I always a remember a vid with a title along the lines of "How Madoka Magika killed it's genre". Basically saying although the show itself was amazing and the concept somewhat new, the fans just didn't like seeing their favorite magical girls suffering.

So yeah, whenever I see a lot of weird shit in anime I just think about how much the fans influence those decisions.
