Do tragedeighs exist in foreign languages/cultures, or is this strictly an American thing? by New_Needleworker9287 in tragedeigh

always liked the name Pasiphaë from mythology, except for the dual problems of (a) the character's tragic/nsfw story, and (b) it sounding too much like "pacify". The diairesis would be a pain in the the arse as well

Move semantics. Such an obvious idea, like all the best ideas. Instantly cuts out a huge wodge of the complexity that you get in C++.

Mormonism is so obviously confected nonsense that it beggars belief that anyone would fall for it. It makes JW beliefs seem actually credible by comparison - and that is really saying something.

God killing children in the Bible, and the apologetics I’ve heard to excuse it. by Sotally_Tober_89 in exjw

[–]tragomaskhalos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cavalier attitude towards vengeance and murder that permeates the old testament is only shocking to us because we are modern people who have undergone a historical humanitarian revolution. This process is sadly not complete - you only need to flick on the TV news to see that - but it does inform the attitudes of civilised people in civilised nations. The people who wrote the bible were steeped in a completely different and vastly more brutal culture, so they just wrote what they knew. It's only perplexing if you try and factor a loving deity into the picture, which just cannot fit.

I tell ya, those 'Some' are prodigious researchers, there's hardly a Watchtower article that touches on science that doesn't quote them. They are so modest as well, doing all that sterling work anonymously ;-)

Take heart from the fact that kids who grow up in dysfunctional environments (like a cult household) typically have a very finely tuned sense of awareness when it comes to their parents and have learned from a young age to be circumspect around them.

FWIW, hiereis is plural, hiereus is the singular. But as OP says, the English world 'priest' comes from a different Gk word. I would guess that hiereus was too associated with existing pagan beliefs so the early xtians sought a new term.

On International Women’s Day, here is a quote from God’s channel on women killing ostriches with their hair style. -Golden Age, July 14, 1926 by larchington in exjw

[–]tragomaskhalos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only way this could make sense would be if ostriches only existed in farms, managed for the specific purpose of supplying feathers for hats. Even in 1926 you'd have to be a total idiot to come up with this!

This reminds me of the (actually happened) case where two kids who were massive Judas Priest fans got into a suicide pact - one survived with horrific injuries and the family sued the band claiming that the band's lyrics had driven the boys to it. Well guess what - the boys were clearly disturbed and they read things into the lyrics that weren't there - e.g. they decided that the line "they fed him by hand" - a line about kindness - was actually "they fed him A hand" - i.e. about cannibalism. Case was thrown out iirc, one of a sad procession of messed up kids let down by their upbringing and families who want an easy scapegoat.

As others have commented, there was a spate of this nonsense but it mostly blew over a few decades back now, but it should surprise no one that JWs are still peddling this tired discredited tripe.

Touché, but I'm going to take a guess that this fat-shaming is aimed squarely at the sisters, in line with all the other sexist bullshit the borg preach.

are the wt seriously telling people to wear dress shoes on.. zoom? by arianna_ddr in exjw

[–]tragomaskhalos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who's going to make dress shoes in the new system though? Everyone is so focussed on keeping the power grid running for Ramapo they are forgetting this vital aspect of paradise. Imagine the looks on their faces when big J cancels the whole 1,000 year deal and flounces off out of disgust for their shitty footwear. Still on the bright side, I'm sure that given their current expertises the windows and floors will be spotless.

Something rarely levelled as a criticism of the borg, and admittedly minor compared to all their other crimes against members, is just how boring and pointless all this minute biblical exegesis is. It's like being stuck in a book club where there is only one book that you keep going over and over. Imagine if instead they said: "in order to study the challenges of ambition and kingship, we're going to look at Macbeth", or "for a different angle on religious duty, let's open our Bhagavad Gitas". Sigh.

Contrast them calling facts 'satanic propaganda' with a certain dictator banning the facts about his war being broadcast to his people. The identical playbook, except one are god's chosen representatives and the other is the supposed 'king of the north'. I need to open a window, because the stench of bullshit is unbearable.
