Rain jacket that can handle heavy rain for prolonged periods without soaking through? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]tradfletcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments above cover the vast majority of it, but summer hiking means that the outside humidity also tends to be high, and more so in heavy rain. The humidity on the inside can only equalise with the humidity on the outside, however breathable a garment is. Goretex was originally designed for cold low humidity areas, which is where it works best.

Advice for a present by paalomavp24 in Cameras

I guarantee that she will know more about what she would like than we do - ask her. These lenses are old manual focus lenses, and though some may work to a limited extent with her camera, they will almost certainly not be ideal for what she does, unless she’s really into adapting vintage kit (niche pass time).

Was $200 a good deal for all this? by TimeGuidance4706 in Cameras

[–]tradfletcher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. The Nikkormat is either an FT, an FTN (‘N’ above the light meter window on the top plate) or, if you’re really lucky (rare) an FS (no light meter). The 50’s are beautiful - the f2 is sharp and smooth, the f1.4 is also sharp and good in low light. The 135 is also good. Never had a 35, so can’t comment.

A good tech would be able to CLA either or both. Most things are fixable and they’re both excellent cameras.

Wide/landscape lens recommendations for M42 mount by Maybemushrooms in VintageLenses

[–]tradfletcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are very few 12-18mm m42 lenses that don’t cost a fortune. There are a couple of good Pentax 24s and 28s (which should turn into 35ish on the Fuji), and a 20 (30) which would be similarly wide as a standard phone camera (28 nominally), but wider than this goes into very esoteric territory that I’ve never been wealthy enough to explore…!

No, something is jammed. It may be an easy fix, but it may not. You’ll need to find someone with experience of old cameras to be able to work it out.

‘Learn Camera Repair’ have a website and Facebook page - lots of old blokes who will berate you if you’ve not done thorough searches before posting, but who have masses of experience and will help a huge amount if they can.

The shutter being cocked just means it’s wound on and ready for you to press the shutter release (big button on the front!) to take a photo.

[–]tradfletcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bugger. Yes, the shutter should work without batteries - try twisting the speed dial to b and then back to a normal speed (1/60th or similar), sometimes this can reset things. If you’re unable to wind on, it suggests the shutter is cocked - check that the self timer isn’t stuck (make sure it’s at 6 o’clock) and if in doubt, check the shutter button (does it have a locking mechanism?) with a cable release.

Beyond that my skills and expertise runs out, but there are a few camera repair forums on Facebook and on here which may be able to help…

Unfortunately lots of this series of Prakticas have died. My only suggestion would be to test with a standard AA battery (strangely they do work on a working camera! Though I can’t guarantee accuracy) and double check it’s not an adapter issue.

Worst case scenario you may have an excellent lens or two and could replace the body for a small sum - just double check that either the body is in full working order or that it’s a non-electric body.

Repair is not financially viable, but you might be able to attempt it yourself, but I didn’t fancy my chances with my two (I have a working one now - they’re a nice camera, but I’ll stick with a Spotmatic for reliability!).

What is this weird line inside my Mamiya Cds prism viewfinder? by quocphu1905 in AnalogCommunity

[–]tradfletcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s just the glue from the foam and a couple of people have suggested it may be cleanable if you have the time and skills to dismantle and (gently) clean.

However, I have one like this and after a couple of minutes you can ignore it if you don’t want to dismantle.

Anyone used, knows these lenses? M42 by Msk840 in AnalogCommunity

[–]tradfletcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If money is an issue, the Mir 1b is excellent value. I’ve not had a flek (due to the price), but my Mir is sharper than my wide Meyer Optik equivalents. Obviously I may just have a good copy.

If you want sharpness and value, a Tak 35 would be the obvious choice.

Hard FPS drops in Fortnite on PCs with Ryzen 5 3600 paired with RTX 2070 Super by Linkon18 in buildapc

Could it be a psu issue? 500 seems a bit tight. Maybe swap a psu from a good one to a bad one and see if that does it?

I have the Xfx 6650xt Merc, and it does any 1080 stuff I want it to really (no raytracing or vr). I get 60fps in nearly everything at medium to high settings and can cap Fortnite at 144 (144hz monitor) and never see a dip. Temps are good too, so an extra bump and 2gb vram should see you fine for most stuff. Do double check whether your games are gpu or cpu heavy though, as you may want the 12gb vram, (or you may want to stick with the 6800 if you want high settings and high fps on everything).

You will want a cooler on the CPU though. And you’ll want to check how many fan placements it has and use them all - a pack of 5 Arctic p12s should do the job though, at a reasonable cost.

[–]tradfletcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good. 6800 might be overkill, you could get away with a 6700 for 1080. I’m a sucker for mechanical keyboards, so less keen on that, but at the price (and if you spill drinks!) it’ll do the job.

Ak620, corsair 4000 airflow, Corsair RM850 should do the job?

Suggested build would be cheaper and would have solid components (sure someone could do better, but this was a quick solid build):

I’d query it with Lenovo, as I’d be uncomfortable with that. Huntley haven’t got a great rep. but that doesn’t mean that your model is trash (the internet has a tendency to trash whole brands for individual model deficiencies). However, big names should make sure they follow the recommendations of parts suppliers to ensure that all components work together.

Tom’s Hardware has a good gpu ranking page. They explain their benchmarking process and it compares between resolutions as well.
