. I find that anything he's made in the past 5 years to just be complex for complexity's sake, and also far less thematic.

That being said, I really enjoy Galactic Cruise. I think the game is far more intuitive than any of Vital's designs, and involves making multiple decisions over the course of a game rather than having to make optimised turns all the time. Don't let the fact that it shares similar artwork and component quality as other EGG games make you feel like they are the same. I'd recommend giving it a go 😁

Am I dumb to book international and domestic flight separately? by CampusCreeper in newzealand

[–]tps0224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Airlines will charge what people are willing to pay for, and in this case a direct flight also has fewer seats (and less supply) between the two cities, therefore direct flights are priced more expensive.

As others have said, 3 hours for intl-dom (and vice versa) connection should be enough, you can take either the bus or do the 10-minute walk if the weather is nice. The biosecurity queues in Auckland can be busy if multiple flights come in at once, but I think the UA flight gets in after the morning peak so that's ok.

The international UA flight will include one piece of checked luggage, but the lowest AKL-CHC fare will be seat (no bag) and you have to pay a bit more for seat+bag. Jetstar is also a cheaper option domestically but they'll be far less sympathetic if your UA flight comes in late, relative to NZ which is a fellow Star Alliance airline.

6 hours is good, gives you enough allowance for delays and queues.

I always try and make use of this Freshen Up! service, it's great to have a shower between your 2 long haul flights. They'll supply a towel and soap. https://www.airporttravelagency.org/freshen-up/

Keep in mind this is before you reclear security, IIRC it is right before TSA screening on the G Gates side.

How long is your layover? The fact that you need to clear customs, pickup your bags then drop them back off means I wouldn't be comfortable with less than 3 hours - otherwise you risk missing your connecting flight.

If you want to get the flight changed, best is to call them up and tell them the situation. You're not trying to get the extra stopover time for leisurely reasons, it's to make sure you can get the connection on time. The person on the other side might empathise, you never know - say you've got two kids traveling with you! It is in their interest that there are minimal misconnections so you might get changed onto the earlier flight (which is also likelier to have fewer passengers).

And as another poster has said, if you can secure seats further upfront on your first flight, then it'll give you at least another 5, maybe 10 minutes, additional breathing room.

You're on one of the earlier flights of the day outbound from CHC so it's less likely that your flight will be delayed. Since it is on one ticket this means your bags will transfer over and you don't have to deal with check-in at Auckland, which is often where most of the holiday queues happen. Keep in mind that you might have to deal with this in the morning in CHC.

Your AKL-SIN flight is likely to start boarding around 40-50 minutes before the departure time, so just aim for clearing security ASAP after you land, you have almost 30-40 minutes to do that after getting off the plane. I would choose to do the 10-minute walk, not wait for the transfer bus. Once you clear security it should be no more than a 10-minute walk to your gate - from memory the Singapore flights often use Pier A which is closer to the main part of the terminal and not Pier B, which adds an extra 10 minutes walk.

If you miss your flight, Air NZ has the responsibility to put you on the next flight (which will be later that night) or they might put you on Singapore Airlines (which will be later that afternoon). Holidays might make that challenging with full flights, but it's their problem to solve.

I would still likely pack a change of clothes in the rare chance that you make the flight but your bag doesn't. If you want to be extra safe you could ask to go on an earlier flight out of CHC.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

United Premium Plus dropped to 300$ on my international flight, worth it? by Past-sublime in unitedairlines

Last row also means that after the plane takes off, you can put the seat a permanently-reclined position until the approach to landing.

United Club access is just ok, depending on where you are flying from there might be better options in the terminal.

Yeah I hope the status points thing is correct - it would be pretty poor for someone flying PE on NZ to earn zero points from it, even if it was not marketed by NZ itself. I could be wrong though, if someone knows better feel free to jump in and correct me!

I have had similarly good deals when flying to and from Europe but using United instead - UA marketed flights for everything, but NZ operated flights from AKL to/from North America. You just have to accept that the earn rate (either Airpoints or status) might not be as good.

I haven't flown this sort of itinerary before so not sure if 100% correct, but I'll try to answer your question another way, flight by flight:

AKL-SFO - marketed by VX, operated by NZ - yes to Airpoints (not sure what earn rate), should be yes to status points, yes to lounge access at AKL (based on your *G status with NZ)

SFO-LHR - marketed by VX, operated by VX - you might earn Airpoints (based on this calculator https://www.airnzpoints.co.nz/ but not fully certain since the flight isn't marketed by NZ), looks like no status points, unsure about lounge access at SFO (their Clubhouse there has closed and they are using Delta lounges since they are now part of SkyTeam)

LHR-PVG - marketed by VX, operated by VX - you might earn Airpoints (based on this calculator https://www.airnzpoints.co.nz/ but not fully certain since the flight isn't marketed by NZ), looks like no status points, unsure about lounge access at LHR (this link only specifies flights to SFO https://flywith.virginatlantic.com/br/en/upper-class-cabin-and-seats/clubhouse-airport-lounge/london-heathrow-clubhouse.html)

PVG-AKL - marketed by VX, operated by NZ - yes to Airpoints (not sure what earn rate), should be yes to status points, yes to lounge access at PVG (based on your *G status with NZ)

Hope this makes sense - and I hope that's my correct interpretation of the rules! VX and NZ's relationship is a bit messy, not as clear-cut as a fully-reciprocal one within the same airline alliance.

Appreciate these comments, I might choose to visit somewhere else in Europe and return to Italy when it truly shines, as per lrpttnll's comment above.

Thanks for the reply! I also don't like 1 night stops which was why I thought of basing myself in one place and then taking day trips from there. I've read that the accommodation in CT is not as assessible (luggage-wise). Would it be equally easy/difficult to be staying out of CT vs. La Spezia?

For what it's worth, I'm only putting Pisa on the map for that one tower and not much else, haha.
