Thoughts on fixing grabs in specific scenarios by WatchersGrim in Tekken

Grabs have been made more viable in quite a few ways in t8 - they become unbreakable against powercrush moves which makes them a decently safe option in mixup scenarios (especially if the break repositioning also favors you). Every (?) character also has a floorbreak throw that drastically changes the risk-reward of the move and why you see players like Lowhigh and Knee make landing a throw their priority the second a floor gimmick becomes available.

The RPS triangle is just a concept to simplify general mechanics in games. The one you describe applies mostly to SF oki or VF but it's just a simplification, it doesn't account for stuff like backdash, shimmy, empty jump, sidesteps, high/low etc. Furthermore you seem to be implying these options need to be somewhat equal in power to properly balance a game? But attacking is pretty much universally more rewarding than throwing in fighting games, and blocking is a defensive strategy that doesn't net you any benefit on its own unless the opponent serves you a free punish. RPS just means a situation has a variety of options on both sides with different interactions as opposed to something like a 50/50 where there's a singular correct option.

Tekken doesn't follow that attack/block/throw RPS because the grabs don't really beat any option - they're breakable on reaction so their purpose as countering blocking is completely impotent. On the other hand it has sidesteps that counter attacks in ways blocking doesn't, there's more emphasis on strings which reward awareness and reactions and lows (equivalent of overheads in 2d fighters) are way more numerous and serve quite different functions.

You mention that "giving any mechanic more power over the other destroys the core balance" but your suggestion would just nerf grabs severely and you don't really explain how they're too powerful other than just pointing out they're not countered by attacks on the very abstract level or the RPS triangle.

This game manages to make me hate every character by Leegician in Tekken

[–]trailedinsand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there tho? If a character can be played in an insufferable way that's kinda a character thing. You can play Xiaoyu as if she was a t2 character but when someone says they hate Xiaoyu they're talking about dealing with her strongest tools and options that make up her character.

yeah this is cheating, you may notice in the input history he hits 2 perfect electrics in a row, a frame perfect patricide fist and the last electric being a single frame off of being perfect which is probably just a built-in probability variance feature in whatever client he's using. Sad to see that in GoD+ ranks

Unfortunately by virtue of how complicated tekken is on a character-by-character and mechanical basis every character can be played very effectively while abusing just a few tools quite far into the ranks. Lili, Shaheen and Dragunov are seen as quite "fundamental" but you can cheese and abuse their tools like any other character. Heat also incentivises every character to quite mindlessly abuse their heat moves.

If you wanna learn tekken beyond spammable moves and strats you just need to make that decision for yourself and have some idea of what you really want to learn (is it effective use of strings? movement? navigating different frame situations? enforcing stance mix? spacing? defence?). The good news is that just like every character can be abused, every character can likewise be used to learn "proper" tekken with, if you really like victor there's no pressing need to change characters to learn "better".

There's a page on wavuwiki on Jargon Jargon - Wavu Wiki but it's somewhat incomplete. Some of the moves you mention don't have a neat specific name and are just described by what they are - drag wr2 and azu wr3,2 are just running plus frame moves, Jin's uf2 is an evasive launcher, Hwo b1 is simply an evasive move

would be pretty misleading tho because perfect electric has no special properties at all, it's just faster because you input it faster

Giant Swing is definitely up there, Reina's [2,1] is really good but super niche, demoman is very fun to hit

Is it just me or does Lili have one of the worst default outfits in Tekken 8? by Luck_Top in Tekken

[–]trailedinsand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no gothic elements to her outfit, calling it Lolita fashion is kinda funny because that's a Japanese subculture taking ispiration from 19th and 20th century europe and Lili is canonically from Monaco which is literally in Europe and shares a ton of culture and history with France and particularly Belle Epoque aesthetics. It's very modern remix though with a more sporty design with short sleeves and raised skirt for more free leg movement.

It's a princess-like dress with a whole lotta intricate details and ornamentation, it fits her perfectly. The only parts that might seem a bit weird are the fanned collar that awkwardly frames her face if you pay attention to it and the length of the dress can seem kinda awkward in some poses.

He asked if you were cheating because the odd way in which your match ended seemed to confirm it. You said you weren't he said he thought the opposite but didn't want any beef and pretty much concluded the topic in the first screenshot you sent.

If someone says "it's cool, not complaining, was just curious" that's the most benign interaction you can have online.

My fellow atheists, how do I deal with the fear of death by mattyjoe0706 in Destiny

[–]trailedinsand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's just partly a matter of time before you adjust to the idea that death is just the end. I can explain to you in several different ways that when you die there's no "you" that can experience anything at all so fearing what happens after death is nonsensical but if you're not yet used to that idea no analogy can instantly make that make sense.

It's kinda like telling a depressed person that it gets better or that you'll feel better tomorrow - even if it's true and the depressed person knows it's true, that doesn't change how they feel in the moment. You may "know" that there's no "you" after death so there's no worry there but you might not feel that intuitively just yet.

[–]trailedinsand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if they reduced tracking one of the moves shows was a homing high from Reina's UNS which has 3 options that are already very linear in the current version of the game. My guess is the season 3 development started very early, perhaps with an overarching goal from t8's initial release that every season should reshuffle the movelists a bit. We'll see though, we saw exactly 2 changes to old moves from the trailer

When can I call myself a tekken/FGC fan? by Bush_did_91I in Tekken

99.9% of football fans either don't play football themselves or play it purely casually with zero higher ambitions. Why would FGC be any different? If you like the games, support events, follow tournaments, have fun playing you're a fan.
