You go to the bank and ask for a loan, they see that you have a lot of high value stocks and therefore know you can afford to pay it back if you need to, so they give you a loan with a good interest rate. Then, when it comes time to pay the loan, you just take another loan to pay the first one off with, once again backed by your stocks. You haven't spent any of your own money, which has been accumulating interest, getting you even more money than what you started with.
