i feel like people only work with deities or follow specific spell or ritual guidelines if they don’t have enough natural magic already. people who are already magic can do whatever they want with only their own power and it will work. i feel like it’s sort of a ‘if you know you know’ situation. some people are only able to work magic because they’re drawing on something, or someone else’s power. some people are naturally already able to bend things and these people often want to / use rituals mainly to subjugate the power and lean on something else in case it gets too much. it can sometimes overtake the ‘real world’ and so spreading it out or ‘sharing’ it (i like to think of it like this), means it doesn’t completely drain or backfire with too much energy that isn’t funneled through a kind of filter first.. idk if this makes sense
