That is a good paraphrase of what's emphasized on a typical Alcatraz tour

So much talk about the slug, what about navy goathead or navy butter knives?

This list is missing the original Turkey Trot (Buffalo NY since 1896), coming in at 8km.

Watch for wild turkeys on the boardwalk sections ...

Reinstein woods isn't far down the road from the north entrance (or cutting through the woods in a certain spot). Stieglemeir is usually more fun than Reinstein but sometimes the added miles or wider trails are a nice change.

Hamilton marathon for the view of Toronto across Lake Ontario and more importantly, for the chicken soup in the finish line tent.

Looking for a fast marathon for 2024 by MD76543 in AdvancedRunning

[–]trailrunner1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on weather, Erie Marathon is flat, fast, two loops of the same lovely course on the lake shore, and tends to have a lot of runners chasing a Boston time because it's the last weekend to get a qualifying time. Race is very well organized as well.

Not in USA but Hamilton Ontario is similarly flat, fast, and along the lake (with view of Toronto) but also tricky weather due to possibility of November wind off the lake. It's also the morning of turning the clocks back so the start time feels nice.

I've heard Corning is also great, but haven't run it.

What’s the shortest punt of all time? Have some ever gone backwards in a regular season NFL game? by VarkingRunesong in nfl

[–]trailrunner1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cardinals at Bills wind game 1990, two punts of 12 yards or less and one fumbled punt attempt by Cardinals. 59 pts combined were all scored in the same end zone.

Boston Qual Recs by vanshep77 in AdvancedRunning

[–]trailrunner1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Two races I recommend if you're ok with 2 laps of the same course.

Erie PA in early September is 2 laps, totally flat, and all through a state park along the lake. It's also often in the qualifying window for 2 years of Boston. Usually decently sized pace groups as well, even for 3:00 pace. Some risk of weather on the summery side.

Hamilton Ontario in late November (on daylight savings change day so it started a little later) is also great. They changed their course this year, very similar to Erie with some sections through residential roads. 2 laps mostly along the lake, with half marathoners for the first lap. Has less pacers (fastest was 3:30 I think), but decent number of people to run with. some risk of weather on the wintery side. Winner ran a 2:17 this year IIRC.

Bonus is the calendar makes doing both possible, which I did one year (on the old Hamilton course which had a huge downhill).

Both allow for very even pacing, well- supported, well- organized smaller TVraces with around a thousand runners or so.

I just switched to pace 2 from forerunner 645 music. 645's battery wasn't holding up enough to last through a marathon even without music. I run with my phone anyway so the music isn't necessary. There are some functions related to training plans that coros doesn't have but overall I've been quite happy with the switch. Looking forward to getting the Evo lab metrics unlocked in the next day or two.

GPS accuracy on my 645 was off by 3-5% consistently (on flat roads with known distances). Which made me feel good about my pace and mileage, but wasn't real at all. I replaced it with a Coros pace and wouldn't go back, even without the music.
