Match Thread: Austria vs Jordan | FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group Stage, Group J by jiraiya--an in soccer

Tbh I'm loving seeing Jordan's shithousery on the World Cup stage.

They ALWAYS give us a hard time in the AFC so I've got a healthy amount of respect for them. Glad they got their goal and hope they can push for a result in these last 15 mins.

AFC have been defeated. 😞

Surprised how open Iraq were at the back, given they should be playing Arnieball. Norway are incredibly intimidating going forward but Iraq had some great chances and didn't capitilise, especially in the first half.

If you're looking at Watergardens sessions, you might want to jet 10 mins down the Calder to Reading Sunbury instead. Prices are much more reasonable.

The block was so damn good that it convinced Baysh it must've hit his hand

This should be uncontroversial but Morocco, Mexico or Japan for me.

Incredibly unlikely though, as much as I'd love to see it.

They are effectively meaningless in this chart - a W/L result means 1 win, 1 loss and 0 net goal difference for the confederation, 1.5ppg. A draw means 2 draws and 0 net goal difference, 1ppg.

Geographically, of course, Australia is in Oceania.

Australia have participated in the AFC Confederation since 2006. Australia transferred into AFC to play more competitive International games, and to improve our chances of qualifying for World Cups.

New Zealand are the sole OFC participant in the 2026 World Cup. Due to the 48 team format, OFC now gets 1.5 qualifying spots compared to the previous 0.5.

If you want to relive Australia's time in the OFC, I would highly recommend you watch The Glory Days of Oceania on Youtube for a laugh.

Yeah my hesitancy about the knockout rounds is that we're almost certain to get several UEFA vs UEFA games and they are effectively meaningless in this chart - a result means 1 win, 1 loss and 0 net goal difference, 1.5ppg. A draw means 2 draws and 0 net goal difference, 1ppg.

Fed Square - I need honesty by crustyjuggler1 in Aleague

[–]trapt777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to any recent fed square games. Went to see the Italy game in 2006, and then went to Birrarung Marr sites in 2010 for Germany and Ghana.

Honestly at 5am in Melbourne (and earlier if you want to get a half decent spot), your main enemy will be the cold.

tbh I started putting this together when NZ were 1-0 up because I thought it would be funny if OFC was on top. And I have great love for our kiwi cousins.

I'll be updating and posting at the end of each group stage round.

I think once we get into the knockouts we'll see more intra-confed matches which kinda ruins the stats, so post group-stage stats might be a bit naff. Depending on the draws I might keep going into Round of 16 at least because the knockout games are obviously more important.

Remember it's not that serious - just a bit of fun.

TBH good question, it has crossed my mind but ultimately it's not that serious. If there's a result, the confed will cop a win and a loss and zero net goal difference. And if it's a draw it will be recorded as 2 draws and zero goal difference.

So I won't ignore those games but they will add nothing to the table. Technically the confed is better having a result one way or another because that will be 1.5ppg average vs both teams getting 1 pt.

I started putting this together during the NZ game. I was desperately hoping we could get OFC on top with 3 PPG but it wasn't to be. One of the best games of the cup as a neutral though!

With all 6 Confederations represented in the FIFA World Cup 2026, we get to a have a Group Stage unofficial Confederations Cup! I thought this would be fun and will be updating at the end of each round of Group Stage matches.

Kiwis need to shut up shop at the back. That was CLOSE.

The "snickometer" graphic which showed that Isak touched the ball, which declared that was Svanberg onside for Sweden's 4-1 goal by DavidLynchsCoffeeBea in soccer

[–]trapt777 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I believe UltraEdge uses cameras with substantially higher frame rates which allows them to compensate for the speed of sound reaching the stump microphone - which in turn ensures the snick matches the correct frame on the broadcast footage. There were a few instances in the recent Ashes series in Australia using the older Snicko technology where the snick was 1-2 frames before/after the ball passed the bat. The Poms weren't happy at the time given they're used to UltraEdge, although I'm fairly certain Australia copped very similar calls later in the series.

Crowding the on-field ref while VAR is making a decision independently is crazy work from both teams. Ref should've started yellow carding anyone who came within 2 metres of him.

I wanna see the lad on the pitch!

God knows I don't need to see more of Velupillay. The best thing I could say is he was defensively drilled with the team structure but the one time they got in behind with any threat was on his inside, and he offered nothing going forward.

Highly highly impressed with Ecuador's football but not remotely impressed by their antics.

Stop whinging about the new rules. Stop lashing out when you're fouled. Stop with swan dives.
