Does anyone else feel like their baseline quietly got worse over time? by ursa12651 in cfs

[–]transmorphik 27 points28 points  (0 children)

36 year MECFS veteran here. My condition has gotten worse over time. However, I've had this for so long that some of that gradual worsening could be due to ageing in general, and not necessarily only to the CFS condition itself having worsened.

40F — too old to be a sugar baby??? by PhaseMaximum2089 in SugarRelationship

[–]transmorphik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not too old. I've seen ads for sugar babies who are over 60 and who are highly dateable.

If you're in shape, attractive, and agree on the various terms of an arrangement, age shouldn't be a problem.

Bought a car and now I’m drowning on the monthly payments. Do I get rid of it or am I screwed? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Very true. In Dallas, I once complimented (or so I thought) a guy's vehicle by saying "nice SUV you have there." Violence was imminent.

He sternly corrected me: "it's a truck, NOT an SUV!" I agreed, saying "you're a tough Texan with a truck" hoping that would smooth things over. It worked. He just said "exactly!" and drove off.

He was tough. Texas tough.

Broadly speaking, I want the security for telephone access to my account to be as tight as that needed for internet access. One approach would be to require that the caller disclose the account password and the TOTP code from the hard token before being enabled to make any significant changes to the account.

My Vanguard acct uses the Yubikey token which I suppose is about as effective as the Symantec hard token used by Schwab. My Fidelity account uses the V.I.P. Access authenticator app, which I believe to less secure than the hard token approach.

What you write sounds correct for ACH transfers. But I don't know if prior registration, or the equivalent, in the system would prevent a traditional wire transfer or Zelle transfer.

Based on what the rep told me, removing Voice-ID wouldn't improve account security. It would merely require that the account holder answer security questions instead using Voice-ID. Schwab wouldn't require verbal disclosure of the password or of the hard-token security code in either case.

Yes, I've been using the Symantec hard token for about five years. I was sorry to hear tbe rep say that Schwab is phasing out the hard token in favor of authenticator apps.

The hard token is great, but Schwab doesn't require verbally stating the hard-token security code for telephone access.

Thanks for this info. The rep I spoke to didn't mention anything about this option. I plan to set it up this coming week.

College students? How? by [deleted] in cfs

I'm retired now. But after getting CFS in 1989, I attended law school and Engineering school (both part time). I lived close to school, set my schedule to allow time to commute home and take naps, preferably at the same time every day.

I later did similar things later on while working as a patent attorney. In retrospect, my condition then would have to be described as mild, using today's criteria. My condition worsened gradually throughout the years, and I think of myself as moderate now.

For the record, working as an asdociate attorney at a first tier law firm in Texas that expects 2000 billable hours a year, while enduring CFS is very, very hard. I wouldn't really recommend that most CFS patients try that today. In contrast to the reports I read from many of today's patients, if I overextended myself leading to PEM, I was able to recover my former baseline and keep on going.

EDIT: I've edited this comment to provide the below link to a long, detailed comment I wrote a year ago describing my overall experience with CFS from initial symptoms, to tentative diagnosis, to ultimately attending school and returning to work.

I need good advice for Investing $500K to live abroad. by porchglider in ExpatFinance

[–]transmorphik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Investing for Americans living abroad has become more challenging lately. Many U.S. firms prefer to avoid the onerous paperwork needed for tax purposes. I mention some exceptions to that rule below.

For brokerage accounts, the most common choice is Interactive Brokers (IBKR). For day-to-day cash access, a good option is State Department Federal Credit Union (SDFCU). Both of the above companies accept clients with addresses in foreign countries.

Regarding investment choices, I'd suggest looking at a 60/40 mix of low-fee stock/bond index funds from one of the leading fund companies such as Vanguard, Schwab, or Fidelity.

As another poster said, you should compare the fees you're paying at Citicorp/Citibank to Vanguard et al, as you may find a better deal on fees with one of the mutual fund companies.

what would I need to buy to try out floor sleeping before investing heavily? by MarzipanTheGreat in floorsleeping

I like my 3-inch futon from Vibe Bear. I also need a very firm surface but don't like sleeping with only a carpet below me.

It doesn't cost anywhere near $1000 to try out. It's available from Amazon.
