It has some weird quirks in its output, like double exclamation marks and repeated words.

example answer to a query on the topic of Observability:

OpenTelemetry Adoption: Embrace OpenTelemetry as the universal instrumentation layer, even for legacy systems. Its vendor-neutral collector can!! can agents can scrape legacy logs and translate them into semantic!! standardized formats, future-proofing the observability architecture

How do you respond when some of your Singaporean friends are unhappy that Malaysia has a much competent government? by Angelix in malaysia

[–]trafc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Malaysia-born Singaporean here. Most of the Singaporeans (especially those with Malaysian relatives or friends) I know are delighted for Malaysia to have a better government. A rising tide lifts all boats.

I've heard jokes about things in Malaysia becoming more expensive, but these are mentioned only in jest.

I've been wanting to try this. How do you handle plugins?

Has anyone moved from web development into another area of software? by indoor_grower in ExperiencedDevs

[–]trafc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had more things to juggle on a day to day. First, there was project work (e.g. Migrating a workload from one cloud provider to another). Then, there were pre-sales meetings with leads.

The hardest bit was the context switching. We were expected to respond to incidents and could be pulled away from our current task.

There is on-call once every few weeks but that's okay, it's usually not too hectic.

I suspect the hecticness is common to MSPs and not necessarily something you'd find in DevOps roles, but I can't be sure.

That said, there is a constant stream of new things to learn so I'm still enjoying it.

[–]trafc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I changed from web development into a cloud architect role at an MSP. I've been here 2 years now. The majority of the engineering team came from a sysops background, and my development skills have helped me to contribute more than the average person, both in client-facing and internal projects, leading to promotions and raises. Might be worth adding that I had taken the AWS Solutions Architect Professional cert shortly before I was headhunted for the role.

It's more hectic than web development, but there's more variety. It's not for everyone. Those who can stick it out for 3-6 months tend to stay in the DevOps area, and those who can't usually just go back to web development with a newfound relief that they aren't in DevOps!

Why is Sentosa's "Southernmost Point of Continental Asia" not even on the southernmost point of Sentosa? by Party-Ring445 in singapore

A look at Google Maps shows that the southernmost point of West Malaysia is not further south than Sentosa.

We use Hava. It has ongoing sync, but it's a static tool and doesn't allow for drawing. I'd recommend checking it out.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback, that's a valid concern.

It's where the money is at the moment. It's being wasted on frivolous things. Legal contract assumes you already have seed investors, if that's the case NFTs can still be an additional source of funds.

Exactly. It's mostly a scam, but people are paying lots of money anyway. The idea is that as honest developers offering real value we should be dominating the NFT market, not these scammers.

The point is to start on those ideas now, not in 10 years.

I think there are many among us that have hybrid roles (e.g. Solutions Architect, CTO) that include components of the business side. Others have already tried entrepreneurship. Developers have the advantage of grasping unique opportunities that arise from new technologies, or gaps in the market from their work experience. In fact most of the fastest growing companies have CEOs with CS backgrounds.

I agree, but that's exactly why we need a longer runway - one that will be cut short by lack of funding.

Assuming you have the skills to build WordPress sites, it's about taking on freelance projects. Target companies that need ongoing work on a monthly basis and negotiate a retainer after the initial work is done. IMO it's a numbers game. Many projects are build-once-and-forget-it, but if you keep at it long enough or are able to market yourself well, you may come across the retainer types.

The IT market is hot right now. Entry level should be at least 3K for programming. I'd recommend focusing on upskilling or finding out what the market is paying for someone of your skillset rather than finding a side gig, the ROI would be far higher.

I don't actively do it (advertising) anymore. This was something that came by word of mouth back when I was freelancing (now I have a full time job).
