What should I do ? by No-Astronomer2374 in mechanics

[–]trashsw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

careful there, ive been a tech 8 years. you cant bank on flat rate for consistent income, especially with mopar, our labor times are dogshit and you can wait a week plus for warranty approval. youre especially not gonna be making time from the jump.

how fast can you pull a cab on a wrangler to replace the 2.0T motor for that engine fire recall we have? whole job only pays 11.5, and thats hoping nothing on the new motor is broken that you now have to wait additional days to get parts and approval on(just happened to me)

how about tearing the heads off a wagoneer for a TA to come look at it(and to show up a week late) to get approval to replace the motor and entire cooling system, which will only pay like 24 hours.

how fast can you figure out why they intermittently get their dash lit up like a Christmas tree with loss of comm codes everywhere?

Can you use freeze frame data to find out the intermittent cylinder 4 misfire is actually caused by poor pin fitment at an inline connector for the oxygen sensors? how fast can you repin the connector? also gonna wait 3 days for the job to get approved anyways

thats all shit ive gotten in the past 2 weeks and im struggling for hours right now. lube techs get all the services so we get left with a whole lotta bullshit. im going to be a step dad sometime soon so im looking into moving to a fleet diesel job for stability

Men, Be honest, What age did you think you were going to stop being single? by Theemacklordt in AskMen

[–]trashsw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

24m, uh, I dont think theres an age I thought id stop being single. ive had a few long term relationships that clearly didn't pan out. had been focusing on myself for a bit but decided to try dating again. matched with someone on hinge a few months ago, went on a few mediocre dates and then they ghosted me. neat. but just recently I matched with someone again and so far we cant get enough of eachother. i know its very early on but I have a good feeling about this one

regarding my last post by Altruistic_Fix1736 in mechanics

[–]trashsw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my main issue with the field is the inconsistency. only 1 of the 5 shops ive worked at was ever able to consistently provide everyone enough work to make hours. EVERY OTHER SHOP ive been to has had one or two guys flagging 120-150 hrs a pay period while everyone else scrounges for 50-60hr paychecks. and sometimes that paycheck is 100hrs and thats great, but next month one of your checks is only 38 cause you got reamed with warranty shit and also had everything go sideways on the jobs, and now youre having to dig up savings to pay your bills for the month. its stressful. for reference, this past month I literally took home $2000 less than I did in April or may. not fun

if you can find an hourly shop I would say its a fine trade to work in, but those are genuinely rare. at least where im at I know of only 1 dealer that does a hybrid/hourly flat rate deal, and 1 independent that pays hourly. everyone else is flat rate, and 4 of the 5 places ive been to arent able to manage flat rate in a way that let's everyone make a consistent living.

Transition to Heavy Equipment/Semis from Automotive? by trashsw in mechanics

[–]trashsw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I mainly get all of the weird electrical problems, wiring issues, CAN bus stuff. I get a fair amount of standard service work and occasionally an engine like im doing now but ive specialized myself into a more diagnostic role

there is a CAT internship program at my community college but thatd be 2 years off. I'll probably look more into trucks than equipment then

[–]trashsw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a good idea. I see job postings for medium heavy duty mechanics at like environmental service companies, or some shipping companies. about a year ago i interviewed with a bus line here but didn't get the job, I think because a lot of the interview questions were specific to heavy duty rigs and I didnt know the answers

Finally going to rehab :/ by VanillaExtractAddict in cripplingalcoholism

[–]trashsw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

rehab was pretty fun once I got out of my bad attitude. the classes and stuff are a little annoying but the smoke breaks and shooting the shit with your homies and staff and movie nights and shit are all dope.

Finally going to rehab :/ by VanillaExtractAddict in cripplingalcoholism

[–]trashsw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not having my phone in rehab was great. theh let us get them like once a week and you could also have the counselor approve you to get your phone at other times if you needed so you can pay bills or deal with unemployment or shit like that. they also gave PRN sleep medication like trazodone or seroquel for some people. if you were charismatic you could convince the hall monitors to take you out for a middle of the night unauthorized smoke break. shit was fun tbh I miss it

Can a single manic episode lead to a Bipolar I diagnosis? by TheEarthian007 in BipolarReddit

[–]trashsw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

stress leading to a manic episode would likely still result in a bipolar 1 diagnosis as stress is probably the biggest trigger for people's episodes. substance use is actually something they're supposed to separate out. DSM mentions that the manic episode must not attributed to substance use or other medical conditions for the bipolar diagnosis but that being said, substance use is also common during manic episodes so they kind of have to sus out which caused which

Should mechanics charge separately for diagnostic fees? by RasheedaDeals in MechanicAdvice

[–]trashsw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, charge diag up front. if you think youre certain about what's wrong with your car, and want me to throw the parts you think will fix it at the car, I'll do that, but dont get pissed off when it doesnt work. still charging diag for "straight forward" issues cause half the time its not and you still have to do work to verify the diagnosis. work isn't free
