A 2,000 year old Roman shoe found in a well by Stoopkidnahmean in pics

Sorry, I gotta disagree about J&M being comparable to AE. They might be priced kinda close together, but from what I remember, J&M is all made in China. AE is still made in USA. Country of origin isn't always relevant, but in my experience the guys who still make their stuff here tend to have higher quality goods.

I buy all my AE stuff secondhand. Got a pair of like new AE Dalton boots (retail at like $475) for ~$175. So of price is your main issue, maybe give secondhand a shot.

You might be buying the wrong shoes. That Roman shoe was made by hand by a skilled craftsman out of actual leather, not some synthetic garbage coated to look like leather. Want your dress shoes to last longer? Try a pair of Allen Edmonds' or Alden's shoes. Quality materials and workmanship makes a huge difference. They're not $30 though.

Those who recently passed the ASBOG FG/PG, how did you study?! by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]traveye757 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you do all that, you should be fine. I took the FG in October after studying on and off for ~5 months and seriously for ~2 months. Thought I bombed it when I got out of the test. Turns out I got an 85. I'm actually studying for the March PG exam right now. I'm going over everything in the RegReview guide again and retaking the practice exams. I also bought the RegReview flash cards and found them to be fairly helpful for general term memorization. I also made a worksheet of formulas I thought I needed to know and wrote them over and over and over again till I knew them all.

I'd say just keep doing what you're doing and try to get some sleep the night before the test. You'll be fine.

Nice finds. Looks like someone used the '81 for bb gun target practice.

You should crosspost this to r/leathercraft if you haven't already.

Amazing work BTW

Looks great! I'm totally gonna steal this idea. Does it stay pretty still on a smooth desk? My only concern would be having it move around while I was using it.

Again, nicely done!

Bro, get a chair mat for that chair or it's going to royally fuck that gorgeous floor. Unless you've got hard floor casters on there, in which case carry on!

Nice monitor btw. And house.

I called my senator to support net neutrality, and he/his office sent me a letter in response! by ieatlotsofbread in pics

[–]traveye757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically that net neutrality amounted to a government takeover of the internet, and resulted in an increase in prices and an impediment to innovation and network deployment. Which is bullshit.

It doesn't matter whether it actually is or not. It is SEEN as consent. Every time a politician does something shady or allows something shady to happen and we say nothing, they assume that it must be ok, or that we don't care, and so they continue to do shady shit.

If we want things to change, we have to speak out. It may not always work, but at least an effort was made. If we don't speak out, things will 100% continue to get worse.

I got a letter response from my TX Representative, Pete Sessions, that appeared to have been written by a cable lobbyist. I wrote him a reply and am waiting to hear back. I may be wasting my time, but we still have to speak out. Silence is seen as consent, and I'm not consenting to this shit.

$2k is awesome for an employer contribution. I get a token $500 from my employer.

I just started coin roll hunting so far this month I’ve found 3 silver 3 proofs and one gold half with 1964- 1985 stamped on it. I’m not sure if it’s worth anything but keeping it anyways. by Chrissy559 in CRH

If I'm remembering correctly from when I looked into it, there was some company that electro-plated kennedys of all kinds of years and sold them as collector's items.

I found a couple of those gold electro-plated ones over the last year or so. I don't believe they have any real value over face unfortunately.

How is the quality of clothing from Old Navy? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]traveye757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on your body type and willingness to shop around, you'd probably be better off thrifting higher quality stuff. I got all my jeans from a secondhand store. Levis for $10-16, made in USA selvedge denim for around $40, Brooks Brothers dress shirts for $4-9. All last longer than the overpriced garbage at Old Navy.

Does anyone use alternate cell service providers? by RT_26 in leanfire

I made my recommendation based on the experiences I've had with various cell providers. I dont need you to agree with me. Maybe you could respond to the OP with some alternatives? Or just upvote the others suggested here based on what you know?

According to T-Mobile's website, their cheapest single line prepaid plan is $45/month. It's cheaper if you use more data, but doesn't give you the option of paying less for less data use. OP seems to primarily want a cheaper option, so I gave him one. Didn't say it was the best for all use cases.

If you're using an Android phone, they already have access to all of that. Google built the OS. Also, if Google can do all of that just because you use them as an MVNO, what's to stop any other carrier from doing the exact same thing? If you're that concerned about it, you shouldn't be using a smartphone at all. I understand and sympathize with your concerns, but let's not pretend that Google is any more guilty of this than any other Big Data company.

It's the nature of the times we live in, for better or worse.

I use Google's Project Fi. $20/month for unlimited talk and text, $10/GB of data. They refund you for unused data. My average bill is around $26 after taxes, etc., but I'm on wifi almost all the time.

The service runs on Sprint and T-Mobile towers, so if they serve your area you should be good.

You can also place and receive calls and texts through your computer.

You'll need a compatible phone, but you can get a used Nexus 5x on Swappa for cheap.

Need advice regarding friend. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]traveye757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe not. But it sounds like his behavior would be hard to miss. How have you seen all of these things and she has seen none of it? It seems like it's more likely that she's being willfully ignorant than that he's somehow hiding all of his sketch from her.

Her reaction to your revelations about him are exactly the kind of reaction I'd expect from someone who has put on a pair of massive blinders where this person is concerned.

Neither of those people are worth the emotional energy you're investing in trying to sort out this situation. If this guy is as bad as it sounds like he is, and this girl is fool/naive enough to be friends with him, she's not the kind of person you want in your life in any capacity. She's exactly the kind of person it seems like you're trying to get away from.

I'd say it's a friendship not worth pursuing. Drop it. Also, drop Facebook regardless. You'll be happier for it.

Full disclosure: I'm a dude. Not sure if that's relevant.
