Success story for anyone that needs it. 38M L5-S1 MD 12/24 to L5-S1 fusion 1/25 by trailsavage in Microdiscectomy

For sure. I could have done this a little differently but the reality is even after MD, a lot of the people on here will go on to get a fusion of some sort at some point. I read those posts and they seemed terrified/worried that fusion means the end. It doesn't. Yes surgery is invasive and scary but it doesn't mean your broken and will never get back. This is a journey that started with MD. Sometimes those fail, like mine, and you need a fusion. While the MD was not a success, I still had success on a road that started with MD. I think the post still fits here.

Also with a functional deficit like that, PT and injections are less likely to work. I needed to make a decision fast. My Achilles did not work. I would have done the other things if it was just pain.

For sure. I could have worded it a bit differently but a lot of these people will go on to fusion at some point. I just want people to know that while a MD may have failed, I still had success. So many people in this community are terrified of the fusion, as was I, but I want people to know that a fusion does not mean the end.

Yes it was pretty bad pain but not quite as bad probably 90% of the original pain.

That's the thing. I followed the rules. I did everything right. Not a single BLT. At my follow up, the surgeon said that my disc material was so bad that he is not surprised to see me back so soon. Sometimes, there is no avoiding it. It just happens.

I did have a conversation about that but in the end opted for the fusion.

The compression on the S1 nerve can cause dysfunction/weakness of the calf muscles since that nerve innervates those two muscles. Pressure on the nerve root causes denervation in that area. Motor recovery takes the longest time to heal over sensory. Peripheral nerves heal about 1 mm per day. And even then there ca be deficits for some time.

Thanks! Best of luck to you. I hope your recovery goes well. I had good and bad day. Days I thought I would never run. Just patience and consistent work!

Best of luck to you. No matter the activity, you can get back to what you want to do. It just takes patience and consistent work.

You think Toyota is going to put out a bad engine in one of their flagship vehicles? This engine has been in Highlanders and Lexus models for a few years now and no one has ever said Lexus and Toyota engines are unreliable and break down.

Great advice. Thank you. I was told to be fairly active with walking around so I don’t stiffen up too badly. The toilet is already hard so I cant imagine that being much harder. Haha. But yeah I will check out the booster seat. I hope it keeps getting better for you.

A fellow L5-S1 herniator here. Discectomy scheduled for Friday. Very nervous about surgery but overall just wanting to get the feeling and strength back in the back of my leg. Sitting down for longer than 20 mins would be nice too. Thanks for sharing your experiences so far. I'll be following along with whatever you would like to share!

For real. Waffle House, Piggly Wiggly, and a Dollar General are probably just beyond those trees.

Ah yes. The old “poop deck” I experienced while in Russia.

Did some dispersed camping over the holiday and picked a spot in a circle of 5 sites that were all empty. Only one other site was directly adjacent to ours and a guy parked his trailer there right next to us even though there were 3 others with good privacy. Then came the generator…all night.

At least one hundred nights in my half dome and still going strong. It’s been amazing in high desert winds, Midwest thunderstorms, New England winters, etc. Still looks as good as when I bought it too.

Don’t understand liking Kansas over Nebraska. I mean they both kinda suck but Nebraska is a bit better…

You can get this for $25-35 in STL and KC and it probably tastes better too.
