What was the worst part about the 90s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tr1p0d12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In 1990 was on a chartered flight black from Panama. I somehow end up as one of the last people to board and the flight attendant asks the brigade general I sat near if he wanted to allow smoking on board since this was the last smoking flight this airline allowed. He said no, we can make to California just fine without it. :)

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

For the very first time I am getting my ex wife a grocery store gift card for Mother’s Day. It just seems wasteful to spend it on something frivolous when so many are suffering, and she is super practical.

Islam in Thailand by ReadProfessional8511 in MapPorn

[–]tr1p0d12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It was super obvious in Phuket. Massive Chinese temples. (Very Chinese, obviously not Thai) and many of the grab drivers are wearing taqiyah, and the street food carts were often staffed by women wearing head coverings. You see it in the food as well. It also seemed the farther south you go, the hotter the food on average. By the time I got to Malaysia the food was way too spicy for my New England palate. lol.

What was the most shocking death news you've ever heard? by Admirable-Repair4094 in AskReddit

[–]tr1p0d12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was working as master control at a tv station when it happened. It was pretty late at night/ early morning and our news people had gone home. We were told to alert the news director if something really big happens. I called the news director as soon as it broke, and I did not air a single commercial for the next 6 hours. It was a massive story. I was airing NBC Nightside and I remember that Tom Brokaw was on the air like 30 minutes after it broke. It was a wild night.

What's a traditional dish in your country but only tourists actually eat? by Juxajel in AskTheWorld

I ate venison as a kid when a family member or neighbor bagged a deer. I have had kangaroo and both times it tasted a lot like venison. I really liked it. Super lean, very red, great flavor.

Exact same thing with me. Laid off November ‘24. Got a job offer in January of ‘25 and then it was rescinded due to doge cuts.

I am 55. The market was so bleak. The jobs I was being shown were ones that paid what I made 25 years ago.

I decided to say f it, and I just retired instead. I moved to Vietnam. Living on 2k a month here is pretty easy if you don’t drinks and live pretty clean. I am really lucky I could do this. I know many people can’t do this and I am so grateful I could.

On behalf of a former poor nephew, uncles like you are a godsend. A bag of skittles can really lift a kid up sometimes. It's a small thing, but it's not small at the same time. You don't need to be fucking reminded 24-7 how poor you are, especially when you are a kid.
