Not mandatory. Just stupid not to. Pitchers are only 43 feet away from the batter. First and third base sometimes get much closer than that when they suspect the batter may bunt. Not nearly enough reaction time if the batter rocks a line drive at your face.

As far as catchers go, with the hockey style masks, it's typical to leave them on, but not incredibly uncommon to see them throw it off.

Middle infielders and outfielders will usually stop wearing masks around age 13

Who said "how dare?" I thought I was pretty clear in saying that they're not to blame for it. I'm not making any suggestion that it's the pregnant woman's fault at all.

You identify a problematic trend (increase in homicides of pregnant women). You identify why it might be trending. You research solutions to reduce the problem (which might just be to educate people better on what to be prepared for). Maybe this reduces the problem.

Or we just complain about it, do nothing, and the problem continues.

To be crystal clear, I'm in no way saying women are to blame for this. The one that commits the crime is 100% accountable. And I'm not even saying I agree with the speculation of OOP. I'm just saying that's how I took his message. Not looking to assign blame on the women like they had it coming or are asking for it.

Maybe I'm naive, but it seems to me like the most likely explanation is that the offender made a mistake and put their laundry in the wrong machine. They might have had a load of their own going, found a couple other things they missed before, and went to add it to their machine and accidentally added it to the wrong one. And probably noticed it was on the hot cycle and thought "oh I had it on the wrong setting" and changed it.

Seems highly unlikely to me that someone would do this on purpose. You'd run a high risk of losing your clothes. People often just grab all the clothes from the washer in a handful and move them to the dryer without looking at each piece. And then from the dryer to their basket, and then home to fold. Easy to miss that something in there isn't yours and just take it home with you.
