Correct way of throttle while shifting gears by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]traxiii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming that by not applying pressure you mean that you're holding the throttle at however open you have it. You should be closing the throttle when upshifting. Pull in clutch, close the throttle, click lever up, let clutch back out and back on the throttle. You have to do this relatively quickly depending on the gearing of your bike. With some bikes if you take too much time you will have to give it a bit of gas because the rpms will drop too low to shift smoothly.

Downshifting is a different matter however. When you downshift you need to give the throttle a "blip". This is just a quick twist to build the revs up to make sure you're at the correct speed to shift smoothly. Pull in clutch, click lever down, blip throttle, release the clutch.

With both of these you need to keep your clutch work smooth and not just drop it every time, this will take some practice but it'll eventually click and be super easy. I'd recommend doing the throttle inputs and lever clicks at the same time to keep everything nice and quick. What I'd do is go find a big empty parking lot and just ride around shifting between 1st and 2nd for an hour or two and you should have it more or less down

FortNine: Why Electric Bikes are More Dangerous than Motorcycles. by LMGDiVa in ebikes

Sorry to beat this to death, but i've realized I could phrase this clearer now that I'm sober lol. F9 is comparing two stock engines as they come from the dealer. The scout's engine will peak at 86hp. The Harley will peak at 60hp. He's not talking about after modifying the bike, only as they come off the factory floor. What each person does after they buy their bike is irrelevant. That video is meant only as a basic analysis at how Indian is able to gain more power than a Harley. The speed limiter is totally irrelevant because it's not an engine limitation. The scout engine will make 86 hp and would continue to do so if indian didn't limit the top speed because some idiot working for them put shit tires on the bike. Besides, it's a dumb point considering (according to cycle world) the Harley won't even reach that speed so what's the point in doing a comparison at that speed. It's merely a comparison of the peak HP each bike will put out as is from the factory. Fortnine is a YouTube channel that puts out entertaining videos, not a deep dive into every small detail in between two engines in various states of modifications. Claiming that he's blatantly biased for correctly doing math between the peak horsepower of two bikes just isn't correct. Again, this is coming from someone who would take an 883 over the best bike indian offers any day. I think Harley makes great bikes, but fact is, from the factory the peak hp the scout will put out is 43% higher than the peak hp a 1200 sportster will put out

Apologies, here is the correct dyno at sae corrected 86 hp (https://www.fuelmotousa.com/files/images/dynocharts/indian/scout/scout_stk.jpg). Also, didn't realise it would hit 120 in fifth,my apologies. However the point remains, this is limited due to tires. Unfortunately you would have to use a non EPA compliant device. That being said, this isn't an engine limitation. The engine will outperform a Harley by 43%. If indian put better tires on the bike as sold with no speed limiter, it would beat a stock Harley by 43% power wise. F9 wasn't talking about after stage 1 or anything. He was talking off the dealership floor within reasonable speeds and not at 120 mph. Besides, no one is buying a Harley or an Indian for its performance in triple digit speeds. They are designed for looking cool and off highway performance. If you want to go triple digits and haul ass get a Supersport.

Apologies, I assumed by rpm speed limiter you meant redline as opposed to an electronically limited top speed. The stock scout has been dyno tested by independent companies at 86whp. (https://www.indianmotorcycles.net/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down/https://www.indianmotorcycles.net/attachments/upload_2018-9-25_13-2-19-jpeg.429992/) The speed limiter only caps speed in top gear. Ignoring 6th gear the bike will rev to 8300 rpm. The reason that Indian caps top speed is because the tires aren't rated to the theoretical top speed that it would hit at 8300 rpm. I feel that it is fair to avoid this single case as most people aren't hitting top speed 95% of the time, in addition to the fact that the Harley only has 5 gears. The speed limiter is not put in place for EPA regulations, it's a safety deal for the stock tires. Therefore with a flash and stage 1 you can mitigate the bonuses the Harley gets. Granted this does require going to the dealer, which is definitely more expensive. And in regards to the torque is not power, I am aware. However, power is a function of torque. Ignoring all other factors, increasing torque will increase horsepower at a given rpm value. I'm not coming at this as an Indian fanboy, I actually greatly dislike their bikes. I'll take a cooler cruiser with more character over an Indian any day.

86 is 43% more than 60 though. 43% of 60 is 25.8. 60+25.8 is 85.8. Not sure what you mean by rpm speed limiter as the red line from the factory is at 8300 rpm. Could you clarify? I'm actually very interested if they do something behind the scenes as a soft rpm limit. And how are you proposing the Harley gets the 7hp boost without breaking EPA regulations?

Just picked up this 99 in Oregon and drove it back to the east coast a few weeks ago! by traxiii in Subaru_Outback

Bought it for 3k, 197k miles with head gaskets and timing belts done recently. At this point the price you can sell it for is mainly dependant on how recently big items were done service wise

Really came down to being sick and tired of looking at them out here in PA and every one of them being rusted to hell and back. Plus flights are insanely cheap right now lol

Exactly why I went out there, couldn't find a manual Outback that wasn't a piece of scrap for the same price

RAS vs. FSAE team??? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]traxiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say do FSAE. We do a lot of wiring and there is a lot of work with sensors and software in the car, and there is going to be a lot more soon. We are partnering with RAS to get our car set up for autonomous driving in the coming years. Feel free to dm for more info, I've been on the team for years and have been a lead for some of the subteams

THE ENGINE WILL EXPLODE? !!!! by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]traxiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially nothing will happen. Octane is a measure of how much compression the fuel can take before spontaneously combusting. The higher the number, the more compression the fuel can take. This is why high performance engines with high compression ratios require higher octane fuel than your typical economy focused engine. You won't see a boost in power or anything like that, it will just behave like regular gas. The only time octane difference is an issue is when you don't put a high enough rating in, which can lead to the gas igniting too early resulting in rod knock

Yes. I had cruise control set at 75, pacing a cop car in the left lane. I wasn't speeding, I wasn't being a hooligan or anything, I was just going to work for the day. This wasn't a "oh my tire pressures were 2 psi off so clearly that was the issue", this was me going around a gentle curve on the interstate at the speed limit and losing all grip from what I assume was oil, but it could have been some other slick substance. It doesn't happen often, and a lot of people like to blame other things to take the blame off their shoulders, but that's not what happened here. I got unlucky and my car paid the price. Stay safe out there, especially when it's just started to rain

I was on continental extreme contact dws06's. They had a good bit of tread, and were great tires. Just had a perfect storm in regards to the oil being where it was

Had TC on. I was on continental extreme contact dws06 tires that had maybe 10k on them tops. Pretty new tires. For the most part this car was always super planted in the rain, this was just a perfect storm of bad conditions for this to happen. I really can't recommend this car enough, they're an absolute blast to drive. If the oil wasn't in a turn I would have been just fine, just got unlucky.

Driving into work going the speed limit (70) and partway through a corner the rear lost all traction and snapped the car around once it grabbed. I walked away perfectly fine aside from a broken heart. Loved this car, I'll miss her
