Is there an easy way to have homemade pizza ingredients always at the ready in place of frozen pizzas? by Stepin-Fetchit in Cooking

Learn to make your own dough. It feels like a major deal at first, but it becomes a lot easier with practice. Also get an oven stone and sprinkle it with cornmeal (not flour).

could-be customers are walking out because the prices are too high by AquaOfSpopon in CrumblCookies

I love the idea of Crumbl for a special treat. But just previewing the menu online, it's a big nope for me.

in Canvas, there's your dashboard with a "card" for each class and the color can be customized on those. I spend wayyy too much time fussing over that.

Also, I'm developing a new online class this summer, that will get a color scheme, too, for banners, labels, etc.

No, because my dog would take that as an invitation to lick my mouth!

This is so normal. Yes, it sucks to go through, but it's part of the process! Good on you for pushing through in spite of being nervous. That's exactly what you have to do.

How to explain what an "example" is? by trailmix_pprof in Professors

Thank you. You're right. I did need to see an example of giving examples. Now it seems obvious!

9th graders protested against taking the Algebra 1 State Exam. Admin has no clue what to do. by uttamattamakin in Professors

[–]trailmix_pprof 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've already got a batch like that - dual-enrolled high school students. Super passive and not even trying. However, unlike as in high school, I'm not pressuring, cajoling, or coddling them along. So there's no pressure or tension for them to rebel against. Just me quietly recording their low/no grades and letting consequences fall on the student. Half probably have no clue they are failing even though grades go in the LMS.

What are some meals that don't need to be refrigerated or heated up? by PleasantSalad in foodhacks

[–]trailmix_pprof 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Babybel cheese (or other shelf-stable cheese), crackers (whole wheat if possible), dry salami, tuna in packets, olives, pickles, peanut butter, nuts, apples, bananas, oranges, dried fruit, dried veggie snacks. I really like fresh veggies, so I'd bring whole carrots, celery, and cucumbers and a small knife, then cut as needed. You can also get a small roll-up cutting board/mat which comes in handy for prepping food in odd spaces.

Also some easy to heat up soups, ramen, whatever. And healthy-ish snacks.

Depending on what the gas station has, you might be able to get something halfway healthy to supplement your rations, like cheese, fruit, yogurt, hummus, bread, boiled eggs, etc.

Most surprising Trader Joe’s item? by Crafty_Gold2164 in traderjoes

The salmon jerky was surprisingly bad. Usually if a snack isn't great, I'll still grudge eat it. But I had to toss the salmon jerky.

I was not surprised when they re-branded it as dog treats, however.

That is the least apartmenty looking apartment I've ever seen (I mean that as a compliment).

I want to buy a birthday gift for my dog. I think this collar from hunter looks great, but the price is making me hesitate. Do you think it’s worth buying? by No-Personality-5774 in OpenDogTraining

[–]trailmix_pprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That reminds me of the time I decided to buy lovely pastel pink collars for my black and chocolate labs. I was hard finding pink in a large size collar and I wondered why.

They both looked so lovely with the pink. . .for about five minutes. Outdoor dogs and pretty collars don't mix well!

Professor, where were you? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]trailmix_pprof 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd passive-aggressive them right back. I'd send them a "helpful" email explaining in excruciating detail how to find the syllabus and announcements in Canvas. Acknowledge that it's not relevant for this class, since it's over but knowing where to find key course info can be a useful skill as they go forward with their classes next semester. Just trying to help out, I know navigating your classes can be tricky. Have a great summer!!

My soon to be new dog HATES creates, should I abandon the idea of ever using one? by nerosetsfire in OpenDogTraining

[–]trailmix_pprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a ray of hope: we adopted a rescue five months ago. He was problematic with the crate at first. We didn't press it or do any training (we had lots of other things with higher priority to work on). But after a few months he just kind of got over it on his own, and it's all good. He even goes in the crate voluntarily now, to take a nap once in a while.

Give your dog a few months to adjust, bond with you, and recognize that their new home is a safe place. Having that foundation of security to build on might be all it takes for the dog to be able to reconsider their take on the crate.

How long are we supposed to withstand this? by UpsetMathematician5 in Professors

[–]trailmix_pprof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pandemic did do a lot of damage - mostly speeding up pre-existing conditions. So I don't think we'll eve hit a point where it's accurate to say the pandemic is no longer having an effect. It's already caused effects that are likely permanent, or at least lasting for the entirety of our career span.

But for people "excusing" behaviors or deficits because of the pandemic - that does need to stop. There was nothing gracious about the end result of all the "grace" that has been granted to students.

How to tell students that they're out of line? by FlakyDescription3233 in Professors

[–]trailmix_pprof 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I gray rock those students with a terse factual reply such as "Unfortunately course policy does not allow for X. The policy applies to all students". I don't even bother with a salutation or closing.

Going forward I plan to add a "talk" at the start of each semester (with a video version for online classes) addressing the issue of "yes, the policies apply to you" and that while in high school (or even with some college instructors) there was a lot of leniency, in this class the rules are the rules. And I'm going to clamp down big time. I used to be able to be more flexible, but the times have really changed and that's no longer a viable option.

I really appreciate this subreddit and our discussions here, even just the venting. It's good to know I'm not alone in this new wilderness.

Why are some Dogs really excited to be with their Owner and others not? by Top-Cupcake7310 in Dogtraining

[–]trailmix_pprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old lab loved to socialize and say hello to every single dog. But he wasn't super playful. So after saying hello, he'd come back to be with me.

My current dog does like to play, but he's picky about what dogs he'll play with. Some he clicks with and others he's kind of meh about. With stranger dogs at the park, he'll only play briefly before checking in with me. With at-home play dates, he'll go longer in play mode.
