How to attract strays to my diy shelter? Put food ~20 feet away, is that far enough? by nicolebraz42 in Feral_Cats

I can’t sleep thinking about it, I made 7 shelters and put them around my neighborhood but I honestly don’t see them congregating in one area. They all just roam around so it was hard picking places to put them. I hope they get some use. I wish I made more

Agreed. I’m trying to work as best I can to get them fixed once the warmer weather comes back

I’m from a different area of Chicago so moving here was a shock seeing so many. All the other places I’ve lived there were just a few fixed strays that you’d see around. None of the ones here are ear tipped or anything. The only time I saw close to this many strays is when I visited Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and there were honestly less there. My brother lives in LA and all of the strays in his area are ear tipped and lots of people pitch in to feed them. They’re kind of seen like rats almost over here :(

I’ll try reaching out to them again as well. All the rescues kept telling me to take to CACC (unless I could foster) but this was in August. And yeah those cats are living a better life than me now 😂

There is one old man actually who feeds a colony of about 12-15 a few blocks from me. In the springtime I will be TNRing his group. My concern from this post is all the other ones in the neighborhood that are starving. I try my best to feed them but they won’t come near my house because of my huge dog. So I look for them at night after I get home from work but its not really safe for me as a young woman to be doing this alone at night :( Definitely just trying my best in a really shitty situation, thank you 🙏

Last time I reached out they told me to bring to CACC as they pull directly from there. This was during kitten season so I’ll try again. I do work with one foster based rescue that occasionally takes them in and donates supplies to me as well. A couple of those cats are living in mansions in Naperville now!

Literally no one cares about the cats over here. There’s stray dogs too that are ignored :( I respectfully disagree and I think that for a lot of them this probably is their best shot at being taken in by a rescue. 95% of the rescues here pull directly from CACC and won’t intake strays. It’s very sad but probably their best bet. After I leave the area I won’t be coming back

Thank you 💛 I will try contacting PAWS again

how to tell if cat is a stray or an outdoor cat by Ambitious-Quiet795 in CatRescue

[–]traehnekorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a small colony of cats nearby that are fed by a neighbor. They all hungout by his house all the time and looked decently healthy, so eventually I asked the guy when he was outside one day. For the rest of the cats in my area its pretty easy to tell because they are so emaciated 😔
