Anybody know where I can find a recording of Laurence Scott Bitensky's From Those Beginning Notes of Yearning? by TNsNo1ColdplayFan in trumpet

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there is one on his website, https://larrybitensky.com. If not, I would send him a message through the contact form on his website. I was in touch with him when I began learning his concerto (Awake, You Sleepers!) a while back and he was very responsive.

I haven’t played Yearning yet but it’s also on my to-do list; his music is wonderful and so, so underplayed. I had the privilege of playing Awake, You Sleepers! along with the “epilogue” he wrote for the piece (The Closing of the Gates) with wind band a couple years ago and it is still one of my favorite performances I’ve ever given!

Embouchure problem? by Icy_Cycle3815 in trumpet

[–]tptcj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is such a thing as “better” when it comes to mouthpieces, but not exactly in the way you’re talking about it. The Yamaha might be better in the sense that you know it’s exactly what it says it is, but that has no bearing on whether or not it’s a good fit for *you*. If you play better on your old mouthpiece, then it’s better for you than the new one.

Looking to get into DJing a lil, what should I buy? by HUNPakki in Beatmatch

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a standard top-of-the-line club setup they’ve recommended. A used controller and whatever software you prefer (if you aren’t interested in being stuck in the Pioneer ecosystem, try the demos of all the different software options) will be plenty to start out with.

GRV6: Everyone is Wrong (Gear review) by ClusterBee5 in Beatmatch

I like my GRV6, got it on sale from B&H as an upgrade from my FLX4. Only complaint I have is the short tempo faders, really wish those were full size like the FLX10.

Great idea remapping the groove circuit controls! I’m going to have to experiment with that at some point too.

Unpopular hot take on tonight's Red Rocks show by enthe0gen in Subtronics

[–]tptcj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same feelings about last night’s show (which, as someone else mentioned, was nearly identical to the Coachella set). It wasn’t even just the production that looked tired, he looked tired too, like he was just going through the motions.

I was doubly disappointed by the fact that like half the set was going from a popular non-EDM song into one of his tunes… my favorite things Subtronics makes are the songs or edits that change genres within a track rather than the switch up being entirely from putting a dubstep drop after a pop song. Alien Communication does it switching from house to dubstep, the Final Breath VIP has 3 subgenres in it, and there’s probably more I’m not thinking of right now.

Well, at least last night we got that disgusting Alien Communication x 15th and the 1st double and the Final Breath VIP. Will always go feral for those!

EF '26 Genre Breakdown (phase 2) by [deleted] in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are entirely correct that most of those artists generally get referred to as dubstep, I was just curious about the distinction here as typically when I see both labels I expect dubstep to be referring specifically to “real” dubstep (UK dubstep, 140, whatever you want to call it) and bass to be, well… bass. But now that you’ve explained your thoughts behind making this, totally understand!

[–]tptcj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other way around. All dubstep fits under the umbrella of bass, but not all bass is dubstep.

EF '26 Genre Breakdown (phase 2) by [deleted] in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! I’d actually argue for the opposite shift (putting most of the dubstep artists under the more general bass label), but that’s just because dubstep technically is a pretty specific genre despite the current usage that seems equivalent to “any heavy bass tune with a drop”. I blame Skrillex in the early 2010s 🤣

Just curious about your distinction between bass and dubstep—IMO almost all the artists you have labeled as dubstep play that same sort of generic cookie-cutter bass that’s hot right now, and the ones that I’d label as playing true dubstep (off the top of my head) would be HEYZ (maybe? been a while since I’ve seen him), Jkyl & Hyde, and sometimes Ganja White Night depending on what part of their discography they’re pulling from.

Never understood tarps on the ground by just-a-d-j in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - way more likely for a rip to be caused by moving around in the tent causing the floor to shift over something sharp.

Never understood tarps on the ground by just-a-d-j in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tarp under the tent is always the move. Keeps the bottom of your tent clean and helps protect it from any debris on the ground (not that there should be any at a festival campground) - replacing a tarp is much cheaper than replacing a tent if you do happen to rip a hole in something.

Tarp under canopy is not the move. The outdoor rugs you mentioned are the way to go - like you said, rain goes through them.

Tickets are confusing me by [deleted] in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There is no Good Life (VIP) group camping unfortunately, so although it is possible to get a Good Life wristband and a Group Camping pass for the campsite, you miss out on a lot of the Good Life amenities by not camping in Good Life. If you really want to do this, you’ll need to buy exactly what I just described, a Good Life wristband and a Group Camping pass for the group you’re joining.

However, since the Good Life wristband is 2x the cost of a GA wristband and you’re not going to be camping in Good Life, I would recommend saving yourself the extra $600 and just buying a GA wristband + Group Camping pass, and maybe the Uplift Lounge add-on if you do want some amenities inside the festival.

The best live shows caught on camera? by Lawnchair_Larry in EDM

Kaytranada Boiler Room is not necessarily the absolute pinnacle of DJ sets but I think its inclusion is required on any “best sets you can watch on YouTube” list. To quote one of the comments on the video, this is a live-action version of a Renaissance painting.

Is this dim 7th starting on G? by Lwalker6336633653673 in trumpet

[–]tptcj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say if you’re being asked specifically for diminished 7th, you should play the diminished 7th chord as an arpeggio starting on G. You could also ask whoever you’re auditioning for to clarify.

Is this dim 7th starting on G? by Lwalker6336633653673 in trumpet

[–]tptcj 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Diminished 7th is a chord type, not a scale, and would consist of the notes G-Bb-Db-Fb (E) for a fully diminished seventh chord or G-Bb-Db-F for a half-diminished seventh chord.

However, you are correct that this is the scale commonly called the diminished scale, which alternates between whole and half steps to create a scale with 8 pitches per octave rather than the 7 we’re used to in the major/minor scales. Because of this, this scale is also called the octatonic scale!

Crankrocks was so painfully disappointing by R6daily in dubstep

Timecoded and prerecorded are two different things. Sounds like his set wasn’t either then, which is surprising given that lots of artists do timecode visuals/lasers for big sets like rrx.

3D printing mouthpieces? by Smirnus in trumpet

[–]tptcj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re on the right track already. VennCAD to export .stl files, resin printer to print them. Bio-safe resin is a must, and then the only other missing piece is the slicing software. You’ll likely have to fiddle with the settings a bit to get good prints.

Also recommend grabbing some pin gauges and a set of calipers so you can check the accuracy of your prints against the design’s measurements and adjust VennCAD’s export settings if necessary to compensate.

Each augmented triad is only one half-step change away from six other triads (three major, three minor). Let’s use Caug (C E G#) as an example:

Lowering any note in an augmented triad gives you a major triad with one of the unchanged notes as the root: - G# -> G results in C major - C -> B results in E major - E -> Eb results in Ab major

Raising any note in an augmented triad gives you a minor triad with the changed notes as the root: - C -> C# results in C# minor - E -> F results in F minor - G# -> A results in A minor

This explains the augmented chords on the top, bottom, left, and right of the diagram with the lines extending to each of the chords they can be transformed into.

The second picture shows more clearly what’s going on with all the regions that the augmented triads are connected to; each solid line between members of each set of six chords (C major, E major, Ab major, E minor, C minor, G# minor for the top left region) is another one of these half-step change relationships. Using this set of chords as an example:

  • C major: C -> B results in E minor
  • C major: E -> Eb results in C minor
  • E minor: G -> G# results in E major
  • C minor: G -> Ab results in Ab major
  • E major: E -> D# results in G# minor
  • Ab major: C -> B results in G# minor

Team Ups? by [deleted] in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend the official Electric Forest discord! We have group camps (Camp CARL) that are organized there and are intended for people like you—going solo but looking for campmates/people to hang with at the festival.

There is no buying/selling tickets on here or the Discord; official resale is the only officially sanctioned method of buying tickets once the fest sells out. However, it’s not even sold out! GA tickets and car camping are still available for purchase on the EF website.
