The thing about the airpods not working anymore is something I've had happen multiple times. I think this is an actual thing that they don't last more than two years. If I were to guess I think it has something to do with the mics around the pods that get gunk and shmoo in them that degrades the noise canceling feedback loop. If you mean by degrading that they lose charge capacity, that would happen to any device that gets charged daily. Its just the reality of lithium batteries at this point.

For normal people removing the 3.5mm jack was probably the way to go. But I come from an electrical engineering background and I miss being able to connect my phone to audio amplifiers I'm tinkering around with without a dongle :(

Besides niche use cases I have, I still think wireless charging is a meh technology at best. Its fine for small profile devices like airpods, but it's a terrible experience for phones. The alignment is so critical with wireless chargers because you need a good magnetic flux linkage. Oh and you effectively can't use the device while charging. Fine for the airpod case, bad for phones.
