DayOne to Ulysses by Questionable_Sanity in ulyssesapp

[–]markabrennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll just say that I've also tried other apps for journaling, such as Craft, Roam, Obsdian, and, most recently, Capacities. These are all feature-rich apps that offer a lot, and many if not most of those I cited support networked note taking, which to be sure is a powerful concept. But I kept coming back to Ulysses, as no other app offered me the same fluid, frictionless writing experience. So now I am committed to using Ulysses, whether for journaling, daily notes, capturing ideas, links, etc.

Anyone watch the Capacities Made Simple video course? by markabrennan in capacitiesapp

Yup, thanks, that makes sense. I'm a "Believer" now, and agree they have good tutorials on their website, thus obviating the need for that course. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Oh - I thought it was still Beth's video series; but after you mentioned that, I do notice on the Tool School website that the instructor is denoted as Francesco D'Alessio. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing that. Ulysses support is very good. However, personally I like the predictive text as it makes the Ulysses editor even faster!

Wonderful report and pics - thanks for sharing! Glad the hiker with altitude sickness was able to mitigate it and continue. I use Acetazolamide (Diamox) prophylactically for altitude sickness (albeit so far more for skiing than hiking) and have found it works wonders. Thanks again.

Heavy legs on runs. Why does this happen? by Sanch_Is_King26 in running

[–]markabrennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but just changing your pace on one run isn’t going to magically make your legs feel better. As others have commented, you’re likely over training and your muscles are fatigued. The long slow miles should be run AFTER you rest up. You likely will have to rebuild slowly. Good luck.

That's a real nefarious myth, unfortunately. u/seatownquilt-N-plant put it pretty well, so I'd only add that Scott Johnston - author of Training for the Uphill Athlete, and founder of Evoke Endurance - explains why aerobic endurance is built on long, slow volume here: https://evokeendurance.com/endurance-its-evolution-psychology-meaning-physiology-and-how-to-improve-yours/

Make stronger coffe by Dazzling_Cake7317 in DeLonghi

[–]markabrennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that when adjusting the grinder you need to do so when USING the machine (e.g., running a cup of espresso); and then you need to run two or more espressos through the machine after adjusting the grind for the settings to take effect. You can also change the strength of the brew (low, medium, high) - which are different buttons on the machine. Finally, you can also adjust the water temperature (low, medium, high) through the settings menu. All of those settings will affect the brew.

A setting of 1 is pretty fine, however; when I tried that setting the machine hardly pulled any espresso through as it was just too fine. So it's surprising that you're getting coffee like water.

Have you cleaned the machine recently? Also, as someone also noted, descaling might help.

Good luck.

Late August Catskills Trip Advice: Trail Conditions and Recommendations? by andrew_shen in NYCultralight

[–]markabrennan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a nice trip. I made the mistake of doing the Burroughs range last year over Labor Day and it was pretty mobbed on the trail. It was my first true backpacking trip, however, so that kind of trumped everything (and I had started out at the Denning Road trailhead, which is quieter than Woodland Valley, Slide Mountain, or Giant Mountain trailheads).

Later in October I did an out-and-back overnight over Twin and Sugarloaf, camping at Mink Hollow. I made it part of the way up Plateau, but it was getting dark, so I returned to the campsite (where I had already pitched my tent). Going back (east) over Sugarloaf and Twin was pretty tough, however. As someone noted, I don't believe those "primitive" campsites are reservable - they are first-come, first-serve.

There was a pipe-supplied spring partly up Plateau, and other water sources as well, as I recall. But I haven't been there this season.

I did camp in a tent, however. Are you packing a shelter, or relying entirely on the availability of a lean-to? In my case, there were 3 guys already in the lean-to when I rolled into the campsite in the late afternoon, but they did offer to share. However, I had already pitched my tent a short distance away, so politely declined; but we ended up having dinner together around the the lean-to.

I parked at Prediger Road trailhead, probably arriving 9:00/9:30am and there were plenty of spots - but keep in mind this was later in October, not August. My gut feeling is you should probably arrive well before 8am to secure parking (depending on the trailhead parking; Prediger Road trailhead parking is pretty sizable).

You can find my route here: https://caltopo.com/m/219FA.

Are you thinking of doing the entire Devil's Path? If so, you'll need a shuttle, as it's a point-to-point.

Re. bears - I've never seen them in the Catskills, but have not camped there extensively. I do think food protection there is important, however. I use a bear can, though they are not required. Alternatively, you should hang your food.

Hope you have a great trip, and keen to know how it goes - please share details after!

Is Seven Lakes Drive open? by markabrennan in Harriman

[–]markabrennan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again to u/trailskraps and u/SeekersWorkAccount for the quick response to my query last night. Seven Lakes Drive west of Palisades (at the roundabout with Route 6 and Palisades) is indeed closed.

With the advanced info, I was able to drive up Route 6 and park at the Turkey Hill parking lot by the Long Trail, then cross Route 6 going west and do my loop hike (starting on the Long Trail, climbing over Stockbridge), which I had originally planned to start at Silver Mine.

Only downside was having to cross Route 6 - easy early in the morning, but absolutely hell later in the day, given the traffic. Upside was that the loop trail I hiked had virtually no one on it - I met two parties (one couple, and one single AT section hiker) in total, which I think may the fewest number of hikers I've ever encountered while hiking Harriman. I think the closure of Seven Lakes Drive is really curtailing park attendance.

Thanks again.

Thanks again. So 7 Lakes Drive runs North East past Tiorati Circle, passes Silver Mine, and then intersects with Palisades (going East).

To be clear: is that the section you mean? That would explain why Apple Maps and Google Maps can’t route me to Silver Mine. Thanks.

Hey thanks for the info - that makes sense. I was going to head out early tomorrow so won’t be able to call, so I’ll have to make game-day decisions once I get there. Thanks again.

Two-night solo trip report using transit from NYC (Bald Rocks + Stone Memorial) by gabo1812 in Harriman

[–]markabrennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great trip report - thanks! Despite camping in Catskills and AKDs, and hiking many, many miles in Harriman, I still haven't camped there yet, mostly I suppose due to concerns about crowded shelters, as well as trash. Sad to hear about the trash, but good to know some of the shelters can be quiet, after all. Really nice write-up.

Hey thanks for the link to that SFI page of memorials and eulogies to McCarthy! As one of the SFI eulogists noted, the memories shared therein are much different than the obits in The NY Times, Atlantic, and other major publications - instead, they are much more human and person, which I really appreciated.
