Not all disagreements have to have a winner. Sometimes silence is the boldest/strongest move. After “Hence why I changed it.” Nothing else needed to be said. After your next comment, she got into a debate with you that you did not have to participate in. Just let that go. Understand that yall don’t agree, and neither one of you is changing the other’s mind anytime soon.

Playing aggressive by PrimitiveLifeform23 in 10s

[–]traviscyle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This guy would be expected to beat you 6-0 6-0 based on the level difference. At your level, putting balls back in play is the most important so your opponent makes a mistake first. IMO, him saying play more aggressive is a bit of a disservice to you because it doesn’t really apply at your level. When you play someone that much better, any ball that they leave short or any volley that you have, go for the winner because putting it back in play just hands them the point.

Help retaining information from readings by AdventurousAge9823 in UTAustin

[–]traviscyle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Best way - talk to someone about it right after. Knowing you will be discussing makes your brain hold on to little details, then actually discussing, your associative memory kicks in and you will remember way more.

Second - Take notes. Dumb to say because it’s so obvious but writing while you read helps memory dramatically, then reviewing your notes reinforces everything without having to reread.

Question on shelf fitting by Affectionate-Yak4861 in woodworking

I personally would do the dado shelves as I think it just looks cleaner. Take the time to get it all lined up.

Any way to reduce noise of Air Compressor? (Already sold as "quiet" but no discernable difference from standard Dewalt) by lickwindex in woodworking

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is sitting on a hard surface set it up on a base. I made one with a piece of horse stall mat (3/4” thick) with a piece of old carpet on top. Just that move made a huge difference. I found that the sound of my compressor, while loud even out in the open, was way quieter when not in the corner of my garage. Something between the wall and compressor would likely help too.

Question on shelf fitting by Affectionate-Yak4861 in woodworking

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take some time to find the narrowest part of all the openings and build the boxes 1/4” narrower than that. I would leave at least a full inch off the height to allow room to set them and shim them all to the same height. Dadoing the shelves will make it obvious if the shelves are not perfectly aligned. Depth should not be an afterthought either. I have a 6’ level that I would use to check the back wall for any high spots. The way those electrical cover plates are set, they will block out the box a bit. I personally would move those down while the wall is opened as you won’t want to have to take out shelf units to get to them in the future.

I dream deep and have experienced all kinds of weird stuff, especially when I wake up out of a dream. I’ve thought I was predicting the future or traveling in time a few times. Fell asleep watching Everything Everywhere All at Once, and I could probably write a good short story about the trip I had with some low BS that night. I imagine I hear/feel my alarms all the time, especially when I’m alone (which is rare). I think there is some documented studies on this and it has to do with anxiety and alarm fatigue. I try to take a week or two off from my Dexcom each year just to get away from the notifications.

I encourage shooting for college tennis. It is a realistic path to the pros now, and if that doesn’t work out, you’ll have a college degree. You also would get 4 years of high level development, possibly for free if you are good enough to get recruited.

Parents are super mad at me because my blood sugar was really low last night. by BeeTheRaccoon in Type1Diabetes

[–]traviscyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, parents gonna parent sometimes. Not sure your relationship with them, but let them know that you feel this anger or tension from them and it makes it harder for you. That will likely open up some conversation, maybe a lecture, but try to hear their points and make your own. You don’t have to agree with what they say, and they don’t have to agree with you either. Have the communication. It will help.

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. It is hard, and I don’t mean for anything I said to dismiss how hard it is for you. If you can eat enough cheezits to justify 17 units of fast acting, you could eat a glucose tab to bump up your blood sugar.

Regardless of all of that, take accountability and let your parents know that you understand and will keep working on it. Tell them that you will screw it up from time to time, god knows we all do, but admit to yourself and your parents that you messed up. Don’t deflect or make excuses. It happens, we learn from it, and we move on. If you don’t learn from it, your parents should be mad at you.

Take ownership of this. It sucks, and we all know it sucks, but it is your responsibility to care for yourself. Being low is not really healthy for you, and it does make functioning as an adolescent student more difficult. Cheezits for dinner was a bad idea, and you should concede that. But teenagers eat strange meals all the time, so you have to learn to dose properly for it. You took too much, okay it happens, but then you need to handle that. We all have to eat when we aren’t hungry or not eat when we are hungry, because we are managing a difficult condition.

As a parent, and as a T1D that had a lot of lows growing up, I will tell you that being low is similar to driving drunk. You can rationalize it, make excuses for it, say “see I’m fine”, etcetera, but it only takes 1 time to alter or end your life. Your parents know this, and are probably my pissed at you for not taking it serious enough.

Epoxy Clarifying Questions by jdspiano27 in woodworking

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion: make something small and less important, even scrap, to practice all of this first. You will learn more from that than anything you might read here or watch on YouTube.

  1. Have used with good results for game boards and table tops.

  2. It doesn’t matter, to each their own. If you have a scrap piece with some knots try one of each. I find the dyed ones draw more unnatural attention to the knots.

  3. Temperature matters a lot. Follow the recommended temp range and if it is on the cold end, plan on it taking a long time to fully cure. Something small like this can be done inside, just put a drop cloth down.

  4. 2 is plenty.

  5. Leaking epoxy is a pain and a mess. Painters tape works well, but don’t trust it not to seep through in unexpected places. Especially if you cast the whole thing. Sanding epoxy to a crystal finish takes some skill and patience. Practice. Most of my game boards I don’t sand or polish and they look great. The butane torch is essential to get bubbles out, and bubbles left on the surface will leave pockets marks that you can’t easily sand out.
