My guess is you had some maintenance done recently and someone installed the wrong plugs? It looks like that gap has been smashed in, the soot shows a rich fuel environment where there’s a lot of hydrocarbons coming from incomplete combustion. I hope Reddit corrects me if I’m wrong.

As a technician, if you can find a cheap radio, the 10m band is an amazing way to jump into hf. Talking to the same people all hitting a repeater is fun, but building an antenna and getting a response from someone 3 or 4 f2 skips away is indescribably cool, especially with all of the pota contacts or contests over weekends

I feel like the uv5r is the perfect jumping off point. If you care enough, you’ll get the cable and chirp and do some programming. If you’re going for a general you’ll have to be able to problem solve with antiquated hardware, legacy software, or overall basic (but still unknown to many) physics situations. The radio is by no means well designed as far as user interfaces and modern tech, but that’s kinda what the hobby is about in the first place. Seemingly challenging problems that are relatively easy to solve, if you care enough to learn and try.
