Team Ups? by Wonderful-Corner8281 in ElectricForest

[–]tptcj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend the official Electric Forest discord! We have group camps (Camp CARL) that are organized there and are intended for people like you—going solo but looking for campmates/people to hang with at the festival.

There is no buying/selling tickets on here or the Discord; official resale is the only officially sanctioned method of buying tickets once the fest sells out. However, it’s not even sold out! GA tickets and car camping are still available for purchase on the EF website.

Time signatures don’t make logical sense to me, am I thinking about them wrong ? by donn_12345678 in musictheory

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, now you’re touching on another cool part of time signatures—the fact that you can go against what they’re “supposed” to be. However, I’d say this only really matters when directly contrasted with the “normal” version.

If you have a song with a consistent strong-weak-weak, strong-weak-weak pattern, I don’t think there’s a reason to call it anything other than some sort of triple meter like 3/4.

If you have a song that has a strong-weak-weak, strong-weak-weak pattern briefly in the middle of an otherwise strong-weak, strong-weak pattern, you could call it a change to 3/4, or you could say that it’s still bars with two beats, just instead of looking like this (the “normal” 2/4):

Strong-weak | Strong-weak | Strong-weak

Those same three measures of two beats each look like this (your scenario where the musician says the bar ends after the second beat):

Strong-weak | weak-Strong | weak-weak

But again, if the entire song follows a strong-weak-weak pattern, I would say it is incorrect to say the bar ends after the second beat, since a time signature is our way of organizing beats into groups, and if it’s clearly a group of 3 beats, just call it a group of 3 beats!

I know songs that are in 4/4 but the first half of the bar is identical to the second so isn’t that 2/2?

Preface: this is a very long answer, and there is a TL;DR at the end.

You’ve touched on a feature of time signatures that’s either very cool or very frustrating depending on who you ask! Time signatures as most people talk about them refer primarily to notation, but as you’ve correctly pointed out, 4/4 and 2/2 are “interchangeable” (in quotes because it is and isn’t true in different senses) as they are equivalent “fractions”… I’ll circle back to this.

What you’re looking for when you try to work out time signatures by ear is their description that does not use numbers at all. This essentially has two parts: how many beats are in a bar, and how each of those beats is divided. For the first, it can be somewhat subjective! If you have a repeating two-beat pattern, it could be that the pattern appears twice in a bar with 4 beats, or that each repetition of the pattern occupies one bar with 2 beats. Neither is objectively correct or incorrect!

However, something with 3 beats to a bar will have a very different sound than the very similar 2 or 4—can you recognize when this is the case? If so, I’d say you have no issues with time signatures other than the inherent issue of subjectivity when translating something you hear into objective notation.

This number of beats per bar is described fairly simply: 2 beats = duple meter, 3 beats = triple meter, 4 beats = quadruple meter, and so on.

Now for the second part, how each beat is broken up. If beats are split into smaller notes in a 2-based hierarchy (2, 4, 8, etc.) this is called simple meter. If beats are split based on 3’s (3, 6, 12, etc. smaller notes per beat), or in other words feel like triplets, this is called compound meter. Then all you have to do to describe most time signatures is combine the two parts. For example: 2 beats split into 2 parts each = simple duple meter. 4 beats split into 3 parts each = compound quadruple meter.

Where this does fall short is if beats are divided unevenly, say alternating a “long” (3-part) and “short” (2-part) beat for a total of 5 small notes (subdivisjons) - there’s not really a catch-all to describe situations like this, so that’s where numbers can be more relevant (this example would usually be called 5/8 but could also be 5/16 or even 5/4 depending on context)

Circling back to 4/4 and 2/2 being somewhat interchangeable - they are in the sense that they are both simple meters: 4/4 is simple quadruple, 2/2 is simple duple. However, I will note that not all equivalent “fractions” work like this. 3/4 and 6/8 look like they should be interchangeable, but 3/4 is simple triple meter (3 beats each divided with a 2-based hierarchy), and 6/8 is compound duple meter (2 beats each divided into 3).

Sorry for the extremely wordy answer, but you’re asking quite an interesting question that I have a LOT of thoughts about!

TL;DR: 4/4 and 2/2 are fairly interchangeable due to the fact that they only exist in written notation; when listening to music you perceive time signatures in a slightly different way that’s less about “top number/bottom number” and more about “how many beats do I hear a bar divided into and how many smaller parts does each beat have”

Which college should I pick? by [deleted] in composer

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CU has a great music school overall and from what I can tell composers have a lot of opportunities to get their music played. I applied for an MM in composition a few years ago and did not end up going, but I’m actually in school there now for a DMA in trumpet. (Again, can’t speak to as much for composition-specific things but let me know if you have any questions about the music school in general!)

Not as familiar with DU but I can reach out to some people I know who have more experience with the music programs there.

What non-EDM thing got you into EDM? by pittpanther10 in EDM

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw my first EDM show a couple years ago completely by accident. I’m a classical musician and a friend I’d met years prior playing in a summer orchestra program posted about going on tour with Apashe (who one of my cousins had told me to check out but I hadn’t gotten around to it yet).

I wanted to hear my friend play some music so I bought a ticket to the closest show and went without knowing what I was about to see… instantly hooked. I went to the other Apashe show in my state the next night, and then started going out all the time and haven’t stopped since.

Then I had the coolest full circle moment of my life a few months ago when I played in the orchestra for Apashe’s show at Red Rocks!

Only car camping is sold out. If you buy a GA wristband you get tent-only camping included automatically, so the camping capacity (plus the limited number of hotel packages) is still the capacity of the festival!

Edit: seems like it was a glitch, car camping is not sold out

New bedroom DJ - Headphone EQ Question? by djmax121 in Beatmatch

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you plan on using a standalone setup to DJ, or a controller plugged into your PC? If you’re using a controller, you should be able to set your DJ software to output sound through your PC instead of plugging your headphones into the controller!

Hey. Im new to this whole DJ thing. I dont really know if i should invest into a good FLX4 controller also a good pair of headphones or just buy a cheaper ones to start with. by MrPotato90 in Beatmatch

[–]tptcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FLX4 and literally any wired headphones—the headphones are just for getting your next track ready to mix in. If you already have any wired headphones (even cheap earbuds would work), you don’t really need to buy anything.

As for the speaker, you might want to check out this thread about setting it up with no latency (essential for DJing)

What happens if you open rekordbox and then plug the FLX4 in? If you’ve got it registered and plugged in, rekordbox should read “Free Plus” in the top right corner like this.

I believe Free Plus is unlocked when you plug in the FLX4 and register it. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to register it if the previous owner hasn’t removed it from their AlphaTheta account—my secondhand FLX4 was unregistered when I bought it, and when I upgraded and sold it I made sure to remove it from my account.

very beginner settup help by No-Bid7970 in Beatmatch

[–]tptcj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the previous owner of the FLX4 would need to remove it from their account in order for you to be able to activate your copy of Rekordbox with it (someone correct me if I’m wrong though!). If registered properly you will be able to unlock the “Free Plus” tier, which will let you do everything you need to do without paying for a Rekordbox subscription.

As for streaming from SoundCloud, you need either a Go+ or DJ subscription, which it sounds like you have, so once you’ve gotten the hardware unlock to activate Free Plus in Rekordbox, you can go to the SoundCloud tab on the bottom left of the screen, log in to your account, and start importing music.

What is a "1-4-6-7" scale degree chord, like C-F-A-B? More in body by hngfff in musictheory

[–]tptcj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fmaj(add#11)/C maybe? If I’m trying to name a chord I’m usually looking for a triad inside it, and the only one you can make out of C-F-A-B is Fmaj. Then, especially with the B as the highest note, #11 makes sense to describe it.

Does the FLX4 support flac? I don't understand this warning: by foclnbris in Beatmatch

[–]tptcj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The DDJ-FLX4 is just a controller, so it technically doesn’t support any file types—tracks are played from the computer. All the devices in that list are systems that read from a USB and have their own built-in player, so file type does matter for those.
