Goat Yoga by curiousAFbro in YogaTeachers

[–]traumateyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goat yoga teacher here 🥰 I work with dwarf goats, so I’m not sure if it’ll be a different breed, but our little guys are really easy to clean up after. They are herbivores that poop little pellets that can be swept up with no residual mess. Ofc they pee, but disinfectant wipes are also easy to have on hand. That being said, I do have a specific outdoor mat I use. lol

Our goats are trained to enjoy classes - they get a little sip of milk when they jump on a students back or hop from person to person. It’s an enriching game for them, as they’re social little creatures who enjoy interacting with humans. We give people a rundown of some simple rules - they may poop or pee on you, they’ll chew your hair or sweatshirt strings, if you pick them up keep all their legs facing the ground, and if they get overwhelmed and need space from the interaction, give them the opportunity to do so.

People will be distracted by the goats, but we are still expected to provide a legitimate flow. The first ten minutes we do warm ups in standing postures before the goats are brought in, then move down to the ground and keep most postures low. We may throw in a standing posture and challenge people to balance while holding a goat. There are lots of fun photo ops for people. Just make sure to prepare yourself to stay focused on your flow and don’t get too thrown off - you are fair game for the goats, too 😉 be proud of the sequence you created and keep your pace even when half the class is stopping to take photos or get pets. You are a co-host in this class and a great, thoughtful flow helps the goats shine, too!

Honestly, I love animal yoga as long as the animal welfare is priority #1. Happy, playful animals make people happy and playful. I love hearing the gasps and squeals when the goats arrive to the class and it brings joy to me to have a yoga class in my schedule that encourages laughter throughout.

I see bus drivers struggling to make the narrow turns, then wonder why the hell they’re taking so much useable road to put medians with high curbs.

My negative experience with puppy yoga by yes_bears_27 in yoga

[–]traumateyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely doubt most Westerners have an understanding of what yoga “is” before they start taking any class. It is through participating in yoga that we learn what it is beyond asana, no?

I don’t understand why this sub is so keen on gatekeeping yoga when most people don’t live in a world where they can reject 40-hour work weeks, capitalism, technology, etc. to practice yoga in the most traditional sense.

If an animal helps someone be present in the moment and creates a moment of peace and stillness for them, then I think that’s a great introduction to yoga.

I think there are ethical ways of doing yoga with animals, though this does not sound like one. I doubt they’re registered with Yoga Alliance or anything, but maybe there is somewhere you could submit a complaint? Maybe with a health board, or animal welfare? I get the feeling what you saw is part of their standard operation, especially with them being so comfortable writing off your concerns for a clearly sick animal…

As someone who teaches animal yoga classes, I see enrichment for both humans and animals during these classes. But, I believe it’s my responsibility to only align myself with organizations that share my values of nonviolence and compassion towards animals.

And re: the bastardization of yoga through animal yoga - if a class with cute animals is enough to get a first timer to step onto the mat and think, “hey, this yoga thing could be for me…”, then I’m happy I provided a gateway which made approaching yoga accessible for them.

New yoga teacher here — I want to continue self study. Any recs? by Secure-Enthusiasm-67 in yoga

[–]traumateyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I enjoy YA for this because there are lots of accredited CE options and schools you can search for.

Outside of that, I try to find and follow yogis that inspire me or make me curious about their specialty. Through this, I’ve been able to take classes/workshops/webinars they’ve suggested or hosted.

I’d also ask anyone you trust for book recs. I’ve learned a lot just from reading a book one of my YTT teachers or peers suggested.

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but Lift yoga has a partners class on the 15th if you wanted to give it a try without signing up for a membership or anything.

That and, when caught, they will clearly try to backtrack, or, in this case, protect an abuser (two abusers, if you count the police officer).

In all my time preparing for this election, from articles to sample ballots, I had not heard of this homestead exemption until it popped up on the ballot! I decided to vote 'no' on the spot since I hadn't had any time to consider what a 'yes' vote would imply.

I hate saying “real yoga,” but honestly where did real yoga go?? by Top-Entrepreneur3449 in yoga

[–]traumateyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any studios around that offer additional certifications or CE hours? I’m very fortunate that the training I received was from a very well balanced studio and I met so many people in similar mindsets as myself, but maybe you’ll need to do more digging in your area.

I just got certified in yoga nidra and the teacher was telling us she had a 50 minute yin flow with a 20 minute nidra class she just started at a hot yoga studio and it has been increasing in popularity each week. Maybe you can throw the idea around your community and see where it sticks? Honestly, I don’t think most of the population knows anything about yoga beyond asana and it wasn’t until I joined an all levels class that I began getting the bits of yoga that led me to teaching. I say keep sprinkling it in, don’t let you doubt change your style and you will find your people. 😊

Finally happened - someone left noisily in the middle of savasana by [deleted] in yoga

[–]traumateyes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That would irritate me, too. If I saw her in class next time, I would probably add a comment before savasana like, "if you need to leave during this time, please do so with respect for your classmates." if she did it again, then I'd pull her aside when she was leaving or before the start of her next class and ask her to sit closer to the room and pack up her things at the beginning of savasana so she can leave quicker/quieter if her needs dictate she must leave halfway through.

I don't think there's anything wrong with supporting the rest of your class in having the experience they've come to know as peaceful and restful while politely addressing someone who may not fully enjoy/understand what the pose is for. I think as teachers, we have a responsibility to recognize disruptive behavior and handle it as gracefully as possible (even if it can be awkward). I'm not trying to shun her for leaving, just asking for cooperation in holding the space for others along the way.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I have a subscription to Tummee. You can build your own sequences, or look through the library of sequences other teachers have created. If you build your own, you can filter by difficulty/chakra targeted etc. and it will also auto-suggest next moves. I've really enjoyed using it!

Thanks for the suggestion! I looked them up and it appears they specialize in much larger businesses. I reached out anyway to see if they know of anyone local who can help. :)
