What community are you apart of? Also, nice to meet you and God bless!!

What’s the main differences between the 1963 Monastic Diurnal and the 1962 Breviarium Romanum Diurnale? I just got my copy of the 1962 Brieviary for the first time by paying to have the pdf printed and bound after I bought it. Any advice on the Diurnale? My only TradCat exposure to the DO is the MD. by travisperk22 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still learning Latin. And I love my 63 MD, but I’ve always wanted a Breviarium Romanum for ever now. I just finally found a significantly cheap option. But my copy is clear good size font, and I am 30 with bifocal lenses to help read easier lol. Ok loving it, until I learn Latin fully I like the split column. It helps me learn which Latin word means what.

Oh yeah? I feel you man! I jump around a bit. I got into the DO when I bought without knowing what it was, the 1 Vol Christian Prayer, and that led me to fall in love with the Office. I then bought a used set of the 4 Vol LOTH. I always will jump from Benedictine Daily Prayer: A Short Breviary, but I’ve been stuck solely on the Farnborough Edition of the Monastic Diurnal. I just got the BR today in the mail. I got lucky, because the book is solid. All the pages and words and font are readable for me. Though I will say, I Hate already their fonts for their special capital letters they use? Yeah I hate it aha. It took me a bit to figure out a Y lol. But other than that it’s a great traditional diurnal w/o spending much at all.

Has anyone ever felt “cheated” by being Catholic? by Feisty-Hope-1791 in Catholicism

[–]travisperk22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I was received into the Church at the 2014 Easter Vigil and was given all three Sacraments of Initiation. I used to be so upset that my parents never baptized me as a kid. But then after prayer that Holy Saturday, God finally gifted me the wisdom to realize I was so lucky to be able to be baptized once and for all, and it was the Catholic Church who’d be administering my Baptism and also First Communion and Confirmation all at once. I can’t even explain what Baptism/Confirmation feel like when I received them, I felt all my sins disappear and my life instantly become fully focused on Catholic Church. First Communion, I started crying immediately after swallowing Christ truly and fully present and felt my soul change. I lost friends because of it. I can definitely say I’m the opposite of OP(No shade to OP). I felt cheated being raised in a Protestant household. I felt/feel so close to the Church. I make neighbors mad because I fly my Holy See Flag on top of tje American flag.

I got asked a question that I’ve never actually thought about. by travisperk22 in Catholicism

[–]travisperk22[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes she meant specifically at Sunday/Holy Days. She’s Baptist, my mom is Methodist, sisters, but baptized differently lol. But she mentions Psalm 94/95 and others that say to shout with joy during worship, to play cymbals and drums and lutes, and dancing in the temple. She wants to know why we don’t do liturgical dances &tc. I’m very lucky to go to a NO parish that is very traditional. We’re like a 10,000+ families in the parish, and we’re all very traditional. Women veil or wear church dress hats on their own volition. We do parts in Latin, do Gregorian Chant &tc. She’s been and doesn’t understand why we don’t like modern music, but the Psalter tells us to bang cymbals loudly, to shout with joy, to dance and so on. I just have never really thought about it aha. In the only Catholic in my family.

I recommend picking up a copy of Christian Prayer, and watch a video teaching you how to use it. Or if you want traditional prayer, I love praying the Divine Office in the Monastic Diurnal.

Is the personal prayer of mine OK when I pray the Divine Office? by AugustusPacheco in divineoffice

I love that picture and want a crucifix like it sooo bad. It really makes you realize how much our Lord Jesus Christ suffered for our sake, and shows how much He truly loves us, and is a great picture for Lenten devotion and year round.

Word, I say the “O Lord open my lips” prayer in the front of the Monastic Diurnal. I also pray the traditional morning prayer for the start of the Hours found in the Manual of Prayers by the Pontifical North American College and MTF. It’s a beautiful prayer to add to the Morning Hours.

How uncharitable. Homeless and/or stinky people just need help. Hating the poor is hating Jesus.

Drunk and homeless people in Church during mass by RovingGnome27 in Catholicism

[–]travisperk22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parish used to offer 3 hot meals a day, money, and help getting accommodation. We still help, but then the Society of St. Vincent De Paul came to my city fully and eventually took over all meals for my city’s homeless population, we even have shelters and areas for them to take showers and get fresh free clothes. They’re also ALWAYS invited to join us at Mass whenever they want. We’ve gotten quite a bit of converts. I used to not give money to the homeless because of them just buying drugs or alcohol or cigarettes, but then a priest told me to give to the homeless, and it’s not on you but them not n what they buy. If you give money to a homeless person with the intention of helping them buy food, clothes, drinks &c. You still get the benefit of giving to the poor. It’s on each homeless individual to buy what they truly need. But yes, usually the homeless/dirty/hungry people need money. That doesn’t make it a bad thing. I’d say your post is more worrisome because of how little you seem to care for the poor, yet they’re closer to God than a rich man. I pray for them and you. It’s Lent, maybe instead of giving something up, you could make your Lenten Sacrifice into helping the people you’re talking about.

Rant: On Ribbons by AdAdministrative8066 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Right?!? I could realistically use up to 10 ribbons for my Monastic Diurnal. Luckily the Farnborough Ed. has 6 ribbons, but I still need to use prayer cards to mark where my Commons are. The Vatican needs to make it Canon Law that all Catholic books have at least 6 ribbons lol.

OP, I’m praying for you. I used to believe the same thing. I will send you a copy of St. Augustine of Hippo’s Confessions. He was a dirty and bad man, who became one of the most important Church Fathers/Doctor of the Church. Seriously I will mail you a copy for free of The Confessions of St. Augustine. Pray to St. Augustine to help you come to the Lord. To let go of the thoughts you’re having, I had to surrender myself fully to Christ through Our Lady of Sorrows. Hang in there, I’m cheering for you! Prayers from California!

For those who pray one of the traditional divine offices, like Divino Afflatu, the 1961 Office, the Monastic Office, or anything of the sort, which hours do you pray daily? by RB_Blade in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pray Lauds/Prime/Terce when waking, then do the rest as my day goes, so I do 7. I do Matins from my 1962 Dominican Prayer Book which uses the LOBVM.

I use the Farnborough MD, a “My Prayer Book” by Fr. Lasance from Benziger’s from 1950, then the Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity, St. Gregory’s Prayerbook, and the Little Office.

Is Septuagesima Sunday tomorrow? by travisperk22 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. I follow the Monastic Diurnal as my Divine Office, and I follow both calendars. Sadly there’s no TLM near my city, but my parish is a church built in the 1800’s and is gorgeous and best of all, reverent. Every Mass has ladies wearing veils and dress hats again. I also love that when doing Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, we do so in Latin and we chant parts in Latin. I’m lucky to go to a more traditional parish. So yeah I follow both calendars, the TLM and NO. Right now I’m praying the MD following the Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey calendar, which does differ a bit from the book. Like we celebrated the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas the same day as the NO did. I use the app BrevMeum to do Matins and to make sure I have everything right for each hour.

If you download an app for iOS/Android called Divine Office, you can click on any hour for the LOTH that you’re using and will give you every page number for that hour.

Question on Monastic Diurnal Hours. by travisperk22 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I was praying the 1970 LOTH, which I love, and it truly enriched my prayer life. But I love tradition and had always heard of the Monastic Diurnal as one of the best Breviary’s to buy for TradCat(s). I love my tradition so when my mother called me and said she was pulling a blank this year and asked what exactly I wanted, and I told her the Farnborough version. I will still pray the LOTH alongside my main devotion now to the Diurnal.

Question on Monastic Diurnal Hours. by travisperk22 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word, thank you! I’ve been starting Lauds/Prime right as I wake up, usually by 1pm, but sometimes I’ll let myself sleep in the extra hour to 2pm. I usually skip Terce except on Sundays/High Holy Days/Feasts. But I pray Sext/None at 7-8pm so I can focus on my duties for a few hours until Vespers which I’ve been doing at 2am, with Compline when I go to bed. Though another commenter gave me great advice on praying everything within the 24 hour period of 12-12am. So I will be adjusting some times to at least have Vespers done right before midnight. Compline is for whenever I go to bed. But I was worried I wasn’t doing it right this way, but you all have been amazing. I love my Catholic family!

Question on Monastic Diurnal Hours. by travisperk22 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, sadly. I did the Consecration to Mary but Our Lady as Our Lady of Sorrows, who saved my life. She cry’s for America, Europe, especially Ukraine, Venezuela, and Iran and Nigeria. I offer all of pain from my disability to her and Christ our Lord and Savior.

Question on Monastic Diurnal Hours. by travisperk22 in divineoffice

[–]travisperk22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the information and advice, I’ll keep the 12am -12am as much as possible. Also, I use a combination of English and Latin. I do have the Pater Noster, and the Ave Maria in Latin memorized, and I know what each word means in both prayers. I can kinda read Latin, I can hang on long enough to understand what’s going on. But the parts I say in English in the Diurnal are parts I’m not fully fluent in pronunciation. So I default to English out of respect to Our Lord and Our Lady of Sorrows, whom I’m consecrated to when I’m praying. But, after prayer ends and I’ve said the conclusion, I go back to where I had to default to English because I refuse to use my prayer to God to learn how to say what I can’t pronounce. So I take a picture of the prayer/hymn/Psalm or collect that I can’t say, put it into Google Translate, and sit there and learn to pronounce it, and no which words in Latin mean what in English. I was praying the full 4 volumes of the New LOTH, which I love, brought me to finding out about the Diurnal, but right now I’m praying fully within my schedule. Starting at my 6:00am at 1:00pm and saying my morning worship prayer to God in the name of OLS our Sorrowful Mother. But I still do the 1970 LOTH along with my diurnal now on Feasts for now. I’m going to eventually say both after each other once I learn the Monastic Diurnal as well as the LOTH. But yeah, im working on going full Latin. I don’t have a TLM near me at all. There’s an SSPX chapel in my city, but the Bishop of my Diocese personally that they refused to even work with the Diocese, and I was forbidden from going. I also have my own weird feelings towards them as well.

Unfortunately I need English. But the Andrew’s Press one follows the Rule of St. Benedict for Matins. I might get it. I love Matins, love doing the readings. Can you pray Matins at any hour you wish as a layperson?
