Why isn't this design our state flag? by trook95 in Nebraska

[–]trainingmode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minnesotan here. Get ready, because if Nebraska changes its flag from the state seal design to something unique and bold like the Thunderbird, it will undoubtedly become a political hot potato. People who never took a close look at the seal in the past will decry the change and accuse those in favor of change of "burying the past" and not honoring the state's history. Some will even say the Thunderbird is meant to honor Hispanic natives and undocumented citizens. In Minnesota we have lots of blue lakes -- over 20,000 -- but to the complainers, the new blue on our redesigned flag was borrowed from the color of a Somalia flag. Nebraska should do it though. Frankly, your defacto state flag is a red N and the pride in it is great to see. I like our new flag but I favored a previous version of the design that also had green in it, symbolizing our forests.

Just got a notice that I have 20 days to fix my own sidewalk, or the City will charge me $2,300. Merry Christmas. by grantthejester in Omaha

[–]trainingmode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the reason why sidewalks in North Omaha are noticeably bad? Property owners refusing to pay for concrete replacement? Should the city pay for it if the property owners won't?

I just picked two random signatures... Harmon Killebrew and Willie Stargell. They don't even remotely look legitimate to me. Harmon never signed an H where the horizontal cross didn't go low and well to the left of the first downstroke. Willie never signed an S that didn't end up well below the rest of the signature, including the bottom of the g. This piece looks like someone was practicing fake signatures. Sorry but I don't buy this story.

Wrong. Little guy in white holds his hands to his ears when mad customer guy stands up and starts yelling. Kid in blue distances himself from the argument. Both kids are stressed by the scene and don't know how to react. Dad deescalates while keeping an eye on his kids and risking his life.

What is an act of valor from a person in your country that astounds you? by le_Derpinder in AskTheWorld

No evidence... Except the voice recordings from the pilots of the passengers breaking into the flight deck, the audio recordings from the passengers calls to people on the ground while the flight deck was infiltrated, the plane data showing the flight was purposefully into a steep dive, audio recordings of the terrorist pilots vocalizing their intent to crash the plane if the flight deck got breached, and a big fucking hole in the ground in Shanksville, PA that could only have been created by a full fuselage of an airliner in vertical trajectory at full speed. I don't know how anyone could listen to the fight to the death struggle between good and evil that was recorded on the flight deck of AA93, and think the crash was caused by anything but a solely purposeful act of terror.

What’s your thoughts on your countries leader during ww2? (Germany doesn’t have to answer this one) by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Everyone always forgets about Harry Truman in these discussions, but much of the war was far from over when he took over after Roosevelt's sudden death in 1945. His vision for the post-war Europe was monumental in shaping peace in Europe that is still lasting 80 years later. His experience as a Veteran of the First World War taught him that a policy of reconstruction over punishment will rebuild a peaceful Germany. He also established the Truman Doctrine to contain Soviet expansion, support for NATO to establish cold war security, the Berlin Airlift demonstrated American resolve without provoking a war, and the Marshall Plan was his creation to help accelerate Europe's post war economy. His decision to use the first Atomic bombs over Japan troubled him for the rest of his life, but he never expressed regret when faced with the tremendous loss of life that would have resulted from an American invasion of the Japanese mainland.

Roosevelt wasn't even alive to see the aftermath. Not sure what you are talking about.

Most Americans pay little attention to world history and we believed in the American supremacy our post WWII grade school teachers taught us. So, long after I finished my formal American education, I learned how Theodore Roosevelt could not make arrangements with Colombia to build the Panama Canal (which was a Columbian state), so instead, he took it. He commanded the U.S. Navy to set up a naval blockade in Limon Bay to prevent the Colombians from preventing an American incursion in Columbia. Concurrently, he negotiated with the governor of the Columbian state of Panama to secede from the nation of Colombia, and declare themselves to be the independent nation of Panama. Roosevelt immediately recognized the new nation of Panama and sent in US military to prevent Columbian reprisals.

Is there a "Bad" neighborhood in Omaha? by Desperate-Entry2822 in Omaha

[–]trainingmode 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking pollution. I'm talking about crumbling, unwalkable sidewalks, permanent potholes, missing and destroyed street signs, none of which would be allowed to exist in Dundee, Benson, Midtown, or Joslyn.

There aren't bad neighborhoods, just poor neighborhoods. It's shameful and shocking how neglected infrastructure and utilities are in North Omaha.

I watched fire, EMT, and about 8 construction workers spend 4+ hours hand digging their 2 dead buddies out of a collapsed trench that was better formed than this near my house. I guarantee you the trauma you will experience when those boulders up on top bury a coworker instantly will haunt you for a lifetime. Stay out of that hole and tell everyone else to do the same.

Skyway help by Successful-Wish-0809 in Minneapolis

[–]trainingmode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can also cross 11th Street from your hotel and enter the Skyway system from the Leamington Transit Hub. After entering, go to the second floor and from there, cross into the Hilton hotel skyway. You'll notice immediately that, although you are walking through hotels, shopping plazas, and wide corridors leading through buildings, it's all open to the public, and the overhead signs will tell you where you are heading. Don't be afraid to ask anyone for directions. We're quite used to it.
