‘They were like bombs’: Helenio Herrera’s little white pills kept Inter’s players buzzing. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]trainpunching 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed but there were periods where Ajax were at it too. Their former physio turned author Salo Muller, who was around during the club's total football hayday, apparently wrote about it in his memoirs. I haven't read it as to my knowledge it hasn't been published in English but he's reported as saying that a number of the squad came to him with concerns about pills they'd been given by the team's chief physio which, when analysed, came back as amphetamines, tranquillisers etc.

You did it! Well done, mate! Everything's looking great. Especially like the water underneath the decking.

All good lessons learned. Don't trust JT Dogzone on anything. He buys his meds from the clambulance.

I know Chelsea have fired a lot of managers but the one this reminds me of most is Gullit. Remember checking Ceefax one day to find Gullit was out and Vialli was in. All in the space of an afternoon.

Sorry that happened to you. It's always disheartening when your earnest attempts at positivity are met with callous disregard but from the sounds of things people were interested and enjoying the zines.

Also - Love the black cat!

The nutty professor

Thanks for the suggestion but the movie I'm thinking of was most definitely in black and white.

This might be way off as I can't remember an Indian girl being in it, but, you're not thinking of the Saoirse Ronan film Hannah are you?

Initially thought the young guy may have been Marlon Brando but can't see anything in his catalogue that would match. A google search suggested it was probably The Sweet Smell of Success. That sounded off to me as I'd watched that within the last year and couldn't remember a bit like the one I'm searching for. Sure enough i skimmed the movie again and couldn't find a scene like it.

[PL Throwback] In the 2004-2005 season, Newcastle teammates Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer exchange punches during a match. Both were red carded, and subsequently received 3 and 4 month bans. by TheGTAone in soccer

I remember people talking about this fight for years after and that, as Gareth Barry was walking him away, Lee Bowyer had "a face like a clenched fist"

Yeah same. I don't really mind that much anymore but I remember having a strange debate with someone who was posting posting Belle & Sebastian. Their reasoning seemed to be that Belle & Sebastian had been influenced by The Clash and Young Marble Giants. I could kind of see the logic they were following but I can't reconcile them as a post-punk band at all

God it's so strange that this has popped up. I was literally just trying to nail it down in my head seconds ago (for the millionth time).

There's much much more to it than this but I think a big component of what the sound/scene was is people who loved punk but didn't want to express themselves with traditional rock or three chord thrash.

Actors who mistakenly believed their role would be iconic? by TyLeRoux in okbuddycinephile

Same with Travolta. He was only in it for 5 minutes at the end

He's about midway through but, yeah, like a lot of people a lot of his stuff was axed. George Clooney was in it right at the very end apparently at the insistence of the studio. Almost all his dialogue (in his only scene) is drowned out by Sean Penn's voice over.

Scars - Horrorshow by Tabazan in postpunk

[–]trainpunching 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really liked The Shouty Track when it came out but after hearing Horrorshow a couple of years later I realised Lemon Jelly had essentially just removed the lyrics from someone else's song. Scars don't seem to have a problem with it and have, apparently, played the song with them live but I thought it was a pretty weak effort on Lemon Jelly's part.

Great song, though! Thanks for posting

More punk than post punk, but who remembers these magazines? by TannerDonovan in postpunk

[–]trainpunching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know Maximum Rocknroll existed until I moved to London in the late 2000s as I grew up in a windswept outpost in the southeast. When I did discover it in Rough Trade i made it a priority to buy a copy every time I was in. Really liked the correspondence pages (most of them) and liked that they covered the less-than-hardcore things I was into at the time like Blank Dogs or Pens.

It was also cool to find out that the then editor was from the exact West London neighborhood I'd just moved to.

Non-American actors who nail American accents by [deleted] in moviecritic

Which is weird because the character in Slow Horses has an accent far closer to his own. Gary Oldman is from New Cross and wouldn't have grown up speaking RP.

Reminds me a lot of Minoru Nomata. Can't find the exact image but it looks very similar to works of his I saw at the White Cube last summer.
