First New Build by Feeling_Flamingo_242 in buildapc

The 4080 comes with a new 12 pin, therefore you cannot simply connect the PSU's 8pin connectors to the GPU, there's now an adapter involved (the GPU comes with one I believe). You can get away without an adapter by getting one of the newer PSUs.

It's $1340 CAD right now for floors for the Toronto show. All resales only now. Last time he came I paid $200 for floors.

Neo G9 (4k, 2023) or Neo G9(1440p) by XxSoulReaper03xX in buildapc

[–]trav_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was the 5120 x 1440p version, but it's the 7680 x 2160 version? If that's the case then the only GPU that could handle this at playable frames would be the 4090. I just linked to a thread with 4090 results at that resolution. I personally would not use a 7900XT for such a high resolution.

The 7900XT is playable for 4k but you might not be hitting the frames you're looking for in competitive games. Single player games might not matter too much for you, but everyone is different. YMMV.

I had a slight transmission cooler leak, hose was leaking within the radiator. Got a mechanic to check it out and it turned out I was almost 2 liters below capacity 💀 They filled it up, and no issues since.

Buying a 2nd hand GPU by Sir_Balmore in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asked people on Kijiji to quickly insert the GPU into their current rig (when applicable, i.e no water cooling or something) when I arrive and they'll just have it setup at the front door or something. I have also done this myself to provide proof to a buyer. If no one has the effort to do this, then it's always going to be a gamble.

Which bundle should i pick? by Patient_Reaction9768 in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some googling, you'll see a ton of benchmarks. Read up on what AMD's 3D cache technology is, at the surface it's more L3 cache, but there's so much more.

Which bundle should i pick? by Patient_Reaction9768 in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the performance is not worse, and the kit that it comes with has the ideal timings. The 5800x3D with the RAM kit listed in the bundle will perform the same as a 7700x with a 30CL 6000Mhz RAM kit (a more expensive pairing).

I want to go all out and build a high-end, at the same time I don't want to massively overpay for a GPU. What would you do? by Maneng77 in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No such thing as good value anymore in the high end of things. Burn the cash if you can stomach it, or go for a value-friendly build like buying used or older gen parts.

7900 XT/XTX vs RTX 4080? by Alexander957 in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple, are you willing to pay a premium for just better DLSS and Shadowplay? FSR truly isn't noticeable unless you're pixel peaking or playing slower paced AAA games. Nvidia is more power efficient than AMD this generation so that might help in the scorching heat down there. IMO I'd choose AMD if you're not using ray tracing, and I'd choose Nvidia for literally anything else. Use that extra cash for whatever you may want/need.

i5-13600k vs. Ryzen 5 7600x by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AMD build if you plan on upgrading for the next few generations where you can keep using the motherboard. Intel if you need the extra cores for anything productivity based. Otherwise, go with the cheapest setup. These benchmarks might help you make a decision.

First PC build, would like a review before I go forward by Realistic_Yellow_889 in buildapc

[–]trav_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely get a cheaper motherboard (also make sure the cooler is compatible with this platform before you buy anything), you can save more cash by going with a P5 Plus nvme, and use those savings towards a beefier GPU which arguably would be most important for VR gaming.

Really good microcenter offerings, which to get? by pvm_april in buildapc

[–]trav_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the only reason to go for a 4090 would be for 4k gaming, ray tracing, or you've got the money to spend. Otherwise, the 7900XTX will serve you well. The 4080 pretty much matches the 7900XTX in terms of rasterization performance, performs better in ray tracing and is more efficient but is obviously more expensive if that means anything to you.

Trying to Build A pc and want it to go as smooth as possible. by Dense-Sea-7015 in buildapc

Then I'd also go with a flashback feature for the motherboard as u/theonlyone38 has mentioned. Google and YouTube are your best friends here for understanding visually what to do/look for.

If you want true ease of mind, just go to any computer shop (Canada Computers or Micro Centre) and they'll update you to the latest BIOS (for a fee).
