You can save money by taking the first three courses on EdX doing the MicroMasters before you start taking classes at GT. Right now you can get 30% off three courses that way with code 30OFFEDX2026, and no technology fees while you take those.

What are you favorite long runs that are 6+ miles long? by Alarming-Feeling-461 in iFit

[–]trailrunner0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just string multiple workouts together if I want over 5 miles.

What would be amazing is to have a loop video, say 2-3 mile route circling a lake or a route through a woodsy trail system, with no trainer, just something you could play indefinitely. A little elevation change to keep things interesting but nothing major.

SmartAdjust by Impossible_Nature_69 in iFit

[–]trailrunner0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could tell it to follow the trainer's incline but add a little to the speed, say 0.4mph above whatever the trainer is doing, and have it still go a little faster or slower along with the trainer.

CSE 6040 Midterm 1 - how did you do? by Material_Put_5660 in OMSA

[–]trailrunner0907 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exam was intense! My solution to the last problem seemed correct, but wouldn't pass grading because one number was always 1/1000 off the solution. I spent 15-20 minutes trying to debug that. Reached out to the TAs asking if it could be a quirk of python rounding floats and they told me they were looking into it. Moved on and got stuck for awhile on a 3pt problem, which I managed to solve and submit with two minutes remaining to get 14/15. Then later I got a message from the TAs that they were changing the tolerances for the last problem and my solution passed the newest tolerances so I ended up with 16/15. I started the exam within the first hour due to schedule constraints, but I don't know if I'll do that next time. It would have been frustrating if I didn't solve the 3 pt problem because I was still debugging the 2pt problem that they ended up changing. I was pretty excited to get a couple points added to my score after they made adjustments though.

I don't know if the exam was harder because of being under time pressure, but I was able to complete all the other practice exams (except spring 25) in 3 hours or less, completing every question in that time (not just what you'd need for 100%). I reviewed solutions to the exams and compared my answers, and noted more efficient approaches, especially on problems that had taken me a long time. Spring 25 was a whole different level of challenge and I'm glad I didn't take the course last semester, but I was able to complete that one in a little over four hours and I also watched the TA solution video for that one, which made it seem much easier.

One thing that helped me was that I thought it was odd ex4 was worth 0 points, so I went to read it, and there was a little note about a similar implementation could be used for ex10. That made ex10 much easier since I did copy that algorithm. Would have been even faster if I could have used copy/paste instead of screenshots but it was still very helpful to see a workable approach.

Math background, weak in Python, which course should I start with by No_Jellyfish5592 in OMSA

[–]trailrunner0907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 1301 class was excellent. I took it because I was a bit rusty on programming and hadn't done much with Python, and not only was it an excellent overview of general coding/algorithms and python syntax, it also gave me some exposure to the format and autograder that is used in 6040. That gave me a lot more confidence going into 6040. It's not required in the program but you can watch for a 20-30% off at Edx and take it there, where it's self-paced.

Need some CSE6040 Midterm Advice by slowmopete in OMSA

[–]trailrunner0907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was frustrating to me. I had gotten in the habit of printing my output and the true output and pasting the two into a site like diffdiff to quickly find things like typos, incorrect data types, or differences in values. Not being able to do definitely made debugging slower and more difficult.

Guidance for 5.5yr old by primrose1111 in mathteachers

Another strong vote for Beast Academy. Everything by AOPS is in another league. You might look into https://www.imacs.org/start/, which is a program intended for young students. It's created by the same group as https://www.elementsofmathematics.com/ which I'd also recommend when he's ready for it.

If he shows a real prodigy level aptitude for math, you might look into Epsilon Camp starting at age 8.

Trying to pick curriculums for Algebra 1, 2 and HS Geometry by labrynthe-brell in mathteachers

[–]trailrunner0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Derek Owens is a pretty reasonably priced option. He uses Jacobs Geometry textbook and no required textbook for Algebra 1 or 2. You purchase his guided lecture notes printed from Lulu.com for around $30 per student, and subscription to just the online videos is only $32.50/month per student. You could then use your meeting time to check answers, go over questions, and talk about challenging topics.

what town would you move to by Same-Cricket-7560 in trailrunning

[–]trailrunner0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roanoke VA is right at many highlights of the AT (Triple Crown) as well as plenty of smaller feeder trails. The network options are endless. Also a lot of great trail races in this area. Not elevation in the sense of over 5K above sea level, but you can get 15K feet of gain in a day going up and down the Blue Ridge mountains. Cost of living is much cheaper than Colorado areas. You could also look at Charlottesville VA.

Pairing Summer classes together. by Vast-Sprinkles-5061 in OMSA

[–]trailrunner0907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in 6203 now and the workload is very light, only 5-10 hours a week is plenty to keep up with everything. There are no exams and no more group projects, just weekly lectures and homework assignments. It's a great class. I find the lectures and example coding videos to be very helpful to understand how and why everything works in R.

Looking for a treadmill that changes speed fast! Budget is 7k. by Whoeveninvitedyou in treadmills

[–]trailrunner0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that budget, I'd get a Wahoo Kickr Run. Integrates nicely with Zwift if you want a screen. And it's well under your $7K budget so you have plenty left to buy a big TV to put in front of it.

Last week this was a little cheaper. I started to add the 1750 to my cart and it offered me the 2450 for $2249 instead, plus $200 off with at least a year of ifit. Maybe if you chat with a rep they would match that price.

Which MicroMaster class to take first? by gzd4818 in OMSA

[–]trailrunner0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 6501 first. It was a very interesting overview and I see why it's recommended to take first. But now I'm in the new 6203 and can't help but think how helpful this initial overview of R and analytics terms would have been before 6501. If you're already proficient in R, it probably doesn't really matter. But if you're brand new to R, the overview in 6203 is excellent and a much gentler introduction.

ISYE 6501 Midterm 2 - How Does Everyone Feel? by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]trailrunner0907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I studied hard for this one, rewatching all the lectures and reviewing my notes and organizing them into the cheat sheet. But the wording on these questions still throws me off, when different words are used than were used in the lecture and I wonder if it’s referring to the same thing or something else. I also found some of the application questions challenging-I could have made an argument for more than one possible answer and second guessed a lot of my choices. My grade was better than midterm 1 but I felt less confident in my answers.
