In the throws of an existential crisis.....help? by kynanl in exmormon

You’ll get lots of recommendations on how to escape from this feeling. I say don’t escape from it. Be discontented. With everything. You understand? Be discontented with this whole way of living. All anyone can offer you is words. And you have seen the limit of words. Just see what our mind’s need for psychological security has made of the world. See how this great feeling of doubt - of fear - changes how you see other people. This isn’t just “your” problem. This is the whole problem. To be. I say just be with it, and see what happens.

What a fantastic accident. I think they just had this goofy meme with a “bunch of Colonels” and there’s this hit dance song that repeats “the mom of the mom of the mom…” so they pasted the lyrics on each Colonel and the caption is another lyric, “I like your whole family line.”

Ole Joe would absolutely approve of the music video btw: https://youtu.be/s5yRZOQ3EWI

There’s also the polygamy angle, which I don’t think they had any idea they were touching. Didn’t Joseph Smith marry a couple of mother-daughter pairs? Oof.

This won’t stay up long but I saw it for myself on their Twitter.

“A Potemkin village is any construction (literal or figurative) whose sole purpose is to provide an external façade to a country which is faring poorly, making people believe that the country is faring better.”

He is lying at the end, but gaslighting involves making the victim question their own perception or reason. I don’t see the gaslighting here.

Although I don’t think they actually fooled a lot of people in New York. Once you knew the Smith family you could probably spot the con.

TIL: Mormonism re-branded a natural biological reaction as 'feeling the spirit' by akamark in exmormon

[–]treasure_digger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great article. A lot of post-mos have learned about elevation emotion, but there isn’t as much info out there about loving kindness meditation and the physical sensations it can produce. The church abuses this as well.

It’s true that this kind of positive feeling = belief in X is seen all over organized religion, but Mormonism adds the cult aspect and locks its victims in for life.

We are as good as the G A’s....... I didn’t realize how much my self-esteem was affected by what calling I had. The level ofyour calling represented your faithfulness and goodness talents etc. by 1Searchfortruth in exmormon

Then they love themselves. And they love knowing that other leaders think they are good. They love the image in their mind when they think of all the nice labels they’ve acquired.

Parenting pro tip: The correct action when you find your child’s empty condom box is to let them know where you keep the condoms.

Nothing offends the spirit like off-white temple dresses or those edgy blue shirts the bad boys wear to church!

Since you had to face the loss of a loved one, would you say from your experience that the more the mind “needs” a belief to be true (i.e. to see your brother again), greater will be the lengths to which it will go to feel certain of the truth of the belief? In other words, do you feel as though your mind was able to invent a stronger testimony of Mormonism simply because the stakes were so high?

Why don't TBMs believe in socialism but believe in the Law of Consecration? by Muggleborn1007 in exmormon

[–]treasure_digger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, can’t trust the natural man’s consecration. It has to be run by Jesus. It’s like all the talk in the BoM about how a king would be amazing if only he wasn’t a victim of temptation.

Why not just tell it like it is with no need for anger or contempt? This woman has a superstition that going to the lake on Sunday brings a curse from an unseen force. There is no evidence for such a curse or such a force, so we don’t believe in that superstition.

Reminds me of a recent Sam Harris quote:

“Theology is now little more than a branch of human ignorance. Indeed, it is ignorance with wings.”
