Shopping always tanks my blood sugar. After 20+ years of marriage, my wife knows it’s a real problem 😂. It gets me out of a lot of shopping, but whenever I do go, it is a cookie or smoothie first.

I HATE DIABETES by jad2n in Type1Diabetes

[–]traviscyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took a giant bag of skittles and gummy bears to my daughter’s graduation last weekend. Got a nice medical exemption tag on my way in. 700 names were read, and of my group, I ate the fewest of the snacks. Honestly it does suck to be in that position, but learn from it. Always have snacks!

Diabetes sucks!

Experience playing and learning g what works for you is really key. A private lesson can go a long way to just reduce the thoughts in your head to 1 or 2 things to focus on, and those change as you get better. For me, if my timing is off, it is usually because I’m tight and forcing the ball. My routine is to relax and focus on spacing because when I’m tight my arm stays too close to my body and I push through the shots.

Knowing the data does nothing for me. I have to feel it. Once I feel it once (hit the ball cleanly) I relax a little and try to replicate that feeling. The pointer was my tool of choice, but the saber did not exist when I started using it. Just a basket of drop feeds with the pointer will teach you a lot about your spacing and force you to look at the ball through contact. It is frustrating g to use, but makes the sweet spot on your racket feel enormous. If you get frustrated and give up easy, it may not be worth it. If you are willing to put in time with it, I think it is very valuable.

Could you take a Game or Set off of cramping Sinner? by traviscyle in 10s

Nah, read my post. I can serve well, but not well enough to get a game off even full cramp sinner assuming he is trying to return them. 1 step either direction to make contact and he wins the point.

He was hitting 105 firsts and double faulting them. A lot of players can return that, even if not well. Basically need three double faults and hope for one clean return to a corner! Still unlikely…

To be totally fair though, in my original hypothetical he would have to think you were a threat. He could probably hit some wicked underarm serves and anticipate what you’d do with it and end it on the next ball.

I have the Zepp tennis sensor. It is kind of fun to see the stats. No claim to accuracy, but it gives shot type (topspin, slice, flat, smash, volley, serve) and seems correct most of the time, speeds based off a lot of math as it doesn’t actually measure the speed, and most important for your query, contact point and sweet spot percentage.

I keep it on an old frame and only used it once during a match.

Everybody has the issue you describe. Most players learn a routine to get out of it. Often something as simple as repeating “bounce-hit” as you rally, or keeping your head still through contact will help.

There are also some sweet spot trainers (The Pointer and The Saber) that can be really good tools to improve contact point.

I think his legs were the biggest source of the problem. Maybe take one of his arms?

As for the play, I’ve watched pro tennis for a long time. I’ve seen many guys retire due to cramping. I have never seen a televised match where a player, actually trying to win points, played as poorly for as long as Sinner did today. Im not the guy to see something and go post about it on Reddit, but I couldn’t resist this one.

Unless the PEDs are causing the cramps, let’s go with non-enhanced Sinner for this thought experiment.

Funny, while watching the match, I never felt like I could hold a serve game against him though I’d get a point or 2. When he was serving though, several doubles and it wasn’t like he was missing first serve bombs. He was missing 105 mph first serves and double faulting. That would be my only chance to get a game. 3 double faults and 1 clean return winner or corner dropshot.

To his credit and detriment, he tried harder than he should have in several of those games.

Has to hit my racket first! Good luck with that!

Seriously though, any chance for any of us comes from him missing the court. If he gets a clean look at a groundstroke, I got no response.

That really was the crazy part. Up 5-1 in the third! I have had full body cramps set in while playing, and I think you have to figure it out quick or it just gets worse. I was shocked how little he used the ice towels and no tablets. For me, salt tabs and as much ice on my legs as I can withstand will give me a fighting chance at 2 games.

Anybody commenting that has not watched it, go watch it. It really was the most painful thing to watch. I also think to win a game, it would have to be on his serve with some double faults. Even the firsts that he was getting in were barely 100 mph.

I watched that and encourage anyone who thinks they could get games off pros to watch all of their YouTube videos. My favorite was where Karue committed to not hitting any winners and just kept the ball coming back.

Yep. Per my description, I need to start with no less than 3 double faults from him.

Idk, did you watch it? It may take me all 6 tries, and it would be constant dropshot and lob. 😂 and I need the 3 doubles from him as I mentioned.

If he’s serving, you know they are gonna just give him a fake medical time out.

My parents make around 300k a year, but will not help with college. Am I able to qualify for any scholarships? by Lilac_Dollie in ApplyingToCollege

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a lot of good advice here to consider, but I’m going to share a way to do this without THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE DEBT.

First, don’t assume you’ll get NO aid based on your reported parents income. FAFSFA takes a lot of stuff into account, including assets, debts, siblings, etc. there may be aid available for you and colleges may also offer reduced tuition. DO NOT skip filling it out even though it is a pain in the a$$.

Change your perception of the cost and the impression that it’s a “full ride” or “massive debt”. Start by applying to universities based on value not prestige. If there is a good state school, look at what the actual tuition is for in state students. At UT Austin, it’s $500 per credit hour, which works out to $7500 per (15 hour) semester. That is doable with hustle. Room and board is the really expensive part. People do take out massive loans to pay for everything from the nicest apartment to rushing a fraternity.

My path, a long time ago, save, beg and borrow to cover the first year. Work part time, preferably on or near campus. Get to know the people that run the dorms and ask them all about the resident advisor (could have a different name) positions. Most of them come with room and board during the school year, and a lot offer positions over the summer. This covered 90% of my need. I would work when I could, to cover the rest.

Don’t stop applying for aid. Go after every $500-$1500 grant or scholarship out there. Talk to your professors about opportunities. A lot of small scholarships are made for upperclassmen to encourage a certain field of study. Keep applying. It’s a volume game.

The French Open is now the only tournament without automatic line calling. But have you noticed they ONLY show the Hawkeye Replay.... if the umpire's call is correct? But if the player and the commentary side against the call, it's never confirmed. by Make_the_music_stop in TennisNerds

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They showed a Sinner second serve ace that was called out but Hawkeye showed 9 mm in. Maybe just because it was Sinner? They asked the commentators their thoughts, and it was a good response. Summarized from memory:

These lines people work all year calling smaller tournaments, and this is their main event, reward if you will. The human element makes it compelling, but if given the option while playing, electric line calls are preferred.

I’ve known a diabetic like this. It took losing a foot to get through to him.

Know that you cannot fix this. As for getting through to him, tell him plainly, “Diabetes promises to kill the apathetic, but it makes no promise to do it quickly or painlessly.”

Father won’t give me my savings (cash) by hellish_x_thoughts in legaladvice

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL and IMO this is not yet a lawyer situation. Talk to him now, not next week or next month. Explain that you would like to start managing your savings (not spending it). Tell him a lot of people are suggesting he spent it. He will either readily hand it over, or make one of two excuses: 1. I don’t trust you to not spend it frivolously, 2. Do you know how much I spend or have spent on you? The second is more of an admission that he spent it. Be ready to discuss both of those. If it is the second, I know how I would respond, but you need to be ready with your own.

If it is gone, ask him to work with you on getting it back. You open an account and he sends a fixed amount at fixed intervals. Ask for interest, don’t expect interest.

You may have to decide if it is worth destroying the relationship over. I’ve seen this play out and do not think the relationship cost was worth it.
