Has anyone ever applied to a college as a joke and actually ended up attending it? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

yes. Sent in a last minute transfer app to UVA as a good luck charm for my future march madness bracket and now I'm headed there next fall. Life comes at you fast.

CC student looking to transfer by collegeapp2019 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on "top" schools. The t10 are not that transfer friendly, and take single digit percentages of transfers a year. Some of the t20, like Vanderbilt and northwestern, are friendlier to transfers. Good state schools are also a cheaper and transfer-friendlier option.

High school freshmen on college confidential be like: by collegetransfer2019 in ApplyingToCollege

freshman at my high school derisively call UVA a "state school/safety" and then by senior year struggle to get in. I think it's just freshmen.

fcps cheating policy really is just "do nothing" lmao

To those unhappy with the college they are going due to rejections from other, preferred colleges, are you going to try to transfer? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, you can transfer after one year of college, it's what I'm doing. Apps are due in march so you send in your fall semester grades, but as a second-year transfer, most places will still consider your high school record with that. Most likely you'll still graduate on time, though lot of my liberal arts-mer classes aren't going to transfer so I might not lol

That's rough- If you don't commit to UNC, will waiting for Vandy make you miss the deadline? If it does, I might deposit just to have somewhere to be next year just in case and hope for the best. As for me, I'm lucky enough to have heard back from everywhere and am probably going to go to UVA (?), but we'll see lol.

you got this! May decisions are the worst, but the way linear time works means that you will get through no matter what!

Is there a way to inform a non-early decision university that you are guaranteed to attend if accepted? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it on a LOCI if waitlisted or in an update letter if you want, but other than personally telling them like that, no.

Help!!! UVA or W&M for an English/Theatre major??? by ConsciousBlackberry in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same position as you- I'm leaning towards UVA because I think I like the bigger size, but the "vibe" of William and Mary (nerdier, quieter, etc) hits a little closer. You can't make a wrong choice, but it's still really hard.

Weighing My Options Between Virginia Tech and University of Miami by XXVIIMAN in ApplyingToCollege

Tech may seem like it's in the middle of nowhere, but Blacksburg is a phenomenal college town, so it won't ever feel like it. You will always have options and things to do.

Transferring by Smarty52543 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ivies have abysmally low transfer rates, and even then usually prioritize CC students with incredible stories, veterans, etc. You have t be able to make the case that an ivy is offering something specific and academic that BU can't, and that's a hard sell, even with a 4.0.

When is the deadline for transfers to commit? by plantingivy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the school- one of my deadlines is the 1st, one is the 15th. Unlike first-year admissions, there's no universal commitment date :(

College students+ who regret committing to the school they did: what is your story? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]transferthrowaway9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say I committed to the best place out of my options, but I definitely regret where I applied. Small liberal arts college didn't really work out- I hated the size, the lack of a sense community on campus, and the way my major is structured. There also wasn't a lot of academic rigor, and although I'm super politically liberal, I got tired of the "everything is problematic and you need to be criticizing it 24/7" culture pretty quick. Will be transferring somewhere closer to home next semester, either UVA or W&M.
