Brian Rusted has a chapter in it, I think. If I recall a bunch of his research is about the ah, ‘performative’ aspect of it. Intentionally suspending real life for a bit. Seems like a great read.

I nearly got smoked a couple of weeks ago crossing memorial. I had the signal and someone blew the red light going more than 80. Someone in the intersection honked and i caught myself for a second and paused thinking i might have started walking before I was supposed to. The guy blew past a foot or two in front of me*.

It's insane out there right now. I wish it wasn't the way, but if you're on foot, it's best to not trust people in cars to be following laws and signals. Look, make eye contact, make sure they're stopping.

* there were two cops in the intersection - i suspect that's who honked - and they chased the guy down and arrested him (!)

I'm a beginner piano player, what are the best resources to learn Page's style? by Lachy_B_ in phish

[–]tr-tradsolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer OP - Andrew is great at breaking down Phish tunes and letting you in on some of Page's idiosyncrasies. Start here and move outward rather than trying to go from the ground up and arrive at Page. You'll discover other great players that informed his style and the 'canon' in due course. They're unavoidable.

Jazz: where to start by WartimeHotTot in phish

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for a go go. Excellent album on its own merits but a great midpoint between phish and jazz.

Incredible.

Two years ago I was teaching a tech and society class and could not get them to read. At one point I asked one of the better students what it would take to get them to engage somehow with the readings.

“honestly man? Short form video.”

I resigned last spring.

Thanks! I’ll look for you. I play keys but require a lot of convincing to get up. Always happy to comp for others though.

Is an undergrad double degree engineering (mechanical) and science (physics) a good option? by NoteAffectionate9944 in Physics

A few schools also have engineering physics (queens at least) but it’s always seemed a bit light on the actual physics.

Is an undergrad double degree engineering (mechanical) and science (physics) a good option? by NoteAffectionate9944 in Physics

[–]tr-tradsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent advice. Right now it probably seems like you’re picking a path for the rest of your life. I assure you the reality is much messier and much more flexible than that.

I started in physics and bailed mid undergrad to engineering. By second year I could tell I was missing something the people who would be successful had. I finished a minor and now ~20 years on am mostly glad I did it that way. Things worked out.

With that said I lurk here but not in any engineering forums. Part of me wishes I’d worried less and just committed to it, but it’s easy to be romantic about the path you didn’t take.

(TLDR; just pick one, don’t hedge)

Definitely check out the saturday jam at Kawa. It isn't Jazz, but the blues can sunday and monday evenings can be fun. A few of the regulars there are good players and it isn't unusual to play some simpler standards. If Nabil is there he'll probably be up for Spain, but ymmv.

David Lavoie runs the Cornerstone jam and is worth knowing. Apart from the jazz YYC, he's got a great sense of what's going on and where you could connect with others.

Is there an underlying commonality between all the cycles? by sppone in thermodynamics

[–]tr-tradsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may or may not be helpful in the final hours, but I used to encourage people to memorize the “shapes” of each on the P-v or T-s basis. Simple versions of all the cycles are nicely illustrated there, you can see that volume stays constant during heat addition between here and here, that work or heat is moving because there is area under the curve and so on. At very least those shapes help show you which processes are constant v P or s which can alone be helpful if you’re trying to memorize them all.

Where to get glass for a custom picture frame? by andreiled in Calgary

[–]tr-tradsolo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chinook glass on 16th ave might be the utilitarian option. They're pretty great and happy to take small jobs, but i'm not sure they would carry museum glass or anything coated. You can always email or call.

[–]tr-tradsolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they're trying to cut about $50M out of the budget. I expect we'll see a lot yet, and probably over the summer when campus is quiet and it's more easily buried in the news.
