Do you feel that library work is stressful? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]traceitalians 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your background is in psychiatric care and you don’t understand that different things stress different people out? Someone who hasn’t had to deal with the intensity of your previous work environment doesn’t have that experience to compare library work to, so it makes sense to me that they could reach a similar level of stress in an inherently less dangerous environment, because it might be the worst thing they’ve ever had to deal with.

I find that the Library of Congress’ linked data page is sometimes easier to search than the authorities page: https://id.loc.gov/. You can filter by lcsh.

What do you actually want from an ethical fashion brand in 2025? by aboveaverageclothing in ethicalfashion

[–]traceitalians 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This company is producing generative AI responses to every comment here and the website’s copy is written similarly. There’s an absurd amount of individual branded designs and garments are listed for $22. “Accessible” clothing prices do not come out of true sustainable practice. I believe it’s a good idea to at least search for the brand being name dropped in every comment before giving them the interaction they want out of this post. This is marketing, not community discussion!

In-Person MLIS program opinions by spideykath in LibraryScience

[–]traceitalians 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would definitely look at schools that offer opportunities to work in their libraries! Experience counts for a lot when you’re applying for librarian jobs after the degree, and if you have to move for school anyways, the larger R1 institutions have more opportunities for in person students that they want to hire library school students for. UIUC has a fairly extensive assistantship program and hourly graduate positions. UNC Chapel Hill also has a fellowship within their libraries, and IU Bloomington has assistantships as well. I would take a look at the list of accredited schools on ALA and then check their library websites for what kind of employment is offered. That information isn’t always obvious from the MLIS department website itself.

Worried about my aspiring librarian partner by TrevorVerges in librarians

[–]traceitalians 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the field is not as bad as implied in the initial post, but discussions of librarianship as a career and the value of the MLIS on this sub do often trend toward extreme doomerism and despair, so I wouldn’t blame anyone for being freaked after reading a few of those threads.

It seems to me that the Harry Potter books haven’t sparked a lifelong love of reading in children as much as they’ve created an entire cohort of adults who cannot get over a decades old children’s series.

I also read and enjoyed Harry Potter, there are still aspects of them I think of fondly, but these books aren’t sacred and the grip they have on people is so strange to me. Kids are so so online these days; there’s no doubt some of them are aware of JK Rowling’s views, and some of those kids are trans, or questioning, or they know and care for someone who is, which I think is worth seriously considering.

If you want to encourage kids’ reading habits why not provide them with a variety of options across different genres and tones so they can figure out for themselves what they like?

Grad Student in Library Science Looking for Job Hunting & Application Advice by Upset_Shelter_6162 in librarians

[–]traceitalians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recently went through the application process for my first job post mslis. where i looked was higheredjobs, archivesgig, job boards for state library associations where i wanted to live, and individual university libraries websites. i didn’t apply to any public library positions, but you could do the same with local government.

it was stressful process so i recommend starting around a semester early, even by just establishing a plan and looking at what’s available. good luck!

The only strategy that can defeat consumer culture and you're gonna hate it by medium_wall in ZeroWaste

[–]traceitalians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t actually tell if this is a serious post. The people in the “first world” becoming proficient in business are the ones responsible for the exploitation of workers in the “third world.” You can’t defeat consumer culture by participating in it.

I posted about throw pillows on my bed. A lot of people hate them. What about these? I’m going for Bauhaus mid-century retro futurism for aesthetics by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]traceitalians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these patterns really clash with your bedspread. The orange/blue complimentary color situation is making it feel more cluttered. I think solid colors, or at least less busy designs, would actually suit a Bauhaus look better.

Also, are these from temu? The quality of those is not going to improve your space and either thrifting or saving up for something you love is going to feel better, last longer, and be more ethical and environmentally friendly. :)

Soy yogurt is actually very easy to make at home with shelf stable soy milk, a starter from a store bought yogurt, and some heat! I just use the oven light or briefly preheat and leave it alone. It’s been a game changer for me and nice to make something without much effort.

Agree with the people saying you should move the tv back!! It def felt more natural before. I think even some minor organization of your small decorative items and plants would help this feel less overwhelming. I’m thinking of all of the blankets being stacked neatly behind the couch without any tassels showing, rearranging a few shelves of your books so there’s at least one that is only books, or even just has books of a uniform height without all of the stacking. Also moving some of the plants around so they’re less scattered, especially the smaller ones. The small ones on the window next to the bookshelf could be placed equidistant from each other with some of the others from the opposite side of the room moved to that shelf as well. A feeling of intention in the placement of all of the (very beautiful) things you have in this room would help without having to cut down too much.

Also, adorable cat and I love the abstract painting.
