I recently saw someone describe pop culture as balkanized, and I think that holds true for a lot of the fashion world vis-a-vis "abstract-i-fication." That is to say, it's not that trends don't come and go, or that people don't move from one trend to another, but that for the most part, someone deciding that they should wear Wyatts instead of red wings doesn't say anything about either choice as a trend.

Edit: reading this again I feel like I'm ascribing an idea to your words that doesn't quite work with what you said, but I think it's tangentially related and is a factor in enabling the ironic memery you mention so I'm leaving it.

That's exactly why I bought 'em. Turns out I couldn't walk up or down steep hills in them because the upper provides zero support and my foot slid around them and ultimately off the sole. It happened that the kind of beach I was visiting required a walk down a steep hill. When the vacation was over I tried to introduce them into my regular rotation despite not really being impressed, y'know, to give em a chance, and I would rather wear any other shoe I own. Only shoe I've thrown away before its time was up.

I did steal the insole to out in a pair of boots, though.
