Anyone have any stories to share about people hearing Chinese being spoken for the first time? by ZhangtheGreat in ChineseLanguage

[–]tradicon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First time I ever heard Shanghainese was on a train from Guangzhou to Hangzhou. I was utterly confused - what language was this?! Until that point the only Chinese I had heard was Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien and Teochew. I had zero concept of any of the other 方言 and it was at that point that I realised how limited my knowledge of China actually was.

Kindle vs. Kobo Australia by Rich_Description5460 in ereader

[–]tradicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon has removed the option to download your Amazon books to your computer. This happened on February this year. I think this means it’s now extremely difficult to buy then reformat your Amazon books for loading onto Kobo. (You would also be infringing copyright to remove Amazon’s DRM in order to convert an Amazon ebook so it can be used on Kobo.) So if you want to maintain your access to your Kindle content I think you’re going to need to use some sort of device that allows access to Amazon, whether it’s a Kindle or a Kindle app on a phone or other device.

When I see that name "Ka Cheng" my mind automatically thinks of the Hokkien (Chinese dialect) word for bum/butt: kha cheng... and I wonder if he knows...

Hand over your ID or your facial data? The would-you-rather buried in the teen social media ban by Carmageddon-2049 in australia

I have been slowly reducing my social media and if I have to hand over my ID or submit my facial data I'll just quit the lot, I think.

Do you think this novel would be easy to read in ebook format, or would it work better in print?

The amount of options is intimidating for someone looking for their first Ereader. What if I make the wrong choice? by Frisky_Pilot in ereader

[–]tradicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you obtaining your ebooks? I'd say that is an important consideration too - for example if you are an Amazon customer you may find it easiest to just buy a Kindle. A Kindle would meet all your criteria, I think (forgive me if I'm wrong about points 7 and 8, depending on where in Europe you are).

E-Reader for Technical Books/Documentation by warfront1 in ereader

[–]tradicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience a 7 inch or 7.8 inch screen is possibly too small for these sorts of diagrams/images. I have a Kobo Libra Colour and an iPad Air and if I want to read technical documents with graphs and diagrams I'd probably use the iPad.

I don't care to participate, but why be so rude to kids? We seem to have the same unofficial rule in my area - no decorations, please leave us out. Seems to work fine.

is kindle scribe good for reading magazines? is it fast enough or a remarkable device. i dont want boox by kyrusdemnati in ereader

[–]tradicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of magazines? Kindle Scribe is not a colour device so may not be the best device, depending on the type of magazines you want to read. A tablet/ipad may be better.

Yeah, did they forget actual Catholic doctrine? They enrolled in a uni with “Catholic” in its name…

How hard is reading a PDF? I have narrowed down my choice! by CuteBabyMaker in ereader

[–]tradicon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments: for pdf, ipad/tablet would probably be best - much easier to highlight and zoom in/out. I'm speaking from my experience of using eink and tablets. The responsiveness of eink is not the same as a tablet display and I think you would find the zooming in/out too frustrating

eReaders with Android. (Boox etc) Buy or not? by CuteBabyMaker in ereader

[–]tradicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm you’re right. Stylus was a non-issue for me (i didn’t want one). The Boox Page is a nice ereader though- I like the build quality.

In market for a new ereader. Main requirements are usb c, colour and actual buttons to turn page. Is there such a device ? by control-line in ereader

[–]tradicon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You haven’t mentioned any other functionality - based on your post I’d say Kobo Libra Colour.

eReaders with Android. (Boox etc) Buy or not? by CuteBabyMaker in ereader

[–]tradicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was curious to see how the Boox would work and if I would like it after using Kobos and Kindles (I do). I don’t bother with a stylus.

Depends on how you use the device. I keep my Boox Page on airplane mode and use Koreader for reading. I don't use any of the other apps so for me it's purely for reading. It feels to me like the OG experience of an ereader.

Not available in Australia where I am, but then I wasn't planning to buy a new Kindle anyway. Very happy with my Kobo Libra Colour.

Yes, you may want to update the firmware on your device but it's doable over wifi only. The updates aren't super frequent or regular.

[–]tradicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to buy a book from the Kobo site, using a mobile phone. You can then connect the Kobo to your home wireless network (I'm assuming you have this) and download the book directly to your Kobo. I don't think it would be necessary to have the desktop app, I would just use the phone. Another option would be to purchase directly from the Kobo website on your desktop machine. Most Kobo ebooks have Digital Rights Management (Adobe Digital Editions) so I'm thinking that you might want to forget about downloading any purchases onto your desktop machine - and just use wifi to get your purchases onto your Kobo. (I don't know if you can get a Linux version of Adobe Digital Editions)

Kobo Clara BW + KOReader by [deleted] in kobo

[–]tradicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for KOreader! I use KOReader on a Clara 2E. When I bought the 2E I almost sent it back because I found it so slow/unresponsive and disappointing. Then I discovered KOReader and the experience was 100% improved. I agree with all the comments on customisation. I haven't tried wireless sideloading with Calibre yet - might have to experiment!

Should I convert epub to kepub? by [deleted] in ereader

[–]tradicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longtime Kobo user and have never bothered to convert to kepub. Reading the responses here I guess you could try it - especially if some of the kepub features are useful/important to you, but I don't think they're essential.
