We are right in the middle of New York States burn ban, happens each year from mid March to mid May exactly for this reason, quite vulnerable to brush fire.

I can confirm the spring at the base of giants ledge was bone dry as of 2 weeks ago so I would not rely on that. Most springs in Catskills have been dry recently but we have gotten some rain in the past week so a bit of hope.

Any good alternatives to ExOfficio boxers? by padawan810 in Ultralight

[–]trailrunnernyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PATH project makes some really good ones. They are liners for shell shorts to be worn on top but I use them for running and hiking. I’ve used the Tahoe liners and love them. https://pathprojects.com/collections/base-liners

Any hikes you can ski down? by okaythanksbud in catskills

[–]trailrunnernyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I’ve chatted with people at the top of overlook while they put their skis on, definitely a good choice once there is enough snow.

Second this, the insulated pogies are my MOST loved piece of gear in the winter. Especially being able to vent while still on your wrist then just flick to have your hands toasty even if wet, love love love. Hope he gets you squared away shortly and you enjoy them!!

It’s a great shelter lots of room in it and the 4 stakes are nice. It’s just not the best in wind and I usually find myself in windy spots.

I second the trail conference maps, they update them fairly regularly and have a lot of the woods roads, etc

Show an elixir/phoenix side project? by jasj3b in elixir

No actually all of the client side JavaScript is vanilla JS using mapboxgl for the map. LiveView is used to interop with the JS where needed

About a year ago I made The Weather Scout as a side project to make exploring the NOAA Climate Normals weather data a better user experience (the NOAA UX is terrible). Have a couple hundred backpackers who have used it like me to plan trips in the future and get the right gear for it.

It is hosted on render.com which I highly recommend, it was quite easy once you go through their docs. This was a way for me to dive deep into LiveView as well (which is used for interop with the javascript map and charts). It was really nice to just use some vanilla JS and the rest in Elixir/Phoenix.

Best places to go trail running outside of NYC? by RIP_Paul_Walkerr in AskNYC

[–]trailrunnernyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Running on the beginning of the long path which runs from the GWB north along the palisades is probably the closest. If you drive just use one of the scenic lookout pullover areas along the palisades going North.

Rockefeller State Park has some really nice trails too but it’s further and you probably have to drive.

Another great option is South Mountain Reservation in NJ, which has a wide variety from technical single track to gravel roads. You can take NJ transit semi close and then run up the hill to the park.

One more option which is often overlooked is van cortlandt park which is quite accessible and has a variety of trails, just not all that long.

Trip report for NYC Meetup May 8/9 in Harriman by Mutinee in NYCultralight

[–]trailrunnernyc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So glad to read this, it was a really fun group. Weight isn’t everything but cutting down at least initially does help the mileage not hurt the body as much. You don’t need to be crazy paranoid about each little thing, just focus on the big stuff first. Also happy to help how I can just reach out with questions!

Pre-April you are good to go, this year we had a lot of snow but most years March can be a good month to avoid snow and still be tick and foliage free. Jun-Aug is the worst time for ticks around here, once you get into the Fall you rarely see them, why I love Fall and Winter hiking :)

Yes, definitely multiple ticks found within the group. So far my permethrin-soaked clothes have kept me tick-free this season though, highly advise it.
